Abstract

Reading is one of the main skills that must be possessed by students in order to be successful in learning English as a foreign language. Meanwhile, motivation is very much needed in English learning because motivation is one of the determinant factors of student to succeed. The relationship of reading and motivation is two coin-sides that encourage anyone to read or not to read. The aim of making this study is to determine the relationship between students' reading motivation and reading comprehension. This study takes the setting of students who learn English as a foreign language at a state university in Palangka Raya--Indonesia during one month and half by selecting 36 college students with an age range between 19-21 years covered by 22 females and 14 males. This study used a correlational research design. The result shows that there is a positive correlation between students’ reading motivation and their reading comprehension which means the more motivated students in reading the more increased their comprehension in reading the texts.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the function of the language politeness of the teacher in implanting character values to students in the primary school. The research was carried out at the primary school of SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut, Kota Palangka Raya. A qualitative method was used in this research with a pragmatics research design. The pragmatics design used to analyze the data was based on the principle of politeness which included six maxims and five components of speech situation. The data were obtained from conversational discourse between teachers and students containing language politeness in teaching and learning activities at the school. Then the data were also supported by doing interviews with involved teachers and by reviewing assessment report documents of students to relate the function of the teacher's language politeness with student character values of being attained. The data obtained using the triangulation technique were analyzed and presented by the qualitative descriptive technique. The results showed that there were 150 items of teacher language politeness which provided very good functions in implanting character values to students as an effort to build character for primary school students

Abstract

The development of online-based English learning design has now become a demand for teachers in line with the increasing development of information and communication technology. Junior high school students who are millennial young generation are inevitable from their needs in requiring gadgets as smart communication tools. This phenomenon must be exploited by teachers of 21st century as a moment of educating students through elearning by facilitating them to understand online-based learning materials. On this basis, online learning design is very important and must be mastered by professional teachers in this digital era, so that the learning process of students is not restricted to be implemented. This article is a non-research type, namely a report of training on developing elearning-based English learning design that took the subject of seven English teachers in the secondary school of SMP Negeri-3 Palangka Raya. The results achieved were increased knowledge, attitudes, motivation and abilities of teachers in developing and implementing online English learning design so that teachers had competitiveness and competence in the application of science and technology in the community, especially in developing learning designs on elearning-based materials.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the constructivism approach in training to the implementation of the language learning strategy for teachers of Dayak Ngaju language at SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut and SDN-5 Panarung, Kota Palangkaraya. Six teachers from SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut and SDN-5 Panarung were selected as the sample by using purposive sampling technique from the total population. This study used a quantitative method with an experimental design model of one group pretest-posttest design. From the result of the data analysis using the Wilcoxon statistical test, it can be concluded that the constructivism approach is effectively used in training the teachers by the implementation of the language learning strategy in teaching Dayak Ngaju language subject in both primary schools. This is depicted by the teachers’ attainment on the pretest score was 62.5 and the attainment in the posttest reached 81.6 where the significance test result in the statistical analysis shows the Sig.value of p < 0.05 so that Ho is rejected.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat Program Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (PKM-PPM) ini bertujuan untuk memberi pelatihan dan pendampingan penyusunan perangkat penilaian pembelajaran bagi Guru Bahasa Inggris SMP di Kota Palangka Raya. Kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan pendekatan direct instruction pada bulan Agustus 2022 dengan melibatkan tujuh orang Guru Bahasa Inggris SMP di Kota Palangka Raya.  Pada tahap pelatihan para guru dibekali pendalaman materi tentang konsep dasar penyusunan perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan cara mengembangkan desainnya. Untuk tahap pendampingan, para guru dibimbing mengembangkan desain perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan mengimplementasikannya pada masing-masing kelas yang diampu. Hasil dari kegiatan pelatihan yang dilakukan diperoleh peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru menyusun dan mengembangkan perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dari perolehan nilai rata-rata 41,329  sebelum diberi pelatihan dan menjadi nilai rata-rata 89,800 setelah diberi pelatihan. Seturut hal itu dapat disimpulkan, kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan ini berdampak positif terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru-guru SMP di Kota Palangka Raya dalam menyusun perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dengan sangat baik.The Community Service Activity of the Community Empowerment Program (PKM-PPM) aims at providing training and assistance in the preparation of learning assessment tools for secondary school English teachers in Palangka Raya. The training activity was carried out using a direct instruction approach in August 2022 by involving seven English teachers in Palangka Raya secondary school. At the training stage, the teachers were provided with in-depth material on preparing an English learning assessment tool and how to develop its assessment design. For the mentoring stage, the teachers were guided to develop the learning assessment tool design and implement it on lesson topics taught. The results of the training activities show the improvement of the knowledge and skill of teachers in arranging and developing English learning assessment tool. This is proved by the average score achieved (41.329) before being given the training and 89.800 after the training given. Therefore, it can be concluded that this training and mentoring activity positively impacts the knowledge and skill of secondary school teachers in preparing English learning assessment tools.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this technological era, teachers are required to be ready to face the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly complex life in the 21st century and universities as teacher-producing institutions have a moral obligation to provide guidance to teachers so that they are ready to face the challenges that exist in the field of education. The purpose of this Community Service activity is to provide training to SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya teachers on how to develop TPACK-based lesson plans in the context of HOTS. This training needs to be carried out because of the problems experienced by the teachers, including the lack of understanding of TPACK, HOTS, and how to design TPACK-based lesson plans in the context of HOTS. This service activity includes training and practice. The data collection method used is documentation technique by collecting all data and analyzing related documents. The results of the analysis of lesson plans designed by teachers in groups after attending the training show that teachers have been able to integrate TPACK into the lesson plans and implement HOTS (C4, C5, and C6) into the components of the lesson plans. Keywords: Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) ABSTRAKPada era teknologi ini, guru dituntut untuk siap menghadapi tantangan dan peluang kehidupan yang semakin kompleks di abad 21 dan Perguruan Tinggi sebagai lembaga penghasil guru memiliki kewajiban moril untuk melakukan pembinaan kepada para guru agar dapat siap menghadapi tantangan yang ada dalam bidang pendidikan. Tujuan kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini adalah memberikan pelatihan kepada para guru SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya tentang cara menyusun RPP berbasis TPACK dalam konteks HOTS. Pelatihan ini perlu dilakukan karena adanya permasalahan yang dialami guru-guru, antara lain kurangnya pemahaman tentang TPACK, HOTS, dan cara merancang RPP berbasis TPACK dalam konteks HOTS. Kegiatan pengabdian ini meliputi pelatihan dan praktik. Metode pengambilan data yang digunakan adalah teknik dokumentasi dengan cara menghimpun seluruh data dan menganalisis dokumen terkait. Hasil analisis RPP yang dirancang guru secara berkelompok setelah mengikuti pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa guru-guru telah mampu mengintegrasikan TPACK ke dalam RPP serta mengimplementasikan HOTS (C4, C5, dan C6) ke dalam komponen-komponen RPP. Kata Kunci: Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills)

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe Lecturer Program for Assisting Excellent Human Resources (PDPSU) is one of the schemes in the community service activities at the university which was carried out by the FKIP Lecturer Team from the University of Palangka Raya (UPR). The PDPSU program was implemented to six teachers of Dayak Ngaju Language (BDN) Subject at SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut and SDN-5 Panarung Palangkaraya city through training and assistance in implementing the strategy of language learning. The purpose of this PDPSU activity was to help fulfill the pedagogic competence of the BDN subject teachers in applying the theory of language learning strategy including techniques for using BDN learner dictionary and developing teaching materials, grammar translation teaching method, communicative approach, and language learning techniques in learning BDN at the elementary schools. The results of the program can improve teachers’ competence in mastering the basic concepts and theories of language learning strategy and apply them to develop the learners’ worksheet of BDN in the elementary schools and implementing them in learning activities within their respective classes. It showed by the observation grade attained by the teachers during training and mentoring reached an average of 81.6. Keywords: language learning strategy, Dayak Ngaju language, primary school ABSTRAKProgram Dosen Pendamping SDM Unggul (PDPSU) merupakan salah satu skim dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat di perguruan tinggi, yang dilaksanakan oleh Tim Dosen FKIP dari Universitas Palangka Raya (UPR). Program PDPSU ini dilaksanakan kepada enam orang Guru Mata Pelajaran Bahasa Dayak Ngaju (Guru Mapel BDN) di SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut dan SDN-5 Panarung Kota Palangkaraya melalui pelatihan dan pendampingan implementasi strategi pembelajaran bahasa. Tujuan kegiatan PDPSU ini untuk membantu memenuhi kompetensi pedagogik para guru mapel BDN tersebut dalam mengaplikasikan teori strategi pembelajaran bahasa yang mencakup teknik penggunaan kamus pelajar BDN dan pengembagan materi ajar, metode pengajaran terjemahan tata bahasa, pendekatan komunikatif, dan teknik pembelajaran bahasa dalam pembelajaran BDN pada sekolah dasar. Hasil kegiatan pada program PDPSU ini dapat meningkatkan kompetensi guru dalam menguasai konsep dasar dan teori strategi pembelajaran bahasa dan mengaplikasikannya dalam bentuk pengembangan LKPD pembelajaran BDN di sekolah dasar serta mengimplementasikannya pada kegiatan pembelajaran BDN di kelasnya masing-masing. Abstract

The Community Stimulus Partnership Program which is so-called PKMS is one of scheme of community service activity in the university carried out by the lecturer team from FKIP of the University of Palangka Raya. This PKMS program was implemented to ten classroom teachers at SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut, Kota Palangka Raya by the aim of assisting the teachers to fulfill the pedagogical competence in making improvement to their learning problems in the classroom through the reflective action which was arranged into a classroom action research (CAR). The lecturer team carried out a training and mentoring activity of writing scientific papers of CAR-based for classroom teachers at the SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut. The implementation of training method was conducted through developing of training materials, mentoring and assisting activities during the application of the classroom action. The result of the program can increase teachers’ knowledge about the basic concepts of writing scientific papers of CAR-based and increase teachers’ competence in taking reflective action to improve the quality of teaching in the subject of Indonesian Language. It is indicated by the evaluation result in observation regarding with teachers’ activities and performance during training and mentoring which reached a score 84.3 in average.Program Kemitraan Masyarakat Stimulus (PKMS) merupakan salah satu skim dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat di perguruan tinggi, yang dilaksanakan oleh Tim Dosen FKIP dari Universitas Palangka Raya (UPR). Program PKMS dilaksanakan kepada sepuluh orang Guru Kelas di SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut Kota Palangkaraya dengan tujuan untuk membantu memenuhi kompetensi pedagogik Guru Kelas dalam melakukan perbaikan pada permasalahan pembelajaran di kelasnya melalui tindakan reflektif yang disusun ke dalam sebuah penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Tim Dosen melaksanakan sebuah kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan penulisan karya ilmiah bentuk PTK kepada Guru Kelas di SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut. Penerapan metode pelatihan dilaksanakan melalui pendalaman materi dan kegiatan pendampingan saat implementasi tindakan kelas. Hasil kegiatan pada program PKMS ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan guru tentang konsep dasar penulisan karya ilmiah bentuk PTK serta meningkatkan kompetensi guru dalam melakukan tindakan reflektif untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran di kelas pada muatan pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Hal itu ditunjukkan dengan nilai pengamatan terhadap aktivitas dan kinerja guru saat pelatihan dan pendampingan, yakni rata-rata 84,3.

Abstract

Although children learn a language faster than adults, they do not learn through traditional language teaching methods. Children can learn languages better through more fun activities so that language learning activities look natural to them as if they are not aware that they are learning a language. To attract the attention of young learners in learning a language, songs and games can be used as an effective learning strategy to teach young learners to speak English. This study shows the benefits of fun learning strategies of English to the young learners. There were 30 pupils of third graders at Muhammadiyah Primary School (SD- Muhammadiyah) Palangka Raya and one teacher of English at the school were modeled to this experimental study. This study using one group pretest-posttest design examined the effectiveness of implementation of song and game-based learning strategy of English vocabulary to Indonesian young learners. A comparison of learners’ proficiency in expressive and receptive vocabulary of English was made before and after the implementation of the learning strategy. Results indicated that the young learners’ proficiency in English vocabulary after implementing the strategy outperformed the learners’ proficiency before the strategy implemented.
