Abstract

This study describes the implementation of teachers’ elicitation in speaking class of English Department of Ar-raniry Islamic State University. It attempts to investigate types of elicitation used by the lecturers in speaking class and the most frequent type. The participants of this study were five lecturers of speaking classes and hence ten teaching sessions were video-recorded and transcribed in order to analyze lecturers’ utterance that indicates teachers’ elicitation. Quantitative and qualitative method were employed where the data were obtained from observation and interview by means of video recorder, field-notes, observation sheet and interview guide. Technique of data analysis was followed Miles’s & Huberman’s (1992) model including data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of this study revealed six types of elicitations; elicit:inform, elicit:confirm, elicit:agree, elicit:commit, elicit:repeat, and elicit:clarify were used by the lecturers in teaching speaking. It is also found elicit:inform was the most frequent type of elicitation used which reached 72.23%. This indicates that the lecturers frequently used elicitation to invite students to speak.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) mengetahui jenis tindak tutur lokusi yang terdapat dalam novel Kembara Rindu Karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy, (2) mengetahui jenis tindak tutur ilokusi yang terdapat dalam novel Kembara Rindu karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy, (3) mengetahui jenis tindak tutur perlokusi yang terdapat dalam novel Kembara Rindu karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian deskripstif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Data penelitian ini berupa tuturan antar tokoh dalam novel, dan sumber data yaitu novel Kembara Rindu Karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik dokumentasi dan teknik pencatatan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat  tiga bentuk tindak tutur lokusi dalam novel Kembara Rindu karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy. Tindak tutur tersebut adalah: (1) lokusi bentuk pernyataan, (2) lokusi bentuk pertanyaan, dan (3) lokusi bentuk perintah. Terdapat lima macam tindak tutur ilokusi dalam novel Kembara Rindu yaitu ilokusi asertif dengan maksud menyatakan, menyarankan, dan melaporkan, (2) ilokusi direktif dengan maksud  memerintah, memohon, memesan, (3) ilokusi ekspresif dengan maksud berterima kasih, memohon maaf, menyalahkan, memuji, (4) ilokusi komisif dengan maksud menjanjikan, menawarkan, (5) ilokusi deklarasi dengan maksud menjatuhkan hukuman. Dalam novel ini ditemukan tiga tindak tutur perlokusi yaitu (1) tindak tutur perlokusi verbal, (2) tindak tutur perlokusi nonverbal, dan (3) tindak tutur perlokusi verbal nonverbal.Kata Kunci: tindak tutur, lokusi, ilokusi, perlokusi, novel

Abstract

Motivation is an important factor for explaining the success or failure of any complex task. Motivation is related to gender which plays an important role in one’s life. This study focuses on finding out the correlation between gender and motivation among students in learning English as a foreign language. It looks particularly on determining how motivation in learning English as a foreign language is influenced by gender. The researchers employed qualitative research where the data were obtained by questionnaire. Ten participants of this research were chosen for this research. They are five males and five female postgraduate students of English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University. This research found that there is significant correlation between gender and motivation among EFL students in learning English in which female students tend to be more successful and motivated than the male students regarding learning English.

Abstract

Providing written corrective feedback is a necessity to help language learner improve accuracy. This research aims to seek out students’ response toward the use of Indirect Corrective Feedback to reduce error on students’ recount text. Tenth graders of SMAN 1 Meulaboh were the sample of this study and observed during the correction. Data from the close-ended questionnaire was analyzed qualitatively andwere calculated using percentage system. The result showed that most students agreed about the implementation of Indirect Corrective Feedback and they believe that this error correction strategy helps them to reduce errors in writing recount text. The result confirm that the students responded positively toward the use of Indirect Corrective Feedback.

Abstract

This study intends to explore students’ difficulties in using critical thinking skills in reading. The subject of this study was second year undergraduate students of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, Banda Aceh. This qualitative study analysed students’ difficulties in using critical thinking skills in term of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. A personal interview was conducted to find the data from the students. The result indicates that students’ lack of practicing let them difficult in using critical thinking skills in reading. The other difficulties found were lack of language mastery, implied meaning, background knowledge, repetition and lack of vocabulary. Among six problems discovered above, lack of practicing, background knowledge and language mastery had made the students felt that critical thinking was difficult to be applied.

Abstract

Metacognition has been popular in reading area, especially when it is related to comprehension and the representation of meanings. Combining metacognitive strategies to represent meanings from a text has been done by previous scholars to help readers construct meaning. In this paper, we present students’ drawings and writings as the results of successive visualisation and summarisation activities in the classroom. We intended to find out the extent to which students’ visual representations can be the guideline for them to write summaries. By employing qualitative research method, we collected visual representations and summaries from 26 undergraduate students studying at the English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University. To understand students’ drawings, we consulted some literature on visual literacy and multimodality; while for the analysis of students’ writings, we reviewed some literature on functional model to language. Based on the analysis, a productive visual representation leads to a strong summary, and vice versa. This result is further discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Intercultural communication is a fundamental key to build social harmony. This study aims to investigate students’ perceptions on promoting social harmony through intercultural communication practices in Indonesia as a multi ethnic and multi culture country. It also investigates the elements that are needed to build social harmony in Indonesia, so that the government of the Republic of Indonesia could take the study report as a reference for formulating policy in social development in Indonesia. This study uses a mix-methods research design (quantitative-qualitative) with a descriptive statistical paradigm that describes the mean, SD, percentage, weight, and rank followed by a detailed explanation of the statements given by the subject. The subjects of this study were students of the Department of English, Faculty of Language and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar for the 2019/2020 academic year. The research instrument was a closed and open questionnaire. Therefore, this study indicates that: (1) The results show that several positive behaviors of people from different ethnic groups need to be encouraged, for example tolerance, mutual understanding, mutual respect, not demeaning different tribes, and (2) The results also show that positive stereotypes and inclusive behavior are very important in building social harmony and peace in multi-ethnic countries. The implication of this research is to build social harmony in Indonesia as a multiethnic country that is hampered by hundreds of ethnic groups, cross-cultural competence (CCC) and intercultural communication are very important among Indonesian people, especially for millennials as important elements of social life.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan kemampuan siswa kelas VIII MTsN Rukoh menulis autobiografi. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII-1 yang berjumlah 32 siswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik dokumen. Proses pengolahan dan analisis data meliputi lima tahap yaitu: (1) membaca secara keseluruhan hasil kerja siswa, (2) mendeskripsikan tulisan autobiografi siswa baik struktur autobiografi maupun unsur kebahasaan menulis autobiografi, (3) menyusun nilai siswa menulis autobiografi berdasarkan hasil pendeskripsian, (4) menghitung nilai rata-rata siswa, dan (5) mengambil kesimpulan atas hasil pendeskripsian data. Analisis data yang dilakukan meliputi struktur autobiografi (pengantar, identitas tokoh, keistimewaan tokoh, perjalanan hidup tokoh, dan kesimpulan) dan unsur kebahasaan dalam menulis autobiografi (kalimat, ejaan, diksi, kohesi dan koherensi). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa kelas VIII MTsN Rukoh Banda Aceh mampu menulis autobiografi dengan baik. Pemerolehan nilai rata-rata adalah 78 dan termasuk dalam kategori baik ditinjau dari klasifikasi penilaian Depdiknas yaitu antara 70-84.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan (1) makna tindak tutur lokusi, (2) maksud tindak tutur ilokusi dan tindak tutur perlokusi, (3) jenis konteks tuturan, dan (4) cara penyampaian tindak tutur lokusi, ilokusi, dan perlokusi yang terdapat dalam novel Marwah di Ujung Bara karya R.H. Fitriadi. Data penelitian ini adalah tindak tutur lokusi, ilokusi, dan perlokusi yang bersumber dari novel Marwah di Ujung Bara karya R.H Fitriadi. Novel ini merupakan cetakan I yang diterbitkan di Yogyakarta oleh ProBooks pada tahun 2011. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik dokumentasi, sedangkan teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan teknik deskriptif kualitatif dan analisis pragmatis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa makna yang terkandung dalam tindak tutur lokusi terdiri atas tiga, yaitu (1) makna memberitahukan, (2) makna menanyakan, dan (3) makna memerintah. Maksud yang terkandung dalam tindak tutur ilokusi terdiri atas lima, yaitu (1) ilokusi asertif dengan maksud menyatakan dan menyarankan, (2) ilokusi direktif dengan maksud memerintah, menasihati, memohon, dan merekomendasi, (3) ilokusi ekspresif dengan maksud berterima kasih, meminta maaf, dan memuji, (4) ilokusi komisif dengan maksud menawarkan dan menjanjikan, dan (5) ilokusi deklaratif dengan maksud menghukum dan mengundurkan diri. Selain itu, maksud yang terkandung dalam tindak tutur perlokusi terdiri atas tiga, yaitu (1) maksud verbal, (2) maksud nonverbal, dan (3) maksud verbal nonverbal. Jenis konteks tuturan yang terdapat dalam novel Marwah di Ujung Bara karya R.H. Fitriadi terdiri dari empat, yaitu (1) konteks fisik, (2) konteks linguistik, (3) konteks epistemis, dan (4) konteks sosial. Sementara itu, cara penyampaian tindak tutur yang terdapat dalam novel Marwah di Ujung Bara karya R.H. Fitriadi terdiri dari atas (1) tindak tutur langsung literal, (2) tindak tutur tidak langsung literal, dan (3) tindak tutur tidak langsung tidak literal. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, semua kajian tindak tutur dalam pragmatik ditemukan dalam novel Marwah di Ujung Bara karya R.H. Fitriadi.
