Abstract

This research aims to analyze how Anastasia portrays themes of liberal feminism and individualism. It investigates how the protagonist’s journey embodies feminist ideals of self-discovery, resilience, and the defiance of gender expectations. Grounded in liberal feminist theory, which emphasizes personal autonomy and equality before the law (McMillan, 2009); this study employs qualitative descriptive methods to explore how Anastasia’s narrative reflects these principles. Themes such as identity formation, gender norms, and personal agency are analyzed through the protagonist’s experiences. The analysis reveals that Anastasia challenges traditional gender roles by portraying feminine traits—compassion, resilience, and emotional intelligence—as strengths rather than weaknesses. The protagonist’s journey from orphaned amnesiac to rediscovered princess illustrates themes of empowerment and self-determination within a feminist framework. The film’s depiction of Anastasia’s relationships and challenges underscores the broader feminist discourse on identity and societal expectations. By confronting external pressures and embracing her true self, Anastasia embodies the resilience and agency central to feminist ideals. Through its narrative complexity and thematic depth, Anastasia contributes meaningfully to feminist discourse. It celebrates personal growth; challenges gender stereotypes, and advocates for women’s empowerment. The study concludes with reflections on the enduring relevance of feminist themes in animated media and their impact on audiences.

Abstract

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, a seminal work in American literature, profoundly explores the roles, aspirations, and challenges faced by women in the 19th century. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War and its aftermath, the novel follows the lives of the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—as they navigate the complexities of womanhood in a society governed by rigid gender norms. Through rich character development and a compelling narrative, Little Women offers insight into the evolving landscape of women's rights and feminist thought during a pivotal era in American history. This paper aims to analyze the representation of feminism in Little Women, examining how the novel both conforms to and challenges traditional gender expectations. Drawing on liberal, Marxist, existentialist, and radical feminist theories, the paper explores various aspects of the March sisters' experiences, shedding light on their pursuit of autonomy, independence, and self-determination. Through a comprehensive analysis of key passages and character dynamics, the study uncovers the ways in which Alcott's work contributes to the broader discourse surrounding women's rights and gender equality.

Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of liberal feminism in Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes series, focusing on how the narrative challenges societal perceptions of women's intellectual and physical capabilities. Liberal feminism, rooted in the first wave of feminism, emphasizes equality through legal reforms and individual rights. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze Enola Holmes, highlighting the character's defiance of Victorian societal norms. Enola's rejection of traditional schooling and pursuit of autonomy underscore themes of gender equality and personal freedom. Supported by her mother, Eudoria Holmes, Enola embodies resilience and self-determination, advocating for women's rights to define their identities independently. Through qualitative analysis of dialogues and actions, this study illuminates how Enola Holmes champions liberal feminist ideals of gender equality and individual empowerment. The findings reveal Enola as a transformative figure challenging patriarchal constraints, inspiring reflection on gender roles and advocating for societal change towards equality and personal fulfillment.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this service is to improve English for Nazhirul Asrofi Educational Foundation Kindergarten students. In reality, learning English is not an easy thing for kindergarten students. This is caused by several problems, including a lack of creativity as a teacher in implementing learning methods for kindergarten students. Many kindergarten students feel bored when learning English, so the author carries out Community Service, in order to help teachers at the Nazhirul Asrofi Educational Foundation Kindergarten by using different methods in teaching English, namely by telling stories and singing. With this training, the participants understand what all students experience in learning English, therefore all participants use learning media that is adapted to the method being taught and practice how to teach English using this method. Keyword: Sing a Song Method; English; Kindergarten Learning.  Abstrak: Tujuan akhir dari Pengabdian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa TK Yayasan Pendidikan Nazhirul Asrofi. Kenyataannya, Belajar Bahasa Inggris bukanlah hal yang mudah bagi siswa TK. Hal ini disebabkan dari beberapa masalah, diantaranya karena kurangnya kreatifitas seorang guru dalam mengimplementasikan metode belajar bagi siswa TK. Banyak siswa TK merasa bosan Ketika belajar Bahasa Inggris, maka penulis meleksanakan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat, guna untuk membantu guru di TK Yayasan Pendidikan Nazhirul Asrofi dengan menggunakan metode yang berbeda dalam mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris, yaitu dengan cara metode bercerita dan bernyanyi. Dengan pelatihan ini para peserta paham yang dialami oleh seluruh siswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, oleh karena itu semua peserta menggunakan media pembelajaran bercerita dan bernyanyi yang disesuaikan dengan metode yang diajarkan agar pembelajaran menjadi lebih efektif dan menarik. Kata kunci: Metode Sing a Song; Bahasa Inggris; Pembelajaran di TK

Abstract

This research aims to describe the relationship among ecolinguistics, andaliman, and Batak Culture. It explains how andaliman as Batak’s spices can hold ecolinguistics and Batak Culture. This study employs a qualitative research approach where the data is taken from observation, interviews, and documentation. The finding indicates that in Batak culture, andaliman is not just a culinary ingredient but also an important part of traditional rituals and festivities. The spice is deeply ingrained in the cultural identity of the Batak people such as: Social Interaction, Batak’s Connection to Nature, Respect for Natural Resources, Spiritual Beliefs, Modern Batak Culture, Preserving Tradition in a Modern World, Andaliman in Tourism, and Cultural Connector. It means that andaliman and and Batak culture is not only ecological but also linguistic and symbolic. Andaliman holds cultural significance to be tied to local stories, practices, and beliefs about the plant's power. The symbolic value of andaliman in these contexts goes beyond its flavor and is woven into the cultural fabric of Batak life. Language functions as a vehicle for passing down traditional ecological knowledge, ensuring the continued use and conservation of plants like andaliman. plays a significant role in shaping attitudes toward the sustainable harvesting of plants like andaliman. The way elders talk about andaliman could serve as a cultural guide to ensuring that its use is sustainable and harmonious with nature.

Abstract

This study examines the rhetorical strategies, ideological rhetoric, and political ideology of nation-building presented by Prabowo Subianto in his inauguration speech as the newly elected president of Indonesia on October 20, 2024. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis is grounded in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to reveal the underlying rhetorical devices and ideological themes conveyed in his speech. The study is structured through two interlinked dimensions: rhetorical strategies and ideological rhetoric, utilizing Aristotle’s rhetorical concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos to provide a comprehensive interpretation of the speech. The analysis addresses key themes such as sovereignty, the relationship between the state and its citizens, justice, equality, the vision of a "Great Indonesia," the plight of wong cilik (the ordinary people), and the cultural principle of gotong royong (cooperation). These themes are pivotal to Prabowo’s articulation of Indonesia's identity and vision for the nation’s future. Findings reveal that Prabowo employs a balanced array of rhetorical strategies, ethos, and pathos, accounting for approximately 30% of the speech, focusing on his credibility and emotional connection with the audience. Logos, comprising 40% of the rhetoric, underscores logical and structured arguments, enhancing his appeal to rational thought. The ideological rhetoric, meanwhile, emphasizes national sovereignty, justice, and unity, reflecting Prabowo’s deep-seated vision for an independent and resilient Indonesia. His ideology resonates with themes of independence and self-reliance, advocating a stance against foreign influence, and drawing from Indonesia’s historical struggles for independence. This study sheds light on how Prabowo's rhetorical strategies and ideological expressions serve to frame political discourse and contribute to the formation of national identity, underscoring the role of presidential rhetoric in shaping the public's perception of leadership and vision for Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates the environmentally sustainable production methods of Teri Medan, a popular anchovy product from Medan, Indonesia, which has become an eco-conscious souvenir distributed through local markets and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM). The research problem centers on how Teri Medan production integrates sustainable practices and how these are reflected in local cultural narratives. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The study employs an ecolinguistic framework, which analyzes the language used to describe and communicate environmental values in the production process. Ecolinguistics, a discipline that examines the relationship between language and the environment, provides tools for identifying key cultural terms and narratives that convey sustainability practices. Findings reveal that Teri Medan production emphasizes sustainability across various stages, from selective fishing techniques, such as the use of gill nets that protect marine ecosystems, to eco-friendly methods in washing, boiling, sun-drying, sorting, and packaging. These practices not only minimize environmental impact but also enhance Teri Medan’s role as a cultural symbol of Medan’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The study highlights how promoting Teri Medan as a souvenir that embodies local traditions and sustainable values can contribute to the growth of sustainable tourism and serve as a model for eco-friendly souvenir production, aligning with global trends in responsible tourism.

Abstract

This study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk’s methodological framework. Since its release in 1975, the song has captivated audiences with its intricate composition and enigmatic lyrics, sparking diverse interpretations. This research explores how language and discourse within the lyrics reflect, construct, and challenge dominant ideologies and power structures. Through van Dijk’s model, the study examines the macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure of the song in relation to social cognition and contextual influences. By analyzing linguistic choices, narrative elements, and intertextual meanings, the research reveals how the song navigates themes of identity, defiance, and existential turmoil. The findings indicate that Bohemian Rhapsody extends beyond its musical significance, functioning as a vehicle for cultural critique and social reflection. This study underscores the interdisciplinary relevance of CDA in music analysis, highlighting how discourse in popular songs both shapes and mirrors sociocultural dynamics, reinforcing their role in critical discourse studies.

Abstract

This research investigates the symbolic representation of the ulos in Batak culture from an ecolinguistic perspective, highlighting its role as a cultural artifact deeply intertwined with language, tradition, and the environment. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with weavers, Raja Perhata (cultural experts), and traditional leaders who possess deep knowledge of the ulos. The study focuses on specific Toba Batak ulos, such as Ragi Hidup, Ragi Hotang, and Sibolang, each symbolizing unique aspects of Batak values and worldviews. Ragi Hidup conveys blessings for happiness, offspring, and longevity, particularly during wedding ceremonies, while Ragi Hotang is associated with respect and honor, and Sibolang signifies the act of paying homage. These symbolic meanings are intricately embedded in the patterns, colors, and material composition of the ulos, reflecting their significance in Batak society. The findings reveal that the ulos is not merely a textile but a vessel of cultural meaning, encompassing prayers for prosperity, social status, and well-being. Through the lens of ecolinguistics, this study demonstrates how the ulos, as a cultural symbol, contributes to the sustainability of Batak traditions by encoding and perpetuating ecological and social values within its symbolic framework. The research underscores the critical importance of preserving these traditional symbols to maintain the cultural heritage and identity of the Bataknese people while offering broader insights into the role of language and culture in sustaining community values.

Abstract

This research examines gender stereotypes, and the roles and positions of women in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. The analysis utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach, presenting and describing the data and findings in narrative form. The theoretical framework is grounded in Rosenstand's (2021) feminism, which advocates for equal opportunities and pay for women and men, free from gender-based discrimination. The research findings reveal four types of feminism depicted in the Little Women, focusing on the characters' choices between achieving their dreams and living within the confines of marriage. Little Women not only chronicles the characters' journeys from adolescence to adulthood but also illustrates their encounters with gender stereotypes embedded in societal and cultural constructs. The conclusion underscores the marginalized position of women, who lack the same opportunities as men. Various societal constraints limit women's freedoms, placing them in restrictive social roles and causing internal conflicts between pursuing personal desires and adhering to societal expectations.
