Abstract

The shift of language learning from face-to-face classroom interaction to online learning beyond classroom amidst global pandemic of Covid-19 has changed how teachers and students deal with teaching and learning activities. To address the issue, the present study sheds some light on 71 EFL learners’ perception toward digital learning of English beyond classroom and a range of English learning activities in social distancing measures. Drawing on the data from a web-based survey and Focus Group Discussion, the results indicated that the students positively perceived the use of digital technology as a means of language learning amidst the global pandemic. It was also revealed that digital learning of English beyond classroom could potentially be conducted by means of available social networking sites such as Youtube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Google classroom, and Facebook. Some activities using digital learning of English beyond classroom are clearly highlighted. The results of this study contribute to the realm of language teaching in offering some insights for designing beyond classroom activities by augmenting the accessible social networking sites.

Abstract

With the advancement of technology, today’s language teaching and learning are no longer restricted to classroom face-to-face interaction, but it is going beyond a formal classroom. Drawing on this issue, this study sheds some light on the impact of flipped learning instruction on vocabulary acquisition of English learners as a foreign language, their perception of the practices of flipped learning, and their acceptance of the use of the WhatsApp smartphone application to assist the flipped learning activities. An experimental research design was employed by involving 60 EFL learners who were assigned into flipped (N=30) and conventional (N=30) groups. Learners of the flipped group were taught in combined learning activities before the class using WhatsApp and in-class active practices on vocabulary. This study used multiple data collection sources, including pre and post-tests on English vocabulary, a self-report survey, and a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire. The results demonstrated that the EFL learners in the flipped group scored higher in the post-test, and significantly outperformed their counterparts in the conventional group. Moreover, the results of the self-report survey showed that the EFL learners were at a positive perception of the flipped learning environment to study English vocabulary. Furthermore, finding on the TAM questionnaire portrayed that the EFL learners acknowledged WhatsApp as a satisfactory digital platform to assist the activities of English learning through flipped classrooms. This study offers insights for teachers and curriculum developers to begin acknowledging the promising role of digital learning of English beyond the classroom.

Abstract

The present study examines the issue of women’s internal struggle in response to patriarchal culture and gender inequality portrayed in Tri Utami’s novel entitled Dunia Padmini. Drawing on textual analysis, this study describes empirical facts and evidence related to gender inequality in the novel. The analysis results demonstrate that the financial dependence and subordination of women are forms of gender inequality. This is also supported by social constructions that give negative stereotypes to the role of women as second-class citizens. This construction has not changed much even when women have juggled dual roles (domestic and public). The results of this study contribute to literature enrichment regarding the issue of gender equality based on socio-feminism theory, particularly on strengthening the roles and rights of women in social life, and how they get their rights in society.

Abstract

This study casts the light on the effect of WhatsApp-based flipped learning on students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS). This study was experimental research involving 68 university students majoring in Islamic education at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta Indonesia who were divided into experimental group (N=34) and control group (N=34). A set of pre- and post-tests were used to measure the students’ HOTS. The data were analyzed through an independent sample t-test using SPSS version 24. The results showed that the students of experimental group successfully outperformed their counterparts in the post-test (p-value 0.000 < 0.05). Also, the result of independent t-test revealed a significant difference between the scores of pre- and post-test of the experimental students. WhatsApp-based flipped learning is a promising model for enhancing the students’ HOTS, as well as improving the efficacy of teaching-learning process. These results provide fruitful insights for higher educational stakeholders (teachers, students, and policymakers) to begin acknowledging flipped classroom model as an alternative approach for teaching in university level.

Abstract

This study sheds light on the delineation of the most frequently used request strategies as realized by Indonesian EFL learners and their reasons of utilizing such strategies. A descriptive qualitative study was employed by involving forty (40) English learners of a university at Surakarta as the participants. The data were gathered by means of DCT-questionnaire, Role-plays, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The obtained data were descriptively analyzed by referring to Blum-Kulka and Olshtain’s Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP) followed by transcribing the result of FGD. The findings illustrated that Indonesian EFL learners made use of conventionally indirect request more frequently than other strategies. Furthermore, the FGD revealed that their reasons of employing conventionally indirect strategy were because of the cultural factors and the social distance between the interlocutors. As an effort to equip EFL learners with adequate pragmatic competence, this study offers some input enhancement both in terms of process (teaching activities) and in terms of product (realizing speech act of requests) for ELT practices in Indonesian context.

Abstract

The increasing diversity of modern humans has implications for changes in consumer behavior. Previously, consumers solely relied on logical considerations when selecting products or services, but now this framework has been shifted to encompass broader considerations. This trend forces a shift in the marketing paradigm; from rational marketing to emotional marketing, even continuing to spiritual marketing. This article seeks to examine the implementation of spiritual marketing to increase the sales turnover of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, with a case study of “Komunitas Bubur Sedekah” in Setabelan Banjarsari, Surakarta. This case study applied Hermawan Kertajaya's spiritual marketing theory as a theoretical framework. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. In-depth interviews were held with advisors, porridge sellers, almsgivers, and customers. Observations were conducted to capture data from the porridge business activities. Meanwhile, documentation was utilized to collect data from various social media platforms belonging to the community. The findings of the study indicate that “Bubur Sedekah” is a manifestation of spiritual marketing because it is grounded in ethical spiritual principles, such as theistic, humanistic, and contextual values that bring satisfaction to customers, thus resulting in regular donations. Consequently, the sales turnover of “Bubur Sedekah” has considerably increased, and the sustainability of their business is now assured.

Abstract

Critical thinking and writing are considered as one of the twenty-first century skills that must be acquired by students; however, research on this area still needs more empirical paucity of evidence. The present study aims to reveal English students’ learning needs on critical writing course at university level. Drawing on survey research, this study invites 437 undergraduate students majoring in English department from four universities in Surakarta municipality, Indonesia. Statistical analysis identifies key student priorities: acquiring, evaluating, and synthesizing information; effective communication; articulating their opinions; publishing their writings; and presenting materials at international forums. The data also reveal that English students encounter significant challenges in critically analyzing information and drawing conclusions from reading passages. Regarding their expectations for critical writing instruction, students aspire to enhance both their critical thinking and academic writing abilities. This is particularly pertinent for pre-service teachers who will need to teach content and produce both academic and non-academic publications. Additionally, the survey indicates a positive student response to incorporating technology (e.g., social media, networking sites, websites) into collaborative learning activities for critical writing courses. These findings provide valuable insights into the needs and expectations of English students regarding critical writing courses, offering a clear direction for course design and instructional strategies.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic brings changes in many aspects of peoples’ lives throughout the world. The spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia affects the education system in this country. Face-to-face instructions are shifted into full online learnings from home. Despite this quite drastic change, the literature on students’ insights of this matter has still been silent. Thus, the present study elucidates 45 EFL students’ challenges, suggestions and needed materials during these online classes. Rely on qualitative data analysis from written responses and semi-structured interviews, the findings disclosed that these EFL students’ main challenges in attending online courses were the unsteady networks and the less direct interactions. These students mainly suggested the use of video conferencing applications such as zoom or Google meet, though some students chose assignments over those applications. The students also mentioned that they basically needed grammar related materials within the online classes. The findings bring forward the picture of full online learning condition during Covid-19 outbreak on EFL setting in Indonesia.
