Abstract

This study explored the adaptation of the ADDIE instructional model in designing and developing a website for the speaking practice of EFL students at the university level. The feasibility of the website was measured through the evaluation of independent experts from three aspects of rating: web design, instructional content, and language usage. Six lecturers and 64 EFL students were invited to evaluate the website. Two lecturers have expertise in multimedia and informatics, while the four others are two experts in instructional content of English teaching and two lecturers in English linguistic expertise. The assessments exposed that the web is easy to use by students and very practical in supporting students for learning; the content of learning material in the website has manifested the syllabus of English-speaking skill on the specified level; and the language used by the website is matched with the level of students’ language proficiency. Therefore, this study successfully developed a prototype of a web-based language learning product that helps students practice English speaking at the intermediate level.

Abstract

In teaching vocabulary, the Word Mapping technique is considered the one of appropriate and applicable techniques used by the teacher in the classroom, particularly in building up a large store of words in order to arrange a sentence. The objective of this study is to find out the significant effect of teaching vocabulary by using the word mapping technique. This study used a pre-experimental design where researchers only used one sample to be treated with the teaching using word mapping technique. The pretest and posttest were given before and after treatment made. The data were collected using tests where the scores of the tests were analyzed using paired-sample t-test computation. Then the result showed that teaching vocabulary using word mapping technique is effective to enhance students’ mastery of English vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the teacher's questioning strategy in English lessons. It was conducted in classroom interaction between teacher and students of SMP Negeri 1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan, in Central Kalimantan Province. The subject of this study was an English teacher and 25 eighth grade of junior high school students. This research used a qualitative approach. Two main data collection instruments were used observation and interview. Through observation, the researcher carefully analyzed the types of teachers questioning strategies during English learning activities. In interview, researcher gain deeper insights from the teacher related with the questioning strategies used by her during teaching. The result revealed that teachers used four questioning strategies in classroom interaction, namely redirection questions, prompting questions, probing questions, and granting waiting time. Then, the result showed the prompting question strategy was the most dominant question strategy, but the teacher was still ineffective in using this strategy because the questions asked still contained many grammatical errors because the teacher sometimes used a mixture of English and Indonesian which caused students only answer briefly. This study implies that the implementation of questioning strategies by the teacher actually has the potential to increase students' activeness in learning English.

Abstract

This study explores a product system for speech recognition, which is termed Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), developed through research and development (R&D) method by adapting the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). The product yielded through this research is an ASR system embedded into a website for the practice of speaking English as a foreign language (EFL) for students at the intermediate English level. Before the product was developed, researchers had conducted a need analysis to ensure that the product was needed as a learning support tool for English-speaking practice. After that, the feasibility of the product was measured through the evaluation of two independent experts from two fields of expertise: the expert of information and communication technology (ICT), and the expert of technology-enhanced language learning (TELL). Twenty-two EFL students were invited purposively to assess the ASR system during the trial to users. Results show that the ASR system proves to be a valuable educational tool, offering accessibility, usability, and interactive feedback that enhance user engagement and support language learning. However, this study has a significant problem, which is the inconsistency of speech recognition accuracy, particularly the speech from non-native speakers of English

Abstract

This study investigates the translation of wordplay and idioms in Chapter 1 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets into Indonesian, highlighting the linguistic and cultural challenges inherent in translating creative language. Utilizing Delabastita’s (1993) typology for wordplay and Baker’s (2017) strategies for idioms, the research employs a qualitative comparative method. Findings reveal that wordplay is predominantly paraphrased (66.7%), often resulting in diminished humor and stylistic nuance, while idioms are largely translated literally (55.6%), occasionally producing unnatural phrasing. Nonetheless, successful cultural substitutions—such as rendering “a load of rubbish” as “omong kosong besar”—demonstrate effective dynamic equivalence. The study underscores the tension between maintaining textual fidelity and achieving cultural accessibility, offering practical insights for translators working with fantasy literature and linguistically inventive texts.
