Abstract

This research is aimed to analyse internal conflicts as well as the major causes of those conflicts. In order to analyse the two types of conflict proposed by Robert Stanton as well as other theories or concepts related to the study and identification of conflict, such as Lewis Coser and William Kenney, the researchers employ a psychology of literature approach since the core analysis of this study is through the psychology of the character and is supported by behaviourism perspective because it deals with the behavioural phenomena. The boundaries for choosing the causes of conflicts are set by Hoffman where he states that the two major causes of conflicts are conflicting perception and conflicting needs. Frank Herbert's novel Dune serves as the primary source of information for this qualitative descriptive study, while other books and related publications serve as secondary sources following Creswell's data collection and analysis methodology. The results of the analysis show that internal conflicts experienced by Paul Atreides are often caused by conflicting perception and conflicting needs, since those conflicts caused by conflicting perceptions and needs are almost always on the intersections which Paul needs to choose for the story to progress.

Abstract

The research is related to social problems. People's lives are actually changing with the times. In the process of the changing, sometimes unexpected conditions arise or should not occur. This unexpected condition gradually becomes a polemic and has a negative impact on people's lives. This condition is called a social problem. Social problems cannot be ignored because they can disrupt global economic and political stability. The discussion of this research focuses on two social problems: poverty and prostitution. Poverty is the condition of a person who has no wealth, lacks, or has very low income and of course cannot fulfill his daily needs; while poverty is also closely related to prostitution. One can become a prostitute because of poverty or circumstances. Prostitution is a sexual activity outside the institution of marriage and is generally carried out by women. These two social problems can be found not only in the novel but also in the real world; so the sociology of literature is used as an approach in this research. The whole research is conducted using a qualitative descriptive method because the focus of the research is related to social problems. The results of the analysis show that this novel provides two descriptions of social problems: poverty and prostitution and these two social problems are clearly illustrated through the data obtained from the novel.

Abstract

This study is based on Tere Liye's novel Negeri Para Bedebah, which deals with personality types. Thomas or Tommi is a professional financial consultant and the founder of Thomas Co., a major financial consulting firm. Thomas is a one-of-a-kind individual since his co-workers regard him as adaptable. Thomas has a labile personality in the sense that his behavior is unpredictable and also changeable, adjusting to a certain situation. The grand theory used to support the whole research is the one proposed by Gerard Heymen, in which it is stated that every individual’s personality is unique and could be adjusted to a certain condition. Literary psychology is applied as an approach in the study, as literary psychology conducts literary studies by looking at literary works as psychological activities for both the author and the readers. The study is conducted by the descriptive qualitative method, showing the personality of the main character; this is a type of individual phenomenon that can also be found in society. The results show that the protagonist has three significant types of personality: smartness, self-support, and responsibility.

Abstract

This paper explores the impacts of using smartphones vs laptops on students' academic achievement in their English courses and their satisfaction in learning English via open distance learning (ODL). Experiments were conducted in authentic teaching sessions with a total of 304 undergraduates from a local university. The methodology applied is a quasi-experimental design with post-test-only. Results indicate that the relationship between the grade obtained and level of satisfaction with gadget is low and not significant at 5% level of significance. However, there is a significant relationship between the level of satisfaction towards gadgets used for learning English courses and learning English via ODL classes since the p-value is significant with a correlation value of 0.455. Finally, there is a low correlation between the grade obtained and level of satisfaction in learning English during ODL classes. Future research should be conducted to further check on the effects of using mobile phones against other mobile devices on other subjects learnt in the universities.
