Abstract

This study aimed to investigate whether using Quizlet Live mode in Quizlet Application for ninth-grade students of SMPN 4 SAMBAS affected the students’ vocabulary mastery in procedure text. This study followed pre-experimental study using a pre-test and post-test with a single group design. The sample was IX C class students, consisting of 28 students that were taken through random cluster sampling. The analysis was carried out using both the pre- and post-test data, which were then analyzed using the t-test and effect size formulas. The finding showed that the t-test result was 16,36 and the t-table with a degree of freedom (df) 27 and a significance level of 0.05 was 2.052. This data showed that the t-test was higher than the t-table (16,36˃2.052). It demonstrated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was declined. In addition, the treatment's effect size score was 2.83, which was regarded as a strong effect. Referring to the study's findings, it can be inferred that the utilization of Quizlet's live mode had a considerable effect on the students' vocabulary mastery in procedure text.

Abstract

The adoption of online learning is one indication of increased technological empowerment in education. Teachers apply online learning to achieve learning goals even at a distance. However, the implementation of online learning falls short of educators' expectations. This study aimed to discover the perceptions of eleventh-grade students at SMA Taman Mulia and the challenges they confront during online English language teaching and learning. This study used an online survey to collect the data. From the data, 61% of students negatively perceived online English learning whereas 57% of students agreed that materials become harder to understand during online English language teaching and learning. Meanwhile, students gave positive perceptions regarding assignments and the teacher's explanations. The study also found that most students faced challenges such as incomprehension, lack of vocabulary and fluency, lack of communication, unmotivated, limited time, and low signal and internet quota. Therefore, it is clear that online English language teaching and learning require more focus in terms of both materials’ delivery and students’ challenges, particularly those related to understanding.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate students’ attitudes in writing descriptive text using Internet memes as a writing medium and the reasons leading to the particular attitude that occurred. This qualitative descriptive research was conducted using purposive sampling to a class that consists of 13 fourth semester students of the English Language Education study program at Universitas Tanjungpura in Essay Writing course. There are two types of data collected in this research; they are primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained from the semantic differential questionnaire and the semi-structured interview, which was conducted to five of the students, whereas the secondary data were acquired from students’ writing scores of the Internet memes descriptive writing task. The findings reported that students have a positive attitude towards the task of writing descriptive text using Internet memes. Factors that influenced their positive attitude are the sense of enjoyment and casual feeling from the task, the sense of freedom and relatedness from their chosen memes, and the visual aid from the pictures that helps illustrate better description and helps them understand how to describe better in words. From the result, it is clear that the Internet memes pictures are helpful to boost their attitudes in writing descriptive text. It is suggested that by using fun writing media, such as Internet memes, writing teachers can put students in a comfortable learning atmosphere, so that they can absorb other important learning materials better.

The sample of this research was the students of grade eleventh of MA Raudhatul Ulum Kubu Raya in the academic year of 2022/2023, which consisted of two classes. The total number of students was 30, divided into 15 students for the experimental class and another 15 students for the control class. The researcher used a multiple-choice test to collect the data. The test consisted of two types, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using the t-test formula. To know the normality by utilizing the Chi-Square formula, homogeneity by measuring F-formula, validity and reliability by exerting Kuder Richardson Formula-20 or KR 20. The experimental class was taught by using Berlitz Method while the control class was taught using the method used by the English teacher at that school. The result of the research showed that the value of t-observed was higher than the value of t-table (293>2,16) at the level significance of α =  0,05 and the degree of freedom (df)= 13. The calculation concluded that applying Berlitz Method has a significant effect on students' preposition mastery or in other words the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.
