Abstract

ABSTRACT The well-being of tobacco farmers in Indonesia tends to be low due to several influencing factors, including low income, dependence on the cigarette industry, low educational levels, and limited access to technology and information. To enhance their welfare, there is a need to focus on increasing income, improving access to technology, information, and education. The rainy season poses challenges for tobacco farmers as it can cause damage to crops and affect the quality of tobacco. Farmers can explore alternative sources of income by beekeeping. Beekeeping provides additional income, environmental protection, and enhances the quality of agricultural products through pollination. Probolinggo Regency has significant potential for beekeeping due to the availability of food sources, favorable climate, diverse agricultural practices, and community interest. With this potential, farmers in Probolinggo Regency can earn additional income and maintain soil fertility. The key to the success of this program lies in community development approaches and community participation in decision-making. Training and mentoring in honey bee cultivation improve participants' knowledge and skills while ensuring sustainable implementation. Environmental protection programs involving planting flowering plants for honey bees offer dual benefits by providing food and conserving the environment. Introducing honey bee ecotourism is a way to combine sustainable cultivation with nature-based tourism, enhancing conservation awareness. Therefore, empowering communities through beekeeping has many benefits, including improving welfare, environmental protection, developing the honey industry, and increasing national revenue. Moreover, this initiative also opens opportunities for sustainable ecotourism, serving as a source of local revenue and strengthening the country's economy. Abstract

This paper attempts to investigate the price volatility of fruits with higher economic values, which are avocado, apple, guava, banana, and jackfruit, and analyzes the long-term and short-term period relationship between production and prices of these fruits. The data used are the quarterly productions and prices of avocado, apple, guava, banana, and jackfruit on the producer level for 2012 to 2020 obtained from Agriculture office of Batu Municipality. The volatility evaluation was using the ARCH/GARCH. The long-term relationship was analyzed using the Johansen cointegration test, and the short-term relationship used the Error Corection Mechanism (ECM). The results of the volatility analysis confirmed that every fruit studied had a low volatility rate. In addition, the productions and prices of the commodities studied had been cointegrated in the long-run; however only avocado, guava, and apple have a short-run relationship. The government is suggested to provide price and production information systems to ensure farmers' market access. Keywords: price volatility, fruits, ARCH/GARCH, cointegration, ECM

Abstract

The ease in obtaining a loan is often regarded as a key advantage of the sharecropping system in the traditional solar salt business of Pamekasan Regency. The challenges faced by tenant farmers in accessing formal financial institutions have led to the continued prevalence of the sharecropping system in rural areas. This research aims to find the relationship between the sharecropping system, informal credit, and salt land productivity. The first analysis employs a multiple linier regression model on 93 tenant farmers in Pamekasan Regency to analyze the factors that influenced the amount of informal credit. Next, a quantitative descriptive analysis was carried out regarding the relationship between the sharecropping system, the amount of informal credit, and the productivity of solar salt fields area. Findings indicate that the significant factors affecting the credit amounts requested by tenant farmers include the cost of funds, loan duration, profits garnered by tenant farmers, the availability of collaterals, and the presence of other credit sources. The second conclusion of this research findings is that the extent of solar salt land area has a positive correlation with the informal credit amount, as does the productivity of the land. It should be an expected necessity for the government to play a larger role in supplying formal credit to small-scale farmers. This includes measures like credit rationing to diminish the influence of landowners.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were: (1) Analyse the technical efficiency (TE) of smallholder sugarcane farming (TR); (2) Analyse the factors that affect TE; and (3) Analyse the profitability of farming using the Sistem Bagi Hasil (SBH) and Sistem Pembelian Tebu (SPT) partnership schemes. This study was conducted in the PG-PG Malang working area with 31 smallholder sugarcane farmers surveyed in the 2022-2023 planting season. The method of measuring technical efficiency uses DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis), tobit regression, and analysis of sugarcane farming in each partnership scheme (SBH and SPT). The results of the analysis showed that the average TE value of TR farming on land was 97% and still had the potential to be increased by 3%. Factors that influence the level of TE are educational variables, family dependents and the role of financial institutions. If the average productivity of TR is 1,308 tonnes/ha, yield 5.11%, sugar price Rp.13,200/kg and sugarcane price Rp.72,000/kg. Then the actual and target average income and RC ratio values obtained in the SBH partnership are respectively Rp.18.17 million/ha (1.26) and Rp.20.41 million/ha (1.30), while in the SPT partnership respectively Rp.18.27 million/ha (1.23) and Rp.20.50 million/ha (1.26). Based on the RC ratio value, the recommended partnership scheme is SBH. However, fluctuations in sugarcane prices need to be considered, for example at the end of the milling season the price can reach Rp.95,000-Rp.100,000 per quintal and it is ensured that the income earned in the SBH scheme is higher than the RC ratio.
