Abstract

The use of code-switching in English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) classrooms has considerably occupied serious discussions. Most language researchers consider whether to use only the target language exclusively or to use it alongside the first language in foreign language classrooms. This paper reviews 15 empirical studies investigating code-switching in different EFL classroom settings and cultures regarding English as a second and foreign languages. There are three main things that this paper wants to seek for the answer from those studies viewed from teachers’ and students’ outlooks; those are the perception, the function, and the strategy to generate learning success from code-switching. The results show that code-switching provides the chance for the lower proficiency level of English learners to feel secure in expressing what they want to speak, but not for those who belong to high proficiency level ones. Besides, code-switching tends to function as classroom management, but the over-functioning of code-switching in the EFL classroom can only hinder learners from receiving comprehensible input of English. Of all, the most important highlight from this paper is that the more the mother tongue is used the worse the success of learning English.

Abstract

Abstract

The Lecturer Program for Assisting Excellent Human Resources (PDPSU) is one of the schemes in the community service activity (PKM)  at the university which was carried out by the FKIP Lecturer Team from the University of Palangka Raya (UPR). This PKM-PDPSU activity was conducted for ten elementary school teachers and five prospective elementary school teachers in Palangkaraya City through coaching clinic activities in the form of training and mentoring in workshops and intensive counseling services in virtual zoom cloud meetings. The aim of this PKM-PDPSU activity is to support the superior human resources of the prospective elementary school teachers in terms of skills in writing scientific papers in the form of PTK and compiling scientific publication articles. The coaching clinic method uses an integrated direct instruction-communication approach, which will be implemented from October 2023 to February 2024. The science and technology provided by the implementation of this PKM-PDPSU activity can improve the professional knowledge and skills of elementary school teachers and prospective teachers in the field of writing scientific papers in the form of PTK. This improvement is achieved through the ability to conduct classroom action research activities and prepare reports, as well as write scientific articles and publish them in scientific journals. This is also proven by the evaluation results of the activities and performance of the participants of the coaching clinic, namely an average of 85.3 with a completion percentage of 100%. This is the conclusion that the PKM-PDPSU activities conducted by the faculty team of FKIP Palangka Raya University in 2023/2024 have been well conducted.

Abstract

In the realm of English language learning, web-based learning (WBL) provides a critical tool for practicing speaking skills which requires synchronous interactions for effective learning. This study explores the efficacy of the "Harati Speaking" website, a web-based platform designed to enhance spoken English skills among Intermediate English learners. The research employs a quantitative descriptive method involving 64 second-year bachelor students from an Indonesian university's English Education Study Program. Data were gathered using the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), which evaluates six categories of user experience: attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. Results indicate a generally positive user experience, with specific strengths in the website's ability to provide an engaging and efficient learning environment. However, areas such as novelty and certain aspects of attractiveness and dependability received lower, though still satisfactory, ratings, suggesting room for design enhancements. Overall, the "Harati Speaking" website proves to be a valuable tool for practicing the speaking skill in English, contributing positively to the language learning process in a foreign language classroom. This study provides valuable insights into how such platforms can facilitate synchronous interactions essential for effective language learning. For future development of the "Harati Speaking" website, more innovative and engaging features could boost the web novelty, such as by including gamification elements and interactive scenarios. By addressing these areas, future research can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the potential and optimization of web-based learning tools for English learning.

Abstract

This study explored the adaptation of the ADDIE instructional model in designing and developing a website for the speaking practice of EFL students at the university level. The feasibility of the website was measured through the evaluation of independent experts from three aspects of rating: web design, instructional content, and language usage. Six lecturers and 64 EFL students were invited to evaluate the website. Two lecturers have expertise in multimedia and informatics, while the four others are two experts in instructional content of English teaching and two lecturers in English linguistic expertise. The assessments exposed that the web is easy to use by students and very practical in supporting students for learning; the content of learning material in the website has manifested the syllabus of English-speaking skill on the specified level; and the language used by the website is matched with the level of students’ language proficiency. Therefore, this study successfully developed a prototype of a web-based language learning product that helps students practice English speaking at the intermediate level.

Abstract

In teaching vocabulary, the Word Mapping technique is considered the one of appropriate and applicable techniques used by the teacher in the classroom, particularly in building up a large store of words in order to arrange a sentence. The objective of this study is to find out the significant effect of teaching vocabulary by using the word mapping technique. This study used a pre-experimental design where researchers only used one sample to be treated with the teaching using word mapping technique. The pretest and posttest were given before and after treatment made. The data were collected using tests where the scores of the tests were analyzed using paired-sample t-test computation. Then the result showed that teaching vocabulary using word mapping technique is effective to enhance students’ mastery of English vocabulary.
