Abstract

The study "Implementing Various Strategies in Teaching English through Literature in Islamic Boarding School" explores the challenges of teaching English to Indonesian students, particularly those in rural areas, and the importance of finding successful techniques to improve their language proficiency. The research focuses on the English literature classroom at Amanatul Ummah Islamic Boarding School in Pacet-Mojokerto, Indonesia, and the strategies employed in teaching English through literature. The qualitative research methodology used in the study involves in-depth interviews with an English teacher at the school and the analysis of teaching strategies, student engagement, and motivation. The results highlight the school's commitment to structured and systematic learning approaches, including the use of the Wahdah technique for Quran memorization. The study also discusses the school's unique approach to teaching English through literature, which includes exposing students to a variety of literary texts, using pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading activities, and integrating literature classes with other subjects such as history, social studies, and Islamic studies. The discussion analyzes the current teaching strategies, their effectiveness, and the potential of the new methods suggested, comparing them with the strategies proposed by experts in the field of English language education. The study aims to offer insightful information to educators and policymakers at Islamic boarding schools and to influence future research and policy development in the field of English language instruction

Abstract

This article presents a psychological analysis of Jadis, the White Witch, a character in the novel "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis. This research uses a qualitative approach, focusing on in-depth analysis methods regarding Jadis' characteristics and traits. By applying psychological theory, especially Freud's "Id" theory, this analysis highlights the motivations, emotions, and feelings that underlie Jadis's journey in the novel. The research findings highlight the complex psychological characteristics of these characters, including reluctance, anxiety, and social interactions with other characters. The goal is to provide a comprehensive picture of Jadis and encourage further research into her character and critical psychological analysis

Abstract

This study investigated four moderate indicators coined by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (M0RA) among Muslim students. This study is essential because the MoRA has claimed moderation in its institution, but it has been questioned whether Muslim students studying at Islamic universities have implemented the practice. This article is the result of research with a qualitative approach conducted by conducting interviews with 36 students studying at three Islamic universities in Malang using purposive sampling. It has two focuses: 1) students' religious understanding and practice related to the four moderate indicators of the MoRA; and 2) the cause of the articulation of moderation, which leads to the implication of how to build moderate thoughts in students. The result of the study shows that there are differences in religious understanding and practice regarding the four moderate indicators of the MoRA. Indicators that have problems are tolerance and anti-violence in the intra-religious area, especially among minority sects. Meanwhile, two other indicators, namely national commitment and accommodativeness to local culture, appear to be in a safe area. The study also finds that "problematic" students were from social-humanities and religious study programs. Second, there are many reasons for the emergence of moderation among students, ranging from family background to the organization they are involved in. Thus, the authors present internalization and normalization as means of building moderate thoughts and attitudes in students.

Abstract

The issue of feminism has been a topic of discussion for many years, transforming several fields, including literature. As feminist issues have emerged, many literary works have begun to portray feminist characteristics. One of them is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Scandal in Bohemia, which has the feminist character of Irene Adler. Irene Adler is an interesting central character in this classic Sherlock Holmes story. Sherlock Holmes. Known for her intelligence and independence, Adler is feminist in the detective narrative. Irene Adler's character challenges existing ideas about women in literature at the time. The author used a qualitative method with a feminist literary criticism approach based on the theory of modern feminism, which states that everyone has the right to determine their own path of life, regardless of the influence of their environment. After analyzing the story of A Scandal in Bohemia, the author found seven characters of Irene Adler that represent feminist characters, such as strong-willed, assertive, independent, freedom of expression, self-confidence, strategic intelligence, and the ability to challenge and change stereotypes and male views of women. The implication of this research is that readers can gain a better understanding of how feminist characters contribute to the development of plots and themes in certain literary works or media.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate how effectively poetry works as an alternative teaching strategy for literature to English as a foreign language (EFL) Students. Poetry is a form of verbal art that evokes feelings, reflects thoughts, and conveys human experiences in a beautiful and creative way. This study explores the connection between teaching methods and literary works, with a specific focus on the use of poetry by teachers to improve language proficiency in EFL students. The study emphasizes a teacher's insights as a useful resource within the framework of an English course in Pare Kediri, East Java. The instructor highlights how well poetry works as an alternative teaching strategy for enhancing students' basic language proficiency, which includes speaking, listening, writing, and reading. The study also looks at the many advantages of including poetry in teaching languages. Using poetry as an alternative method to teach literature develops their critical thinking skills and language fluency in addition to their language ability. Moreover, it fosters a greater awareness and respect of one's cultural history and raises learning motivation. The research highlights the educational advantages of adding poetry into the curriculum and highlights the possibility of poetry as an alternative teaching method for EFL students. It is a promising option for instructors looking for cutting-edge and effective teaching methods because of its effectiveness. In the end, this study's conclusions support the inclusion of poetry in the curriculum as an alternative method to improve EFL students' language learning opportunities.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the practice of an English placement test at one of the English education programs during three different testing periods (before the COVID-19 pandemic, during the pandemic, and after the pandemic). Further, the study sought to investigate the views of the test administrators, mainly focusing on the challenges they faced administering the test during the period mentioned. Using a qualitative case study approach, the researchers gathered the data from the results of observations and final reflections of the test administrators. The findings revealed that the placement test in three different periods applied similar three consecutive stages: the pre-testing stage, the testing day, and the post-testing stage. The goal of the test is also similar to that it is used to gauge the newly intake students entering TBIP. Rather than grouping students for specific classes, the placement test was conducted as a part of need analysis strategies to understand students’ English proficiency levels. While the placement tests before and after the pandemic have similarities, especially in preparation activities, the test format, and the test delivery, the placement test during COVID-19 differs. Despite those issues, the placement test administrators believed the test brought additional benefits. In addition to gauging the newly intake students’ English proficiency, the placement test was a way to start building positive relationships with students before meeting in an actual class. Hence, the test administrators have mixed feelings upon administering the placement test. Some final thoughts conclude the papers.

Abstract

This article analyzes how drama can affect learning English and make it more interesting to learn.It is useful to ensure that drama as a medium to improve literary knowledge is well implemented.Drama can be used as an application of lessons in the classroom. This study was conducted at theGlobal English Course in East Java. The research methods used in this article are qualitative methodsthrough observation and interviews. An interview with one tutor was carried out as the foundationfor the analysis. The intention of studying drama is to discover how it is used for gaining literatureknowledge. The research results of the study found that drama can improve students’ pronunciation,and speaking skills and enhance confidence. Abstract

This study examines the primary conflicts within the novel Great Expectations, each paragraph focusing on a distinct conflict present in the narrative. The analysis applies Lewis A. Coser’s theory of social conflict (2002), which categorizes conflicts into three types: conflicts concerning social statuses, conflicts of interest, and conflicts of role. The objective of this research is to identify these social conflicts within the novel and explore their impact on readers. The study identifies a total of 13 instances of social conflict: 7 related to conflicts concerning social statuses, 3 involving conflicts of interest, and 3 concerning conflicts of role. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes textual data to uncover these conflicts, which are integral to the story of the main character. The novel adopts a mode that combines personal narrative with written and spoken dialogue. The influence of these social conflicts on readers is significant, as they resonate with real-life situations, helping readers to understand and navigate various types of conflicts encountered in everyday life.Keyword: literature, conflict, character

Abstract

This study explores the efficacy of using narrative texts to enhance students' speaking and listening skills in English Language Teaching (ELT). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research involved interviews with English teachers and two junior high school students, investigating the integration of narrative texts in ELT for bolstering listening and speaking proficiencies. The primary objective was to identify obstacles encountered by educators and students when employing narrative texts as a tool to cultivate speaking and listening skills. Findings indicate that integrating narrative texts presents a promising pedagogical approach, fostering collaborative learning, critical thinking, and enhanced linguistic abilities. Despite challenges, such as instructional refinement and overcoming learning obstacles, this research underscores the immense potential of narrative texts in advancing students' language proficiency. Sustained efforts in tailoring instructional strategies and providing support are crucial to maximizing the benefits of utilizing narrative texts in ELT, paving the way for improved language acquisition.

Abstract

This case study research explores the integration of religious moderation within setting of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms, specifically in an Islamic Junior High School. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the religious moderation integration into the educational process and to capture the perspectives of both teachers and students. The study employed qualitative approach particularly case study research design which was conducted within one of Islamic junior high school in East Java. Ten students and four English teachers were selected using purposive sampling to participate in the study. Data was collected through interviews, documentation, and observation. The results indicate that religious moderation has been effectively integrated into the teaching and learning process, including lesson planning and thematic material, by the teachers. Tolerance, anti-violence, accommodating to tradition/culture, cultural sensitivity, and open mindedness were the aspect of religious moderation found in EFL classroom.The perception of the teachers on the integration of religious moderation in EFL classrooms are linked to their roles as educators, the act of students, and the diverse backgrounds of the students. Students have reported that the integration of religious moderation has allowed them to gain insights into both appropriate and inappropriate aspects of another culture as they learnt English.
