Abstract

The integration of Online Machine Translation (OMT) into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms has ignited discussions about its practical use and ethical implications, particularly in Islamic universities where academic integrity is a core value. This study investigates the role of OMT in language instruction, explores Indonesian EFL learners’ perspectives on its use, and identifies strategies to address the challenges it presents. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with three students and two lecturers selected via purposive sampling, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the findings. Results reveal that OMT enhances students’ vocabulary, serves as a writing aid, and supports speaking practice in the language classroom. It offers benefits such as time efficiency, valuable features, and user convenience. However, challenges including inaccuracies, mistranslations, over-reliance, and excessive dependency were also evident. Both students and lecturers proposed strategies to mitigate these issues, such as fostering awareness of academic integrity among Islamic university students and restricting OMT use in classroom settings.

Abstract

This study examines how phonological transfer from different regional accents affects the articulation of fricative consonants /f/, /v/, /θ/, and /ð/, leading to systematic pronunciation variations. Unlike previous research that broadly investigates Indonesian-English phonological differences, this study highlights how regional accents further shape L2 pronunciation patterns. Using qualitative research, data were collected through spoken language analysis and in-depth interviews with eight UIN Malang students from Pontianak, Sidoarjo, Indramayu, Bekasi, and Palangkaraya. Findings reveal that students from Malay-influenced regions (Pontianak and Palangkaraya) struggle more with fricative articulation than those from areas where the accent aligns more closely with Standard Indonesian (Sidoarjo, Indramayu, Bekasi). The most common errors include substituting /f/ with /p/ and /v/ with /b/, as well as replacing interdental fricatives with /s/, /t/, /d/, or /z/. These patterns result from phonological transfer, where L1 phonetic constraints shape L2 pronunciation, alongside the influence of exposure to diverse linguistic environments. These findings suggest that regional accents are not just linguistic variables but are also shaped by social and historical factors affecting foreign language acquisition. They underscore the need for pronunciation instruction that addresses accent-specific challenges rather than applying uniform teaching strategies. Language education policies should recognize regional phonetic diversity as a natural aspect of second language learning and develop more targeted pedagogical approaches to enhance pronunciation accuracy.

Abstract

Live Worksheets, a technology-based tool that helps educators in assessing student performance, is one of the tools that facilitate teachers in designing electronic worksheets or known as E-LKPD. Live Worksheets allows teachers to easily create and manage electronic worksheets (E-LKPD) that are more interactive and dynamic compared to conventional E-LKPD which are usually printed and less flexible in terms of interactivity and content updates. In addition, the objectives of this study are to discover (1) the implementation of using Live Worksheets, (2) the perceptions of the teacher and students of Live Worksheets as assessment tool, and (3) the difficulties experienced by teacher when using Live Worksheets as an assessment tool. The method used is descriptive quantitative method by conducting observations, distributing questionnaires, and conducting semi-structured interviews. The participants in this study were one teacher and class XI IPS III which totaled 34 students. The results of this study showed that the implementation of Live Worksheets by teacher is done by distributing the available worksheets to students. The teacher's perspective on Live Worksheets is very positive because this tool is considered easy to use, effective, has good question quality, offers flexibility, facilitates grade management, is efficient, and provides good feedback. The majority of students also had a positive view of the tool. The perceptions are divided into three categories, familiarity and ease of use, learning experience and motivation, also effectiveness and skill improvement. The challenges are academic dishonesty, managing the behavior of very active students, and also designing her own worksheets. It is suggested that teachers utilize Live Worksheets’ features to create tailored materials, and students engage with integrity to optimize learning.

Abstract

The difficulties that students in the English Education Department encounter when attempting to accurately pronounce words using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) are examined in this study. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with students who were familiar with IPA. Significant challenges are shown by the data, such as trouble connecting symbols to sounds, a lack of practice opportunities, and a lack of instructional tools. Students recognize the value of IPA in enhancing pronunciation in spite of these obstacles, and they indicate a great desire for a more comprehensive and engaging education. To improve IPA education, suggestions include using audio-visual aids, doing more practice sessions, and utilizing collaborative learning techniques. These results offer insightful information for enhancing phonetics instruction and helping students gain self-assurance and pronunciation skills. What makes this study important is its focus on the practical challenges faced by students in mastering IPA, an area that is critical for language educators yet often overlooked in curriculum design. By identifying specific barriers and proposing targeted solutions, this research provides a unique contribution to phonetics instruction. Furthermore, it emphasizes the role of innovative teaching methods in building students' confidence and pronunciation skills, offering a foundation for future studies aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practical application in English education.
