Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at displaying the results of reviewing research-based articles about gamification in the context of learning English. The concept of games has changed from a self-entertainment into an edutainment through adjustments and modifications. This notion is adapted by teachers in big countries such as Poland, China, and the US to enhance their English class with surprisingly ensuing positive results (Rothwell & Shaffer, 2019). These results have triggered the writer to find out more about the benefits of gamification and to conduct qualitative research through the review process. The writer collected and analyzed thirteen relevant articles from journals and websites. The results indicated that gamification indeed brought benefits to students. The foremost results included motivation improvement, promoting positive attitudes and better performances, fostering 21st-century skills and better cognitive achievements, encouraging social interaction and independencies, and improving competitiveness among students during the learning process.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan hasil dari telaah artikel berbasis riset tentang gamifikasi pada konteks pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look into the use of collaborative writing techniques to help higher secondary students enhance their writing skills and soft skills. This was done based on the findings of earlier studies that showed the effectiveness of collaborative writing techniques in increasing students' writing abilities and soft skills development. Students in Grade 10 at Sekolah Tunas Bangsa Kubu Raya participated in the study, which used a mixed-methods research methodology. For qualitative data, an observation checklist and field note was used, while for quantitative data, a questionnaire and writing tasks were used. The researchers discovered that collaborative writing was effective in improving students' writing proficiency and soft skills after they evaluated and calculated the data. (1) improvements in writing task mean scores from 78.67 in Meeting 1 to 87.13 in Meeting 3; (2) students' responses on a questionnaire about their writing ability and soft skills reached 92 percent in elaborating ideas and 93 percent in gaining self-esteem and confidence; (3) improvements in observation checklists that were performed excellently (scale 4) by the observers on the third meeting; and (4) the note taker's complimentary comments on the field notes about the pupils' writing abilities and soft skills As a result of this data, it is suggested that collaborative writing techniques be used with higher secondary students to improve both writing performance and soft skills.

Abstract

This research aims at describing and interpreting the deictic expressions of personal deixis in the Gift of the Magi short story. This research specifically examined the appearance of personal deixis and the interpretations of the context. The data's primary source was the short story's utterances and sentences. In conducting the research, the researchers employed a descriptive quantitative design where the primary data was in the form of percentages of personal deixis that appeared in the short story, followed by their interpretation. From the analysis, there found 231 personal deixes in the short story consisting of 43 first-person deixes (18,61%), 14 second-person deixis (6,06%), and 174 third-person deixes (75,32%). Referring to these results, it was interpreted that the author of the Gift of the Magi told the story from his point of view to bring the readers to objectively understand the characters, conflicts, and ideas of the story. The author also would like to project his identity as he knows the whole story and the characterization of each character, including thoughts, feelings, and opinions. By having so, the readers get much help in grabbing the essence of the story completely. In short, understanding the role of personal deixis in a short story is essential to comprehend the detail of the story.
