Abstract

Academic achievement is often associated with cognitive ability; however, non-cognitive skills, such as grit, also play an important role in determining learning outcomes. Chemistry is a challenging subject because of the many abstract concepts that require perseverance and dedication to comprehend. This study aimed to examine the relationship between grit and students' cognitive achievement in chemistry learning at the secondary school level, as well as to evaluate the extent to which grit affects learning success. The method used was quantitative, with a survey approach of 200 students in class X in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. The research instruments consisted of a talent questionnaire and a multiple-choice test to measure cognitive chemistry achievement. The data were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation technique after performing prerequisite tests, including normality and homogeneity tests. The results of the analysis showed a significant positive correlation between grit and cognitive achievement (p = 0.001 < 0.05), with a correlation coefficient of 0.234, which is classified as low. These findings indicate that students with higher grit levels tend to have better cognitive performance in chemistry learning, although other factors also play roles. In addition, this study is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal concerning Quality Education, particularly through its focus on the role of non-cognitive skills in learning.

Abstract

Dragonflies are bioindicator insects that are known to be sensitive to the environment and their existence is influenced by habitat conditions. The potential of dragonflies as a bioindicator for the success of reclamation efforts for former tin mining on Bangka Island needs to be studied. This research aims to record the diversity of dragonflies and damselflies in reclaimed land covering an area of ±15.25 ha and aged ±16 years as one component to enrich the criteria for assessing the success of revegetation of ex-tin mining land. This research was conducted in the rainy season, January-March 2023. For three weeks, Schnabel's visual encounter survey (VES) and capture-mark-release-recapture (CMRR) methods were chosen to observe five transect lines, respectively non-revegetation areas, horticultural and fruit revegetation areas, oil palm revegetation areas, kolong with tilapia fish, and kolong with human activities. This research recorded 19 species of dragonflies and 6 species of damselflies, or around 6.5% of the dragonflies and 2.0% of the damselfly species on the island of Sumatra. The most dominant species are Neurothemis fluctuans and Ceriagrion cerinorubellum. The number of species and number of individual dragonflies is thought to be related to the age of reclamation, and has the potential to be an indicator of the success of ex-tin mining reclamation land. Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of student's understanding of complex chemical concepts, which is the main challenge in learning chemistry at the high school level. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the impact of academic persistence, teacher innovation, and school climate on the cognitive achievement of high school students in chemistry learning. This study employed a non-experimental, quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The study subjects consisted of 1,057 high school students in North Maluku Province. Data were collected through a questionnaire that included 26 items for cognitive achievement, 10 items for academic persistence, and instruments to measure teacher innovation and school climate. Data analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the relationship between variables. The results showed that academic persistence had a significant effect on students' cognitive achievement (P-value = 0.659). Teacher innovation also had a significant positive effect (P-value = 0.634), while school climate did not show a significant effect. Academic persistence has been proven to be the primary predictor of students' commitment and resilience in facing learning challenges. This finding also highlights the importance of teacher innovation, particularly in the application of technology-based and interactive learning methods, in enhancing student learning outcomes. The implications of this study underscore the need for strategies that enhance chemistry learning, focusing on strengthening student character and promoting pedagogical innovation. Further research is recommended to refine the model by incorporating additional variables to enhance chemistry learning in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) identify the best model of relationships among learning self-efficacy, learning approaches, and self-regulated learning on the chemistry aspirations of high school students during the pandemic, and (2) determine the structural equation model (SEM) that best represents these relationships, including the relevant dimensions and indicators for each variable. This quantitative research employed a survey method, path analysis, and SEM approach. The sample consisted of 603 students from the Cirebon district, selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Prior to statistical analysis, prerequisite tests including normality, homogeneity, and outlier detection were conducted. Validity and reliability were examined using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses. The findings revealed that the learning approach had the most significant direct association with students’ chemistry aspirations, whereas self-efficacy and self-regulated learning showed indirect relationships. Interestingly, surface motives rather than deep strategies were found to be more strongly linked to chemistry aspirations, suggesting that students’ engagement is primarily driven by performance goals and exam success. This context-dependent finding reflects Indonesia’s teacher-centered and exam-oriented learning culture. The most influential indicator was students’ initiative to use their free time to explore chemistry topics, while the least influential was self-control during unsupervised study. These results highlight the need to design learning strategies that gradually transform surface motives into deeper, intrinsic engagement through reflective, inquiry-based, and feedback oriented learning.

Abstract

Teaching chemistry is a complex subject that requires a certain level of knowledge and skills to understand. Students must overcome this challenge because teaching chemistry involves abstract ideas (atoms, molecules, and electrons) and principles, laws, reaction equations, and mathematical operations. Increasing academic resilience is important in enhancing students' understanding and well-being in learning. This research aimed to test the validity and reliability of students' chemistry academic resilience tests using the Rasch model. Data collection was conducted using Google Forms. Data analysis utilized the Rasch model, assisted by the Winstep application, to reveal various aspects of the assessment. Based on the research findings, a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.78 indicates strong internal consistency. In addition, item reliability reached a significant value of 0.99, while person reliability of 0.78 confirmed the consistency of respondents in providing accurate answers in the assessed categories. Furthermore, the OUTFIT and INFIT MNSQ (persons) have average values of +1.02 and +1.01, respectively (the closer to 1, the better). In contrast, the INFIT and OUTFIT ZSTD values are 0.1 and 0.3, respectively (the closer to 0, the better). The most difficult question is coded ra11 with a logit score of 0.61, and the easiest is coded ra4 with a logit score of -0.05. Therefore, the student academic resilience instrument is an effective measuring tool. In the future, chemistry educators and researchers can benefit from the potential impact of this research on Indonesian education.

Abstract

This study examines the early development of student learning independence instruments in chemistry learning using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The purpose of this study is to develop a learning independence instrument that specifically measures chemistry learning independence. A quantitative survey approach was used in this investigation. The research sample used was 642 students of class XI MIPA 1 from 10 State Senior High Schools in Bantul Regency, then the sample determination was carried out using a random sampling technique. The instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of 16 items. Sixteen items on a 5-point Likert scale representing students' perceptions of themselves were used to collect data. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) is the data analysis method used. The learning independence questionnaire filled out by 642 respondents was analyzed using the JASP for Windows 10 application. All items from the EFA analysis results were acceptable because they had a factor value of >0.3. While the results of the CFA test showed that all items were valid with a p value <0.05; *** significance and SLF value ≥ 0.5 and reliable with CR value ≥ 0.70 and AVE value of at least 0.5. The results obtained prove that the instrument is valid and can be used to measure the independence of learning chemistry.

Abstract

This study addresses the low levels of chemical literacy and student self-efficacy by implementing a context-based learning approach using the Prediction–Observation–Explanation (POE) strategy. The research aimed to assess the differences and effective contributions of chemical literacy and self-efficacy before and after the intervention, and to compare students taught with the POE-based approach versus those using a scientific approach. A quantitative method was used with a quasi-experimental design, including both dependent pre-test and post-test without a control group, and independent pre-test and post-test with a control group. The sample consisted of four randomly selected 11th-grade classes. Instruments included 10 chemical literacy pre-test items, 9 post-test items, and 23 self-efficacy questionnaire items focused on the Thermochemistry unit. Data were analyzed using Paired Sample T-tests and Independent Sample T-tests. Results showed a significant improvement in chemical literacy after implementing the POE strategy, confirming its effectiveness in enhancing conceptual understanding. However, student self-efficacy did not show a statistically significant change, although a slight positive trend was observed. The study concludes that while the POE strategy effectively enhances chemical literacy, it is insufficient for improving self-efficacy, suggesting the need for more sensitive measurement tools and additional strategies to support affective learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research aims to develop and validate a new instrument for measuring chemistry teacher’s self-efficacy for differentiated instruction. Data was collected using developed questions based on a literature study. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and correlational techniques based on responses from 156 chemistry teachers in Yogyakarta who participated in an offline and online survey. The findings from EFA, CFA, and correlation analysis provide sufficient empirical evidence to support the convergent and discriminant validity of the instrument. The high Cronbach’s coefficient alpha values show the instrument’s good internal consistency and reliability. We documented a valid and reliable chemistry teachers’ self-efficacy for differentiated instruction with six constructs consisting of 22 items by integrating the evidence from theory and data. The six-factor scale is named "efficacy in differentiating the learning process, efficacy in differentiating learning content, efficacy in differentiating learning products, efficacy in identifying student differences, efficacy in assessment, and efficacy in differentiating the learning environment". This instrument enriches the theoretical understanding of teacher self-efficacy in differentiated instruction by providing a domain-specific measurement model tailored for chemistry education. Practically, the scale offers teacher educators, policymakers, and professional development programs a diagnostic tool to identify teachers’ strengths and areas needing support, enabling more targeted training interventions to enhance differentiated instruction in classroom practice.
