Abstract

This article analyzes the foundational framework of Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas's educational thought as a critical response to contemporary Islamic education's epistemological and moral crises. Al-Attas highlights the centrality of ta’dib as the essence of Islamic education, encompassing the internalization of Islamic values and ethics to shape individuals with adab and wisdom. His concept of the Islamization of knowledge serves as a strategic approach to filter Western secular influences in educational paradigms. This study employs a qualitative-conceptual approach through literature analysis of Al-Attas’s major works. The findings reveal that Al-Attas's thought is highly relevant for reconstructing a holistic, value-oriented, and spiritually grounded Islamic education system. This article contributes to developing an authentic and contextual philosophy of Islamic education amid the challenges of globalization.

Abstract

Essentialism is a school of educational philosophy that emphasizes the importance of core values in the educational process. This school emerged as a response to progressivism, which was considered too flexible and less stable. From an Islamic perspective, essentialist education has a strong relevance because it emphasizes the inheritance of noble values, discipline, and stability in learning. Islamic education itself is based on the Qur'an and Hadith, which emphasize the importance of science as well as moral and spiritual character building. This research uses the literature review method to analyze the relationship between the concept of essentialism and Islamic education. The results show that the principles of essentialism can be applied in Islamic education by balancing religious and general sciences. The curriculum must be designed to produce students who are not only academically intelligent, but also have good morals and are able to face the challenges of the times. The role of teachers is very important in guiding students to understand knowledge deeply and apply it in life. Thus, the integration of essential education in Islamic education can produce individuals who are knowledgeable, noble, and ready to contribute to society.

Abstract

Higher education, as the continuation and culmination of the formal education process, has a role and responsibility to optimize character building based on the nation’s philosophy, namely Pancasila. Indonesia today is far from Pancasila’s hopes. This article explored the landscape of internalizing the nation’s philosophical values through exposure to concepts, practices, and challenges at UIN Ar-Raniry. This research used qualitative methods with a naturalistic approach carried out at Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The sample in this study was taken using a non-probability sampling technique. Meanwhile, data collection was carried out using triangulation techniques. The data were analyzed using inductive analysis techniques with an interactive qualitative approach, comprising data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The research results showed that the process of internalizing the nation’s philosophical values at UIN Ar-Raniry was integrated with the tri-dharma of higher education. The values that were built included fundamental, instrumental, and practical values, which were crystallized into five basic character values: religion, nationalism, independence, mutual cooperation, and integrity. Additionally, the university strengthened character through religious moderation activities, Ma’had al-Jami’ah, and other activities supporting student character building, as evidenced by certificates that were integrated with the academic system through a Diploma Accompanying Certificate, also known as SKPI.

The findings reveal that Al-Abrasyi’s educational vision places moral and character formation at the heart of Islamic education, transcending mere cognitive development. His model emphasizes the unity of religious and secular knowledge, the role of teachers as moral exemplars, and the holistic formation of students. Notably, this study highlights Al-Abrasyi’s practical educational strategy that combines classical Islamic values with progressive methodschallenging the dominant secular paradigm. The research contributes to Islamic educational theory by reaffirming the urgency of value-based curricula and offers a practical framework for reforming education in response to contemporary moral crises. Al-Abrasyi's vision remains a compelling model for cultivating spiritually grounded, socially responsible, and intellectually capable individuals (insan kamil).

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of fitrah according to Ibn Khaldun and compares it with three theories of human development in educational psychology: Nativism, Empiricism, and Convergence. In Ibn Khaldun's view, humans are created with basic potentials that allow them to develop through education and social interaction. This potential, or fitrah, includes the ability to think, learn and build civilizations.Nativism emphasizes that human development is entirely determined by innate factors, while Empiricism holds the view that humans are born without any special potential and develop entirely from experience. Convergence combines both approaches.Through a qualitative approach and a literature study of Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddimah and educational psychology sources, this article shows that Ibn Khaldun's views are most in line with Convergence theory. He recognizes the existence of basic human potential (fitrah) as well as the importance of education and environment in actualizing this potential. With this analysis, this paper provides a cross-cultural understanding of human nature and opens a space for dialogue between classical Islamic thought and modern psychology

Abstract

Background: The responsibility of scientists holds deep significance in the Islamic worldview, where responsibility is seen as human awareness of one's behavior and actions, whether intentional or not. Within this framework, Muslim scientists bear a broader moral and spiritual obligation beyond their professional duties. Objective: This study aims to explore and synthesize the concept of scientific responsibility from an Islamic perspective, highlighting how religious teachings shape the ethical and social obligations of Muslim scientists. Method: The study adopts a qualitative approach through thematic analysis of classical Islamic texts, scholarly interpretations, and the views of contemporary Islamic scholars, particularly focusing on the framework proposed by Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi. Result: The findings indicate that the responsibility of a Muslim scientist includes seven core elements: preserving knowledge, pursuing its depth and essence, applying it in practice, teaching it, publishing and disseminating it, preparing future generations, and dedicating all knowledge and actions to Allah alone. These elements reflect an integrated responsibility that binds scientific endeavor with religious and ethical accountability. Conclusion: The responsibilities of Muslim scientists go beyond secular academic standards, calling for the integration of faith, knowledge, and moral responsibility as a way to uphold the Islamic mission of mercy to all creation (rahmatan lil ‘alamin). Contribution: This study contributes to the discourse on Islamic ethics in science by offering a synthesized framework of responsibilities grounded in Islamic teachings. It provides guidance for Muslim scholars and educators in shaping a science that is both spiritually conscious and socially responsible.

Abstract

This article explores the principles of Islamic education developed by Imam Al-Zarnuji in his book Ta‘lim al-Muta‘allim, as well as their relevance to modern educational practices. Using a literature review method with a qualitative approach, this study analyzes key principles such as sincerity of intention in seeking knowledge, respect for teachers, the importance of patience, applying knowledge, choosing beneficial knowledge, and the emphasis on manners and discipline in learning. Al-Zarnuji also outlines the characteristics of an ideal teacher, which include being knowledgeable (ʿālim), pious (wara’), authoritative, patient, and compassionate. The findings show that the educational principles in Ta‘lim al-Muta‘allim remain relevant in shaping holistic, value-oriented learning and in supporting the development of student character amid global challenges and the digital era. Al-Zarnuji’s educational values have the potential to serve as a strong ethical and philosophical framework for designing meaningful, civilized, and character-oriented educational systems.
