Abstract

This study investigates the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in enhancing vocabulary acquisition and receptive skills—specifically reading and listening—in English language learning. Focusing on three widely used platforms—Memrise, Cake, and Duolingo—a literature review of 21 peer-reviewed sources was conducted. Findings indicate that Memrise effectively supports vocabulary retention through spaced repetition and native speaker input, Cake addresses listening comprehension challenges via authentic, adaptive video materials, and Duolingo promotes vocabulary growth and reading fluency through gamified, personalized learning. Collectively, these AI tools foster learner autonomy, sustain motivation, and create flexible, engaging learning environments. The study underscores the importance of strategically integrating AI technologies into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction to address diverse learner needs and improve learning outcomes.

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of information and communication technology (ICT), mobile devices have become increasingly integrated into educational environments. This paper focuses on the use of WhatsApp, a popular messaging app, as a powerful tool for enhancing English language learning by efficiently managing student tasks. It presents an instructional model that incorporates four key English language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—through WhatsApp. This model allows both students and teachers to explore the practicalities, challenges, and achievements associated with using WhatsApp for academic tasks, both during and outside of school hours. The instructional model utilizes WhatsApp in both synchronous and asynchronous modes, offering flexibility in delivering content. Activities for each language skill leverage WhatsApp's capabilities, such as voice notes, text messaging, and multimedia sharing, to enhance the learning experience. This model fosters real-time communication and enables students to practice their language skills even in resource-limited environments. This instructional model implies that WhatsApp is a valuable tool for language teaching, especially for educators with low digital literacy. Its accessibility and flexibility allow for the continuation of education in difficult circumstances. Besides, the instructional model presented provides a framework that can be adapted by English teachers for various learning contexts, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.

Abstract

The local culture integration in foreign language (FL) reading classroom can help learners understanding text more easily and quickly. This research took 37 secondary school students in the junior level (11 males & 26 females) as the sample. The quantitative research method was used with a case-study research design. There were three research objectives focused in this study: (1) the influence of local culture-based pictorial narrative texts on students' reading comprehension; (2) the correlation between students' perceptions of integrating local culture into the development of reading materials and students' reading comprehension; and (3) the difference of problems faced by students in understanding pictorial narrative texts in terms of purpose of the story, characters in the story, orientation, complications, and resolution of the story. The results showed that local culture-based pictorial narratives had a significant effect on students' reading comprehension, and were positively correlated to each other. In addition, students do not have discrepancy in terms of problems encountered when understanding the narratives such as the purpose of the story, characters in the story, orientation, complication, and resolution of the story.

Abstract

Anxiety or nervousness is one of the affective factors that affects anyone learning and practicing English as a foreign language, especially when speaking the language. Anxiety in English speaking is commonly related to apprehension, fear, and worry that the learners experience when using the language. Most researchers in Indonesia studied speaking anxiety in terms of psychological and linguistic factors, but not specifically to relate with variables such as gender and number of years for learning the target language. This study is in addition to examining the speaking anxiety level of Indonesian learners of English, and the dominant factor triggering the anxiety, and also to attest the difference of anxiety levels related to gender and the number of years in learning English. By using a quantitative method of case study research design, this study revealed that female learners are more anxious than males in speaking English which mean gender is affected by foreign language anxiety. Besides, the number of years in learning English also influences learners controlling their anxiety during speaking which means the longer they learn English the less anxious they speak the language. Then, test anxiety most dominantly contributes to the uneasiness factor for students in speaking English. The result of this study implies that teachers or lecturers of English must provide a space for female students to feel more secure in speaking class by avoiding negative evaluation so that they feel comfortable while learning and acquiring the language.

Abstract

Abstract

Games are increasingly recognized as effective tools for supporting language learning, particularly in the development of speaking and pronunciation skills. While previous studies have highlighted the potential of digital games for language learning, fewer have examined informal online gaming experiences from learner narrative perspectives, especially in relation to speaking and pronunciation development. This study explores how a recent high school graduate improved his English proficiency through online gaming, aiming to understand how informal and extramural activities contribute to language development outside the classroom. Using a narrative inquiry approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, transcribed, and thematically analyzed to capture the participant personal experiences. The findings reveal that online gaming provided meaningful exposure to English and motivated the participant to communicate more actively with teammates. Through interactions on platforms such as Discord and PlayStation Party, the participant practiced pronunciation, expanded vocabulary, and received immediate feedback from other players. The collaborative and immersive nature of gaming created a low-anxiety environment that increased confidence and willingness to speak. These results demonstrate that language learning can occur beyond formal education and that extramural activities offer rich opportunities for authentic language use.
