Abstract

This study aims to examine how hate speech is constructed and framed by netizens toward the 80th Indonesian Independence Day (HUT RI) logo on Instagram. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and Robert Entman’s framing analysis model which encompasses four key elements: defining problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and offering treatment recommendations this research explores the construction of digital public discourse through content observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the framing of hate speech manifests in two primary forms, namely symbolic and linguistic, expressed through humor, sarcasm, and parody visuals that highlight public resistance toward the government. The public frames the logo as a symbol of governmental failure to represent the spirit of independence, thus positioning hate speech as a form of social and political expression of collective disappointment. This phenomenon indicates that the digital sphere has evolved into an arena where the meaning of freedom of expression shifts from rational criticism toward emotional and resistant expression. The study underscores the importance of digital literacy and ethical public communication to ensure that freedom of expression on social media remains productive, balanced, and reinforces national values in the digital era

Abstract

This study explores the symbolic meanings embedded in the sacred Telek Jumpai Dance performed in Jumpai Village, Klungkung, Bali. The problem addressed in this research arises from the limited understanding of the symbolic functions of its movements and ritual properties, despite its long-standing role in maintaining spiritual balance within the community. The study aims to identify and interpret the symbolic meanings of the dance through the perspectives of local cultural actors. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with ten informants selected via purposive sampling, and documentation of ritual performances. The findings reveal that each component of the dance such as the white mask, fan, headdress, and core movements acts as a symbolic medium in the communication between the physical (sekala) and spiritual (niskala) realms. Movements like nyalud, nyeregseg ngemapat, aras-arasan, and ngotes represent purification, protection, balance, and spiritual alertness. The community perceives Telek Jumpai not merely as an artistic tradition but as a sacred cultural identity, functioning as a guardian symbol, a unifying force, and a transmitter of ancestral values to younger generations.

Abstract

This study examines the political communication strategies of the Jaya-Wibawa couple to form their leadership image through the @jayawibawadenpasar Instagram account in the 2024 Denpasar Regional Elections, based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) framework. The methodology used is qualitative descriptive, which is carried out by observing the content and responses from the comment column, completing digital documentation, literature studies, and conducting in-depth interviews with members of the Jaya-Wibawa couple's campaign team. The findings of this study indicate that this couple's communication approach is built on two main categories, namely incidental content and persuasive content, which complement each other to achieve engagement and appeal to young voters. The application of ELM theory can be seen in the merger of two persuasion paths. The central path emerges through data-driven content, explanations of programs, and policy arguments that encourage high elaboration, which is demonstrated by the audience's critical comments on the effectiveness of the program and the sustainability of public policy. Meanwhile, peripheral pathways are more visible through aesthetic visual elements, music, symbols of unity, and emotional touches that create a positive impression without deep analysis. The merger of these two channels of persuasion has succeeded in increasing the electability of candidate pairs. This study confirms that Instagram plays the role of an interactive and live-action political communication platform, which is able to strengthen the legitimacy of candidates and encourage the participation of young voters through a lightweight, visual, and accessible campaign approach.
