Abstract

Nagari Sungai Abang is one of the areas in Lubuk Alung District, one of the rice production centers in Padang Pariaman Regency. One farming group that intensively cultivates rice is the Farming Business group. The problem with the farmer groups is their ignorance of the benefits of straw as a source of organic matter in the soil. The composting process is long, so farmers always burn rice straw after harvest in preparation for planting the following season. If the burning of straw is carried out continuously, it is feared that nutrients will be deficient in the soil. This activity aims to empower Farming Business groups in Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung District, to utilize Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a bio activator in making straw compost as organic fertilizer and an alternative to addressing the problem of straw waste in Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung. This activity has been carried out in the Farming Group of Farmers in Sungai Abang Dalam Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung District, Padang Pariaman Regency. The method used is outreach, counseling, and training to demonstrate making PGPR suspension and compost from straw. From the activities that have been carried out, ready-to-use PGPR is obtained as a bio activator reproduced in coconut water media and used as a bio activator to speed up the composting process. The conclusion of this activity is increasing farmers' understanding of the benefits of straw as a raw material for compost and the use of PGPR as a bioactivator in making straw compost.

Abstract

Several varieties of rice are cultivated in West Sumatra including red rice (Oryza sativaL.) but drought is an obstacle to its cultivation. The purpose of this study was to observe the interaction of red rice with Polyethylene glycol, to determine which genotypes of red rice are ‘drought’ tolerant in the vegetative phase and to see the effect of Polyethylene glycol on the growth of red rice. This research was conducted in the Agronomy Laboratory and Greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University from October to November 2016. A Complete Random Factorial Design (10 x 2) with 3 replications was used. The first factor was the genotype of the local red rice (10 tested) and the second factor was either with or without Polyethylene glycol. Data were analyzed statistically with the F-test at the 5% level. Significant differences were further tested using Duncan's New Multiple Range Test at the 5% level. The variables observed were: plant height, the number of roots and the length of the longest root penetrating a vaseline/paraffin layer (wax layer method), plant fresh and dry weight and proline content. An interaction between red rice and Polyethylene glycol (20%) was observed. Only genotype 7 “Batu Kangkung” was tolerant to ‘drought’ in the vegetative phase and treatment with Polyethylene glycol affected plant height, length and number of roots penetrating the wax layer as well as the fresh weight of the plant.

Abstract

Indonesia has a fairly high genetic variation of local rice. Although biologically abundant, genetic resources continue to decrease due to a lack of attention and inadequate use of genetic resources. The introduction of early maturing superior varieties to rice production centres in various regions has resulted in genetic erosion of local varieties, so maintaining biodiversity to achieve national food security is an important thing to do. This study aimed to explore and identify local rice cultivars in Padang Pariaman District, West Sumatra. Exploration, characterization and collection assessment activities were conducted from February to November 2022. Data in the study were secondary data collected from relevant agencies, namely the Padang Pariaman District Agriculture and Food Security Service, the District Agricultural Extension Center, community leaders and farmers, while primary data collection used a survey method with random sample collection. Observations were made by directly identifying the characteristics of local rice plants in the field. The procedures followed were (1) identification of geospatial coordinate locations, (2) morphological characterization analysis of leaves, stems, grain and rice using the Bioversity International, IRRI, and WARDA 2007 guidebooks, and (3) statistical analysis of results. The characteristics considered include qualitative and quantitative characteristics processed using the Numerical Taxonomy System (NTSYS-pc) version 2.02 program. The exploration results obtained three (3) local rice genotypes of Padang Pariaman Regency, with 16 observed characters having similarity coefficients ranging from 0.21 (21%) to 0.31 (31%). Genotypes V1 and V2 owned the highest coefficient value at 0.31 (31%), and the lowest coefficient value was 0.21 (21%) for genotype V3. Similarity analysis of the three local rice genotypes in Padang Pariaman District showed the degree of dissimilarity between the genotypes. Keywords: Exploration, Morphological Characterization, Local Rice.

Abstract

As a genetic resource, local rice can provide insight into the inheritance of favorable traits. Local rice varieties have naturally been tested for resistance to pests and diseases, high yields, good rice quality (including class 1 quality), and a taste that people like, but also have some disadvantages, such as long life and high plant height that easily collapses. For this reason, the characteristics of local rice varieties that have these advantages are improved using the gamma-ray induced mutation technique. Before planting in the field, it is necessary to test the vigor and viability of local rice genotypes (Oryza sativa L.) Padang Pariaman seeds first. In this study, researchers used three different rice varieties, namely: "Madang Pulau", "Putiah Papanai", and "Banang Kuniang" and gamma irradiation, with radiation doses of 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 Gy. Based on the results of the study, the local rice seed varieties of Padang Pariaman Regency and the dose of gamma irradiation had a significant effect on maximum germination, while germination speed, germination capacity, vigor index, and growth uniformity were significantly affected by the dose of gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation with doses of 400-600 Gy resulted in a more significant decrease in seed vigor and viability compared to irradiation with doses of 100-300 Gy.

Abstract

The village of Sungai Nanam, Lembah Gumanti, is an area in Solok Regency, West Sumatra, that produces significant organic waste from horticultural agriculture. If not managed properly, this waste can cause environmental and aesthetic issues. However, this waste can be converted into an eco-enzyme. An eco-enzyme is a liquid enzyme produced by fermenting organic waste. Eco-enzyme has many benefits, including being used as a liquid organic fertilizer, cleaner, and pest repellent. This community service aims to educate and train the community, especially the women farmers group, named Kelompok Wanita Tani (KWT) Rimbo Data Sejahtera, on converting organic waste into eco-enzymes. The program used three methods: socialization, demonstration, and mentoring. It has been proven to be an effective way to educate and train the community, particularly KWT Rimbo Data Sejahtera, on proper waste management. This program is a perfect fit for their needs and is very useful in reducing the impact of pollution.

Abstract

The conversion of fertile land into industrial areas and construction development has contributed to the decline of rice production in Indonesia. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the rice fields to the sub-optimal land, i.e. lands with high levels of Fe and Al and low soil pH. One of the solutions that can potentially solve the problem is choosing varieties of rice that can adapt to the suboptimal land environment; the rice varieties can be obtained by estimating rice genetic parameters and selecting the optimal planting methods. One method that can potentially improve rice yield is “System of Rice Intensification”, or SRI method. Our study was conducted in the rice fields on suboptimal land at Pasar Ambacang, Kuranji District, Padang, Sumatra, from December 2019 to April 2020. The aims of the experiment are to determine the genetic parameters and responses of the three rice varieties to suboptimal land using the SRI method. A complete randomized design with four replications was used to set up the experiment using three varieties of rice, i.e. “Batang Piaman”, “Bujang Marantau”, and “IPB3S”. Based on the plant growth measurement and analysis of the genetic parameters, we found that the plant growth characters, particularly height and panicles length, had high heritability and genetic progression values.
