Abstract

For decades, newspapers have become a daily need for people across the globe to update information. There is a tendency of the people to believe in the news published in newspapers, for media is considered neutral. In Indonesia, 212 rallies are the events that were widely reported as headlines for weeks by national and international newspapers. This study showcases the brief portrait of The Jakarta Post representations on the 212 rallies by its use of linguistic properties, to see whether The Jakarta Post is impartial in delivering the news. This study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) strategies and applies the analytical tools drawn from Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG). The data were taken from sixteen 212 rallies related news, including seven headlines, collected from The Jakarta Post archives. The result of this study reveals that by using transitivity and conceptual metaphor, The Jakarta Post tends to stand on the side of the one being protested, and oppose the rallies. This finding suggests newspaper readers to read the information in newspapers more critically, to understand the use of lexicon as well as the structure of sentences to conclude the right interpretation of the news and to realize the representation. By doing so, newspaper readers will not simply accept the news they read.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types and the most dominant illocutionary acts used by the main character in a fantasy movie, ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret’. A descriptive qualitative study was done by observing the utterances spoken by the main character in the movie. The spoken utterances were then analysed based on the types of illocutionary acts, namely: representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative.  The results of the study showed that out of the five, only four types of illocutionary acts were found in the movie, they are representative, directive, expressive, and commissive. The most frequently illocutionary act used is directive (47.64%), while the least frequently used is commissive (4.19%). The directive forces used by the main character are varied. Directives are used get the hearers to do something, where in the movie, he often used asking and ordering. Meanwhile, declarative is not employed by the main character since performing declarative act needs authorities and status; this act is used to change the world through utterances. But the main character in this movie do not have any certain status or authority in any position at the magic school he attended, he is a student, still new with the magic world and do not have much power. This is why declarative was not found in the utterances of the main character.

Abstract

Thesis Defense Examination (TDE) is an assessment that most undergraduate students around the world have to pass in order to graduate from universities. Some students can pass the examination satisfactorily, while others fail due to their poor performance. In the EFL general context, the issue of poor performance of undergraduate students in the TDE conducted in English is a piece of common knowledge among lecturers as the examiners and students as the examinees. Within the Indonesian context, this study aims at investigating students and lecturers’ experiences in Research Methodology (RM) (focusing on written competence) and Seminar on ELT (SoELT) (focusing on oral competence) courses, where the case was taken from the English Education Department of a public university located in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. By using a purposive sampling technique, we involved five students who have passed RM and SoELT, two lecturers who teach RM, and two lecturers who teach SoELT as the participants in this qualitative research. Interviews were employed to gather the data to address the investigation. We consulted Hyland (2004) for the analysis of the teaching and learning of written competence, and Alptekin (2002) to analyze the teaching and learning of oral competence in classroom activities. The results of the analysis show that there are matches and mismatches between what was experienced by the students and what the lecturers experienced. We also found that some activities in the courses hindered students from being competent in their performance in TDE.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the psychological problems perceived by students in speaking English and to examine factors leading to the problems as well as the students' efforts to cope with the problems. A mixed-method design was used in conducting this study. Data collection was done by distributing a questionnaire to sixty-four participants and interviews conducted with ten students participants of MAS Ulumul Quran in Aceh. The data were analyzed using quantitative data analysis (frequency and percentage formula), and interactive models of qualitative data analysis (data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawings). The findings revealed that the most common psychological problems faced by the students were fear of making mistakes with followed by speaking anxiety, lack of confidence, shyness, and lack of motivation. Those problems were caused by their inability to speak English, an unsupportive learning atmosphere, less speaking practice, negative attitude towards English,  afraid of being mocked and underestimated by friends, afraid of being misunderstood, and terrified of appearing foolish. To cope with the problems, the students did many efforts such as pretending not to be panicked, making jokes,  asking friends’ help, preparing before speaking, avoiding eye contact, inviting friends to practice English, motivating themselves to speak English by reading a motivational book or watching motivational videos, etc. In this regard, it was suggested that the teacher should encourage students to stop thinking that English is difficult to learn, stop worrying about friends’ judgments, and stop thinking about mistakes they possibly made when speaking English in the classrooms. Besides, the teacher should encourage students to practice English with peers or their classmates. Finally, the researcher recommends for further researcher to investigate the teacher’s perception of students’ psychological problems and how they overcome the problems when teaching English.

Abstract

A proposal seminar presentation is one of the compulsory activities that university students must undertake before writing their thesis. This usually causes anxiety for students because they have to present their research proposals in front of lecturers as reviewers. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types and causes of speaking anxiety among English Education Department students at Universitas Syiah Kuala during their proposal seminar presentations. This study used a descriptive qualitative design in which questionnaires, interviews and observation were employed as research instruments. The data were collected from ten students who were presenting their research proposals. The analysis, involving percentages and transcript examination, revealed three types of speaking anxiety: test anxiety, communication apprehension, and fear of evaluation. Test anxiety emerged as the most prevalent type. Additionally, the study identified three primary factors contributing to speaking anxiety: fear of making mistakes, insufficient knowledge, and low self-confidence.
