Critical thinking and writing are considered as one of the twenty-first century skills that must be acquired by students; however, research on this area still needs more empirical paucity of evidence. The present study aims to reveal English students’ learning needs on critical writing course at university level. Drawing on survey research, this study invites 437 undergraduate students majoring in English department from four universities in Surakarta municipality, Indonesia. Statistical analysis identifies key student priorities: acquiring, evaluating, and synthesizing information; effective communication; articulating their opinions; publishing their writings; and presenting materials at international forums. The data also reveal that English students encounter significant challenges in critically analyzing information and drawing conclusions from reading passages. Regarding their expectations for critical writing instruction, students aspire to enhance both their critical thinking and academic writing abilities. This is particularly pertinent for pre-service teachers who will need to teach content and produce both academic and non-academic publications. Additionally, the survey indicates a positive student response to incorporating technology (e.g., social media, networking sites, websites) into collaborative learning activities for critical writing courses. These findings provide valuable insights into the needs and expectations of English students regarding critical writing courses, offering a clear direction for course design and instructional strategies.

Covid-19 pandemic brings changes in many aspects of peoples’ lives throughout the world. The spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia affects the education system in this country. Face-to-face instructions are shifted into full online learnings from home. Despite this quite drastic change, the literature on students’ insights of this matter has still been silent. Thus, the present study elucidates 45 EFL students’ challenges, suggestions and needed materials during these online classes. Rely on qualitative data analysis from written responses and semi-structured interviews, the findings disclosed that these EFL students’ main challenges in attending online courses were the unsteady networks and the less direct interactions. These students mainly suggested the use of video conferencing applications such as zoom or Google meet, though some students chose assignments over those applications. The students also mentioned that they basically needed grammar related materials within the online classes. The findings bring forward the picture of full online learning condition during Covid-19 outbreak on EFL setting in Indonesia.

This paper aims to provide information that pragmatic strategies is needed to offer university campaign. It is related to applied linguistics that make brand of universities known by many people. There are theory namely Ethos, Pathos and Logos that need to implement advertiser to make attention and awareness of the target audience. The results of this research can also help stakeholders determine the promotion and branding strategy of the institution such as higher education. A great university may not be known to many people, or it may only be known by certain people. Small universities could be even worse. This research is a marketing trial using google ads to increase the number of new student registrants at a State Islamic University (UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta). Promotion technique is adopted the Aristotle’s rhetoric namely trend consideration (Ethos), fundamental consideration (Pathos) and technical consideration (logos). All of these techniques use a pragmatic strategy approach where the advertiser does not invite the target audience directly, but the university and the target audience are brought together based on core of supply and demand. If compared to the previous year, there will be a 41% increase in registrants in 2021. This strategy has a significant impact and is very influential. A metadata analysis was chosen because this research studied deeply three sources of statistical data including keywords trends, enrolment statistics and a campaign statistic.

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic and government policy to carry out online learning, the present research is aimed at investigating how EFL teachers carry out online EFL learning and its challenges. 16 EFL teachers volunteered to participate in this research through invitation. The EFL teachers were requested to make written reflections regarding their practices in carrying out online EFL learning and the challenges they encounter. Five of them were involved in a follow-up interview individually. Semi-structured interview was administered. Data coding was done and appropriate extracts were informed in results section. To validate the data, data coding was done independently by both researchers, continued by several cycles of discussion. As results, the EFL teachers have carried out online learning through a series of activities ranging from checking the students’ attendance to giving score on the students’ works synchronously or asynchronously depending on each school policy. Various applications and platforms ranging from learning management system to additional resource are employed. However, many problems emerge from the students, the teachers, and the students’ parents along with the valid reasons. Therefore, the online learning does not run well since it lacks of preparation and planning. Implications for better online learning are discussed. Future prospective researches are directed and encouraged. Keywords: COVID-19, EFL teachers, online EFL learning, technology enhanced language learning, technology in language learning.

Physical training is a key element in improving individual military capabilities to ensure the TNI's operational task readiness. With the heavy physical and mental demands of many military operations, it is important to ensure that physical training programs are designed and implemented effectively. This research aims to evaluate the effect of physical training on individual military abilities. The method used was quantitative involving 50 respondents from various military units. The research instrument includes a questionnaire which was tested for validity and reliability. The validity test results show that all question items are valid, with an item-total correlation value between 0.68 to 0.85, and a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.87 for the physical training development variable and 0.82 for individual military ability, indicating high reliability. Linear regression analysis produces a non-standardized regression coefficient of 0.45 and a Beta of 0.60, with a t value of 4.50 and a significance of 0.000, indicating a significant influence of physical training on military capability. The regression coefficient test also revealed an F value of 20.00 with a p-value of 0.000, confirming the significance of the overall regression model. These findings indicate that physical training training programs significantly increase soldiers' endurance, strength, and mental readiness, supporting their effectiveness in carrying out military duties.

The systematic analysis scrutinizes the psychoanalytic feminist of Nyai Ontosoroh character (a gundik- a woman who lives in a non-legal marriage with a man) as portrayed in This Earth of Mankindnovel by an Indonesian famous and influential literary figure, Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Drawing on inferential content analysis, this research depicted the psychological conflicts in the form of id, ego, and superego experienced by Nyai Ontosoroh. It was revealed that Nyai Ontosoroh's primary desires (id) centered on achieving personal freedom and independence and regaining custody of her daughter. However, she had undergone resistance from the Colonialism law (superego), which deemed her ineligible for custody and any inheritance from her former husband due to her status as a "gundik", not legally married to him. To reach a compromise, Nyai Ontosoroh took conscious and strategic steps (ego) to fight for her rights, such as marrying her daughter to a man she loved, attaining financial independence, and fighting against colonialism laws to regain custody of her daughter. This study's findings provide valuable insights for feminist activists looking to promote gender equality, as demonstrated through the character of Nyai Ontosoroh.
