Abstract

Karst formations in Selasari and Parakanmanggu Village of Parigi District, Pangandaran Regency, West Java includes dolines, subterranean stream, springs, and karst hills are useful for agriculture. The purpose of this study was to 1) identifiy the used of karst area for rice cultivation and local trees in karst area; 2) evaluate the benefit of rice cultivation and local tree for local communities and 3) asses the legal aspect for supporting food crop production. The study was done using qualitative-descriptive method with the primary data obtained from field observations, soil analysis, local tree identification, and interviews. Secondary data was obtained from the Regional Government and the National Geological Agency. The results showed that rice cultivation has been carried out in suitable soil by using simple and rainfed irrigation. Local fruit, herbs, timber and shade-ornamental tree grow naturally on the karst area. Tree logging without significant revegetation caused water supply shortage so that farmers only grow rice once a year. Athough the rice productivity of both villages is lower than average rice productivity of Pangandaran Regency, rice is important to support local inhabitant’s consumption and family income. Land Use Plan year 2018 regulates the general provisions on zoning regulations for agriculture in susceptible area but the regulation does not mention the karst areas. This study suggested that tree conservation is needed to maintain the existence of rice fields. Land use planning for agriculture in the region must be based on integrated considerations of rice cultivation and local tree conservation.

Abstract

Abstract

Ultisol is low fertility soil and as low available P due to P fixation by Al and Fe. The phosphate solubilizing microbes (PSM) is the microbial group that enable realease fixed-P to soil solution and be absorbed by plant. This research was aimed to determine the effects of PSM biofertilizer and phosphate fertilizer dosage combination on soil potential P, total phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) population and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) grown in Ultisols. This research used a Randomized Block Design that consist of nine treatments with three replications. The treatments were 100 kg ha-1 of SP-36 fertilizer, 50 kg ha-1 of PSM biofertilizer, SP-36 fertilizer (50 kg ha-1 and 100 kg ha-1) with PSM biofertilizer (25 kg ha-1, 50 kg ha-1 and 75 kg ha-1) repectively. The result showed that the combination of PSM and phosphate fertilizer dosage had significantly effect on PSB total population and maize yield, but did not not on  potential P. This experiment suggested that SP-36 fertilizer with 50 kg ha-1 dosage and PSM biofertilizer with 50 kg ha-1 dosage is the best combination.

Abstract

Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) which are comonly grown  in the highland with Andisols require organic and inorganic fertilizers to maintain soil health  and increase yield. The purpose of field experiment  was to obtain information on the effect of vermicompost with and without NPK fertilizer  on soil acidity,  soil phosphor (P) availability and P uptake in potatoes shoot; as well as yield and quality of tuber. The experimental design was a randomized block design with eight treatments and three replication. The treatment consisted of a combination of vermicompost doses (5 and 10 t/ha)  with NPK fertilizer doses (0; 0.5 t/ha and 1 t/ha). The two control treatments were 1) without fertilizer and 2) the method of fertilizing local farmers included 10 t /ha chicken manure and 1 t/ha NPK fertilizer. This experiment verified  that vermicompost and NPK fertilizer increased plant height as well as soil P availability and acidity compared to those of control. Vermicompost has not yet substitute chicken manure to obtain the same tuber production although the percentage of marketable tuber was quite similar.  Keywords : Andisols, NPK Fertilizer, Phosphorus, Potato, Vermicompost.

Abstract

The growth of nutmeg seeds requires adequate nutrition by mechanism of bacteria activity associated with roots and leaves. The aim of study was to determine the effect of application of bacillus strain consortium biofertilizer on nutmeg seedlings. The experiment was arranged by using completely randomized design with 0% of PBH as control, and 0.15% and 0,30% of PBH concentration by spraying to leaves and by pouring in the soil around the stem, respectivelly. The results showed that the application of 0.15% and 0.30% of PBH concentration has significant effect in plant height, shoot dry weight, dry weight root and plant dry weight, but not at the number of root, root length, stem diameter, and the ratio of shoot and root dry weight of nutmeg seedlings after four month planting in the polybag. The concentration of PBH 0.30% has a greater influence on the nutmeg seed growth, and can be a solution to increasee  seed growth.

Abstract

The spore-forming Bacillus and cysts forming Azotobacter are Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria which has been used as biofertilizer in sustainable agriculture since they tolerant to dried soil. Drought resistant microbes will be useful to coat urea in order to reduce the lost of nitrogen. The objectives of this preliminary study were to study the effect of molasse based liquid media on the population of Bacillus spore and Azotobacter vegetative cell and to determine the composition of four bacterial species in liquid formula. In the first experiment The Bacillus subtilis, B. megaterium, A. chroococcum and A. vinelandii were grown separately in 1% cane molasses enriched with 0.1% NH4Cl. As control treatment, The Bacillus and Azotobacter were grown in Nutrient Broth and Ashby’s mannitol broth respectively. In the second experiment, different composition of said Bacillus and Azotobacter were grown in molasses based liquid media prior to count the spore and vegetative cell. The results showed that molasses-based media supported bacterial growth and initial ratio 1:1:1:1 of liquid inoculant was effective to increase bacterial growth. This experiment suggested that the use of organic based media was useful practice of liquid biofertilizer formulation for granule urea coating.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest coconut (Coconus nucifera L.) producing country in the world. Cocopeat can be mixed with chicken manure because of its relatively higher nutrient content compared to other manures. Cocopeat and chicken manure mixture can be an alternative to soilless planting media to support sustainable agriculture. In this study, the chemical and biological characters of cocopeat and chicken manure mixture were analyzed. Five different of combinations of cocopeat and chicken manure mixture: A (1: 1), B (2: 1), C (1: 2), D (2: 3), E (3: 2) were used as treatment. A Completely Randomize Design (CRD) with two replications were used. Data were analyzed with Independent T-test methods. The lowest C/N (33,39) was from D treatment (2:3), highest P2O5 content (0,08%) by C treatment (2:1), highest K2O content (0,03%) from A treatment (1:1) as control, the highest Ca-dd content (31,3%) was E treatment (3:2), and the highest Mg-dd content (1,45%) was obtained from control. All treatments reached the minimum moisture content limit for planting media. The total number of highest bacteria (161 x 107 cfu/g) is showed by D treatment (2:3), and the highest fungi level (58 x104 cfu/g) shown by C treatment (2:1).

Abstract

Application of certain fertilizer during long-term food crops production, might increase the heavy metal (HM) level in soil. An inexpensive and easy method to decrease this contaminant uptake by plants is application of humic acid (HA) which has the capacity to bind toxic substances. Pot experiment had been conducted to observe the influence of organic-based HA on the growth and yield of rice grown in soil contaminated with Cadmium and Lead. The experiment laid in Randomized Block Design with four treatments and six replications. Rice was grown in Inceptisols and treated with HA extracted from various organic matter. Control plants did not receive any HA. All plants had not shown any HM toxicity symptoms. The plant height as well as straw dry weight in HA-treated soil was no different with control plant. Various HA decreased available Cadmium and Lead in soil and in unhusked grain but did not affect yield traits. However, the reduced content of HM was also caused by soil acidity that shift to neutral during puddling. This experiment suggested that HA have a role to control HM availability in paddy soil and hence reduced their uptake by rice plants.

Abstract

The coffee nursery is susceptible to endoparasitic Pratylenchus coffeae. Application of biological method in the nursery is suggested to control the nematode population and maintain the seedling health. The objectives of this study were to observe the ability of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF) Glomus spp. and liquid inoculant of Mycorrhiza Helper Bacteria (MHB) consortium Pseudomonas diminuta and Bacillus subtilis for increasing AMF colonization and reducing the infection P. coffeae in Arabica coffee seedling and their growth. A pot experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Block Design with four treatments and five replications. The treatments were Glomus spp. spore inoculation without and with two concentrations of MHB. The control treatment did not receive Glomus spp. and MHB. The seedlings were growing in the greenhouse for three months. The results indicated that Glomus spp. and MHB consortium significantly reduced the nematode total number in soil and roots by approximately 30%; and infection degree of P. coffeae by 50%. The application of Glomus spp. significantly increased root colonization by mycorrhizal fungi, but MHB inoculation did not affect the mycorrhizal colonization. Seedlings treated with MHB had higher shoot length compared to the plant without MHB and control; but the leaves number and shoot dry weight of seedlings were not affected by all treatments. Even though the root fresh weight was reduced after MHB treatment, the lateral roots growth of MHB-treated seedling visually was improved. The experiment demonstrated that MHB was efficient to reduce P. coffeae infection of Arabica seedling.
