Abstract

Students' low STEM literacy level is a major challenge in 21st-century education, particularly in preparing students to face real-world problems. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the STEM engineering design process (STEM-EDP) approach in enhancing students STEM literacy in the context of earthquake disaster mitigation. A quasi-experimental method was used with 50 eighth-grade students divided into an experimental group (28 students) and a control group (22 students). The experimental group applied the STEM-EDP approach, while the control group received conventional instruction. The results show that the STEM-EDP approach significantly improved students STEM literacy, with an average N-Gain of 0.33 (moderate category), compared to 0.23 (low category) in the control group. These findings indicate that the STEM-EDP approach enhances STEM literacy more effectively than conventional methods. This approach is relevant for addressing 21st-century challenges by integrating STEM literacy into meaningful learning experiences, particularly within the context of authentic, project-based education

Abstract

Many science teachers have not yet used reflection as a means of learning evaluation, making it difficult for them to identify problems and find solutions. They also face challenges in determining the right medium for reflection. This study aims to explore the use of Padlet as a reflection tool for science teachers. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving three science teachers as qualitative data sources and 52 students as quantitative research subjects, divided into two classes. Data analysis was conducted using N-Vivo for qualitative data and SPSS for quantitative data, with t-tests and N-Gain tests applied to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that all three teachers agreed that using Padlet significantly improves learning quality. Quantitative data confirms the effectiveness of Padlet in enhancing reflective skills, with a t-test result of 0.000 and an N-Gain score of 75%. These figures indicate that learning with Padlet, integrated with the Group Investigation model in the experimental class, is categorized as effective. This study serves as a reference for science teachers to innovate in using technology for learning reflection, as Padlet has been proven to facilitate reflection for both teachers and students in science education.

Abstract

One of the skills that students must master is problem solving abilities, in which students will learn tosolve problems in their surroundings. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the PBL (ProblemBased Learning) model integrated with the Science Education for Sustainability Development (SESD)approach to students' problem solving abilities. The use of the SESD-integrated PBL model in problemsolving ability is something new that has never been done. The study used a quasi-experimental designquantitative method with a pretest-posttest design. The research sample was 24 students of grade 8thjunior high school as an experimental class that applied the integrated PBL model with SESD and 24students of grade 8th junior high school as the control class that applied the non-PBL model integratedwith SESD. Data collection techniques used observation sheets, tests, and questionnaires, which wereanalyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the two-tailed t-test yielded a P-Value of0.001, where if the P-Value < α = 5% (0.05), then H0 was rejected. So it shows that there is a significantdifference in problem solving ability between the experimental class and the control class. The results ofthe one-tailed t-test that has been carried out produce a P-Value of 0.001 so that H0 is accepted. Theresults of the one-tailed t-test also show an estimate for a difference of 13.85. Therefore, the test decisioncan be stated that the problem solving abilities of students in the experimental class are better than thosein the control class. The ANCOVA test shows that the value of Sig. of 0.010 < α (0.05) shows that thePBL model integrated with SESD is considered effective for problem solving abilities. So it can beconcluded that students' problem solving abilities using integrated PBL models with SESD are moreeffective than students' problem solving abilities using non-PBL models integrated with SESD
