Abstract

The uptake of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic was indispensable. Classroom activity, including English language learning, was shifted into remote learning. However, remote learning has not escaped the question regarding its role in students' knowledge construction in language learning. Thus, this study explores whether the social construction of knowledge occurs in the same-time synchronous text-based discussion during students' English language learning. It also investigates the phasesin which the social construction of knowledge present. Content analysis of the Interaction Analysis Model was used as the method to classify twenty-three Indonesian English as foreign language students' discourses in the synchronous text-based discussion. The transcripts from two threads in Google Classroom were sorted into the Interaction Analysis Model Phases to find out the percentage of each Phase's occurrence. Results indicate that the discourses showed the social construction of knowledge was developed by students and thereby pointed out the process of their cognitive thinking during their synchronous English language learning. This study suggests that the social construction of knowledge exists in synchronous text-based discussion with the most frequent postings categorized in Phase I.

Abstract

The present study involved one EFL learner who was regarded as successful, not only of understanding second language acquisition theories but also of demonstrating exceptional language skills thus far. An in-depth semi-structured interview was administered with three key objectives – to identify features of language inputs that enable her to develop English skills, to investigate her situation of the learning environment, and to reveal her motivation in learning the language. The participant was a successful EFL learner who was determined by the excellent TOEFL score and performed an outstanding achievement in English proven by the academic transcript. The data were gathered by means of a semi-structured interview and analyzed through the transcription process, coding, and drawing the conclusion. The results indicated that joining an intensive class and integrating English in her daily activities had primarily contributed to her language skill improvement. While the physical environment slightly provided a conducive environment for learning English, her academic environment was steadily supporting her. In addition to the importance of English in her future, the participant was successful in keeping her motivation to learn the language. These findings could contribute to a better understanding of how Indonesian EFL learners successfully acquire a foreign language.

Abstract

The last two decades have been the witness of many studies reporting the disparity between EFL teachers’ beliefs and practices in technology integration around the world. Notwithstanding the enormous studies on EFL teachers’ beliefs and perceptions of digital technology use for language classroom, the literature has still been silent on the relation between Indonesian EFL teachers’ beliefs and practices. The present study thus sheds some light on 15 EFL teachers’ beliefs and practices about digital learning of English in Indonesia. Drawing on data from the written reflections and semi-structured interviews, the findings revealed that these EFL teachers were well equipped with the importance and objective of teaching English by means of digital devices, but appeared hesitant and lacked of preparation in their teaching practices. The semi-structured interview further depicted that their unconfident and lack of preparation was not only a result of inadequate training but also of limited resources and digital facilitation. The institutional supports influenced by environmental readiness also affected their efficacy for digital learning of English. The findings contribute to the realm of English language teaching with regards to offering literature of EFL teachers’ professional development.

Abstract

Twenty-first century English language teaching is the witness of advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Integrating digital technologies in English teaching activities is a prerequisite to enhance learning efficacy and achieve the goal of English communicative competence. Hence, this study examines the impact of flipped learning instruction on pragmatic competence of a group of English for specific purposes students’, i.e. English for Accounting. This pre-experimental study was conducted in ten meetings by involving 36 English for Accounting students of a public university in Surakarta Indonesia as the participants. Drawing on a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), the results portrayed that there was a significant difference between the results of pre-test and post-test on DCT, meaning that the students’ pragmatic competence significantly improved after participating in the flipped learning instruction. An FGD was further conducted to reveal the students’ attitudes about the practice of flipped learning and the results indicated that they positively perceived the implementation of the teaching model in English for Accounting class. These results contribute to offering fruitful insights for teachers and future researchers about the practice of flipped learning instruction in English language teaching, particularly in the context of English for specific purposes.  Keywords: English for Accounting, Flipped Learning, Pragmatic Competence

Abstract

A number of research studies have been conducted to examine the practices and challenges of online English language teaching in the age of Covid-19 pandemic. However, research on the teachers’ insights and suggestions to overcome the challenges of the emergency remote teaching still remains unexplored. The present study shed some light on EFL teachers’ teaching activities, challenges, and insights of the emergency remote teaching amidst the global pandemic. The data were obtained from 27 Indonesian EFL teachers (17 female and 10 male) by means of self-written reflection and semi-structured interview. The results revealed that the emergency remote teaching activities were conducted by administering online forum and discussion, integrating social media, and designing interactive exercises. Notwithstanding the facts, the teachers encountered some challenges such as unfamiliarity with digital platforms, inability to provide quick feedbacks, and lack of students’ motivation and engagement during the remote teaching. In responding to the challenges, this study further depicted that joining professional development programs, creating representative lesson plan, and designing interactive online classroom activities could became alternative solution. These results contribute to the realm of English language teaching as fruitful insights and as a ‘wake-up call’ for educational stakeholders in order to enhance the efficacy of online teaching and learning, particularly during the global pandemic.

Abstract

Indonesia has a promising zakat potential; however, the amount of zakat payments is low. The primary objective of this study is to examine what factors influence an individuals intention to pay zakat. This research integrates individual factors, religiosity factors, and demographics factors. About 300 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents in a Muslim-majority area (i.e. Surakarta City), and 223 cases were deemed usable. The data have been analysed using structural equation modelling. This paper finds that attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behaviour control positively affect the intention to pay zakat. Furthermore, religiosity factors and demographic factors also positively affect the intention to pay zakat except for the Islamic education background variable. Theoretically, this study offers a new research model to explain the behaviour of Muzakki in paying zakat. Practically, this study contributes to providing valuable insights for zakat institutions to establish a policy to collect zakat based on individual perspectives.
