Abstract

This study aims to investigate Indonesian senior high school teachers’ perceptions of using the first language (L1) when teaching English because Indonesian teachers tend to have negative perceptions toward the application of the L1, while the L1 is needed in a situation where Indonesian students have limited skills in English. The semi-structured interview was applied to collect data, while thematic analysis was used to analyse it. The result showed that the teachers have three different positions in perceiving the use of the L1: the virtual position, maximal, and optimal positions. Although they have different perceptions toward the application of the L1, a major insight can be concluded about the limited use of the L1 for specific reasons, such as considering teachers’ and students’ English abilities, learners’ needs, and the type and the difficulty of the given task or assignment. The L1 can be functioned as scaffolding in three aspects: when teaching grammar, vocabulary, and when giving instructions. Teachers may consider this study’s results as the information to use the L1 in classrooms. This may also be beneficial for Indonesian educational stakeholders and the government to specifically define what type of scaffolding that teachers can use the L1 to teach English.

Abstract

This research aims to overcome several challenges in vocational education, primarily related to the lack of learning tools and the development of 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. This research uses the research and development (RD) model with the ADDIE development procedure, with the steps analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data was collected through surveys, interviews, and observations of students and teachers during the teaching and learning process. The research results show that the augmented reality-competency based learning (AR-CBL) application effectively increases students’ understanding of computer network material. Apart from that, AR-CBL also has the potential to be an interactive learning tool that can improve student learning motivation. The AR-CBL learning model resulting from this research can support the development of technical skills and critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity (4C) abilities. The implementation of AR-CBL also has the potential to improve educational standards in vocational schools and help graduates better match industry needs. With the results of this research, schools and education stakeholders can consider using AR-CBL technology in the vocational school curriculum to prepare graduates to face the world of work in this digital era.

Abstract

Teaching pronunciation skills in English is an important aspect that needs to be paid attention to in the learning process. Many students have difficulty pronouncing certain sounds, such as /r/, /l/, /θ/, and /ð/. Therefore, teachers need to apply methods that are engaging, interactive, and in accordance with the needs of students. One of the methods used in this study is the tongue twister game which is considered effective in practicing pronunciation in a fun way. This study aims to describe the application of the sound repetition game method in pronunciation learning in grade VII of SMPN 1 Sitiung and to identify its advantages and weaknesses. The approach used is qualitative descriptive with a case study design. The data collection technique was carried out through observation and interviews with teachers and students of grade VII for the 2025/2026 school year. The results of the study show that this method is applied gradually, starting from giving examples by teachers to taking turns reciting practice by students. The use of media in the form of text and pictures helps students' understanding. The students' responses showed increased confidence and pronunciation ability. The learning atmosphere became more active and fun. However, some challenges were also found, such as the need for longer time and there are still students who lack confidence when speaking in front of the class.Teaching pronunciation skills in English is an important aspect that needs to be paid attention to in the learning process.
