Abstract

The novel ‘Your Name’ by Makoto Shinkai is a popular Japanese romance story that revolves around the body swap phenomenon between two high school students, Taki and Mitsuha, who live in different places and have different backgrounds. The novel explores the psychological aspects of their relationship, such as their identity, personality, emotions, and communication, as well as the external factors that affect their romance, such as their culture, environment, and destiny. This research paper aims to analyze the romantic conflicts that arise from the psychological and external factors in the novel, and to examine their relevance in the lives of contemporary college students who may face similar challenges in their romantic relationships. The research method used is a qualitative approach, using Freud’s theory of personality The data sources are the novel itself and some related literature. The data analysis is done by identifying, categorizing, and interpreting the data based on the research questions and the theoretical framework. The results of the analysis show that the romantic conflicts in the novel are caused by the following factors: the id-ego-superego dynamics, the identity crisis, and the communication barriers. The research also finds that these factors are relevant in the lives of contemporary college students, who may experience similar conflicts in their romantic relationships due to the influence of globalization, technology, social media, and individualism. The research concludes that the novel ‘Your Name’ provides a realistic and relatable portrayal of the romantic conflicts that may occur in modern society, and that the novel can be used as a source of inspiration and guidance for college students who want to overcome their romantic problems and achieve a harmonious and fulfilling relationship.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the practice of an English placement test at one of the English education programs during three different testing periods (before the COVID-19 pandemic, during the pandemic, and after the pandemic). Further, the study sought to investigate the views of the test administrators, mainly focusing on the challenges they faced administering the test during the period mentioned. Using a qualitative case study approach, the researchers gathered the data from the results of observations and final reflections of the test administrators. The findings revealed that the placement test in three different periods applied similar three consecutive stages: the pre-testing stage, the testing day, and the post-testing stage. The goal of the test is also similar to that it is used to gauge the newly intake students entering TBIP. Rather than grouping students for specific classes, the placement test was conducted as a part of need analysis strategies to understand students’ English proficiency levels. While the placement tests before and after the pandemic have similarities, especially in preparation activities, the test format, and the test delivery, the placement test during COVID-19 differs. Despite those issues, the placement test administrators believed the test brought additional benefits. In addition to gauging the newly intake students’ English proficiency, the placement test was a way to start building positive relationships with students before meeting in an actual class. Hence, the test administrators have mixed feelings upon administering the placement test. Some final thoughts conclude the papers.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the type and the factors of interference that occur in EFL students' writing. This research used a qualitative method with a case study research design in this study. The subjects of this study consisted of one writing skills teacher and 6 grade 3 students from the Aphrodite English Club. In collecting data, there are three research instruments used, i.e., observation, documentation analysis, and interviews. Then, the data will be analysed using three ways of data reduction, presenting the data in tabular and transcript form and the last step is making conclusions. The results showed that the type of interference often occurs in EFL students is interlingual interference; students make many grammars error that occurs because of the influence of the structure of the first language on the target language. In intralingual interference, students made many mistakes in incomplete language structures, including the absence of appropriate sentence prepositions. Two factors are behind interference, i.e., the internalisation of culture and the student's lack of motivation to study writing in English.

Abstract

This study examines the psychological well-being of Indonesian pre-service English teachers, considering non-native speakers during their teaching practice. Well-being is defined from eudaimonic and hedonic perspectives, emphasizing self-actualization, positive relationships, emotions, satisfaction, and happiness. Pre-service teachers face challenges in managing emotions, establishing student relationships, and language anxiety. Forty-eight Indonesian pre-service English teachers completed questionnaires, and 10 underwent in-depth semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed a high level of psychological well-being among the pre-service teachers, with positive scores in autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, self-acceptance, purpose in life, and positive relations. However, language anxiety impacted their confidence in English communication compared to native speakers. Significant transitions, professional domains, emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, and language anxiety were identified as factors influencing their well-being. Preparing pre-service teachers mentally, emotionally, and intellectually to handle teaching demands is crucial. Improving psychological well-being can enhance teaching performance and student outcomes. While specific to Indonesia, this study calls for further research in diverse educational settings to inform strategies for supporting pre-service teacher well-being.

Abstract

This study investigates the pronunciation challenges of English consonants among English Education (EE) and English Literature (EL) students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected from ten students (five from each program) through pronunciation tests and audio recordings. The analysis focused on common errors in consonant sounds such as /θ/, /ð/, /ʒ/, and /ʃ/. Results reveal that EE students struggle primarily with interdental fricatives (/θ/ and /ð/), often substituting them with /t/ and /d/. Meanwhile, EL students face greater challenges with voiced fricatives (/ʒ/ and /z/), substituting them with /s/ or /ʃ/. Both groups showed shared difficulties with palatal fricatives, indicating gaps in phonetic proficiency. These findings highlight the influence of curriculum focus, with EE students benefiting more from phonetics training, whereas EL students emphasize textual analysis. The study underscores the importance of targeted pronunciation interventions to address department-specific needs and improve linguistic proficiency among learners.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of the appearance-based approach in enhancing students' short story writing skills at MA Model Zainul Hasan. The research highlights challenges such as low literacy rates and limited English vocabulary, particularly in Islamic boarding schools, which hinder students’ writing development. The study aims to address these issues by integrating innovative methods to improve literacy and writing skills. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through classroom observations and interviews. The findings reveal that the appearance-based approach significantly enhances students' ability to organize and express ideas creatively. It also boosts their confidence in public speaking through storytelling exercises. Furthermore, the method fosters collaboration among students and supports the development of critical thinking and creativity. The study concludes that short story writing, supported by appearance-based techniques, is an effective strategy for overcoming language barriers and improving literacy. The implications suggest that educators should adopt similar innovative approaches to nurture students' motivation, creativity, and engagement in writing activities. This research contributes to the development of practical teaching strategies in contexts with limited exposure to English.
