Abstract

The empowerment of village communities is within the framework of the Independent Campus Learning Program (MBKM) Building Villages, which is carried out for the people of Sungai Batu Gantih Village, Gunung Kerinci District, Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province. Based on the results of a preliminary survey in Sungai Batu Gantih Village, in general, the village community carries out their livestock business part-time, with food crop farming activities as the main business. The knowledge of the people of Sungai Batu Gantih Village regarding the cultivation of free-range chickens is still low. Chicken rearing is carried out extensively, relying on household leftovers as feed, resulting in low productivity and a limited population. So, this activity aims to improve the abilities and skills of village communities in raising chickens through socializing the joper chicken so that they can increase productivity and increase people's income in Sungai Batu Gantih Village. Joper chickens are the result of crossing male Joper chickens and female purebred chickens with quite high egg production, and the eggs and meat have a distinctive taste. This activity will be carried out in September–December 2022. The method of activity carried out is participatory community empowerment, which includes counseling, field practice, and mentoring. The implementation of empowerment activities went well and received a positive response from the village community. This was shown by the percentage of Joper chickens that lived to 4 weeks of age, reaching 90% with a body weight ranging from 230 to 290 g/head.

Abstract

This activity aimed to empower the Saiyo Sakato livestock group in Nagari Kambang Barat, Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan, by optimising the management of Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) chicken with local feed innovation and simpler hatching technology. The main focus was on developing local feed innovation and applying more straightforward hatching technology. The methods used included extension, training, and intensive assistance, with the livestock group being guided in creating a feed formula and demonstrating how to make an egg incubator. The results of this service showed that applying a feed formula containing local feed ingredients such as rice bran, corn, soybean meal, and fish meal could increase the productivity of KUB chickens, significantly reduce feed costs, and replace the use of commercial feed. Furthermore, the creation of egg incubators by members of the livestock group could increase hatching efficiency and contribute to the sustainable increase of the KUB chicken population in Nagari Kambang Barat. In addition, this activity also successfully enhanced the knowledge and skills of the group members in the more professional maintenance of KUB chickens, especially in making local feed formulations and hatching techniques. The high enthusiasm of the group members was evident through their active participation in each training session, the application of the knowledge gained during the activities, and their implementation in the field. The conclusion from this service activity is the increased capacity of the Saiyo Sakato livestock group in the management of KUB chicken maintenance, which not only enhances productivity and efficiency but also supports the sustainability of livestock businesses in the area through the utilisation of local resources and technological innovation. This activity provides a replicable model for empowering livestock groups in other areas with similar conditions.

Abstract

This program was implemented in the Serumpun Livestock Group at Sungai Nipah Beach, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province. The activity aimed to introduce the processing method of brown seaweed (Turbinaria murayana) before its incorporation into the diet of the Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan chicken (KUB). The methods employed included educational outreach, demonstrations, and hands-on training sessions. The outreach component covered the potential of Turbinaria murayana as an alternative feed ingredient and the processing stages from harvesting to ready-to-use feed. The training sessions demonstrated processing techniques, including freshwater soaking, sun-drying, and mechanical grinding. This activity was attended by 20 participants from the livestock group, consisting of 15 women and five men. The results showed an 85% improvement in participants' knowledge and skills in utilizing and processing Turbinaria murayana as a feed ingredient for KUB chickens. Farmers gained a better understanding of the nutritional content and potential of Turbinaria murayana, as well as effective processing methods to optimize its use in feed formulations. In conclusion, the program successfully enhanced farmers' understanding and practical skills in utilizing Turbinaria murayana seaweed as a feed ingredient for KUB chickens. It also reduced feed costs and supported the development of poultry feeds that were more economical than conventional ingredients such as ground corn, rice bran, and fish meal.

Abstract

Rising feed costs and the growing need for sustainable feed resources highlight the importance of utilising locally available ingredients such as seaweed and rejected fish. This community service program aimed to enhance the capacity of the Saiyo Sakato Farmer Group through the innovative use of feed containing Turbinaria murayana seaweed and rejected fish meal, thereby improving the productivity of KUB chickens and reducing feeding costs. The program was implemented in the Saiyo Sakato Farmer Group, Nagari Kambang Barat, Pesisir Selatan Regency, through a series of counselling sessions, hands-on training, and continuous mentoring. The activities included education on KUB chicken management, training on the production of rejected-fish meal, and formulation of rations containing Turbinaria murayana seaweed meal and rejected-fish meal. The results showed significant improvements in the knowledge and skills of group members in utilising Turbinaria murayana and rejected fish as feed ingredients for KUB chickens. The program successfully strengthened farmers’ competencies in adopting low-cost local feed resources, which were more economical than commercial feed, costing only IDR 6,400–7,200 per kilogram. The use of this alternative feed resulted in a 40–46% reduction in feeding costs compared to commercial feed. It improved the productive performance of KUB chickens, achieving an average body weight of 500 g per bird at four weeks of age, a weight gain of 465 g per bird, and 0% mortality.
