Abstract

The use of technology can help students' current writing activities inside and outside the classroom. However, based on previous studies, there is still conflicting debate whether technology can help or hinder students in writing. As a result, some developed countries such as Australia and Sweden are de-emphasizing the excessive use of technology in academic settings and are turning back to printed books and texts to get students used to writing manually by hand. In this case, this study investigates deeply manual writing instruction using doodle diaries via paper and pencil in writing classes then how to correlates to their motivation. However, university students as participants in this study were not prohibited from using technology. Through mixed methods study, it was seen that some students were still looking for a technology assistant to help with their writing in their weekly doodle diary. Nevertheless, it was also shown that students have a positive view of this instruction and there is a significant improvement in their writing skills. On the other hand, this study also found that students' writing scores did not correlate significantly with their writing motivation. To obtain these findings, survey through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation along with inferential statistics and descriptive statistical techniques were employed. These findings also implicated that such manual writing instruction can still be employed in this technological era, but other aspect than writing motivation also need to be considered.

Abstract

Academic writing often features complex language, with nominalization of a process where verbs and adjectives are turned into nouns, being a key characteristic. This study investigates the use of nominalization in academic abstracts to understand how this feature contributes to the density and formality of academic language. The research analyzes eight academic abstracts using both qualitative and quantitative methods through manual identification and categorization of nominalized forms. The findings reveal a high frequency of nominalization, indicating its significant role in shaping abstract structure and conveying complex ideas concisely. This suggests that nominalization is a vital tool for achieving the linguistic goals of academic writing, particularly in summarizing research effectively.

English language skills are expected to help children in the future to be able to interact globally and make it easier for them to establish relationships widely. One of the concerns in learning English is to build vocabulary in children through fun activities so that children do not feel that learning English is too boring and difficult. This study used quantitative methods through pre-experimental design that utilizes pre-test and post-test to a group of students to determine their progress before and after being given treatment. Using the test would make an appropriate and accurate comparison to find out the improvement that occurs to students. The data collection technique was carried out by classroom observation at one of the Kindergartens that had compulsory English extracurricular. With the results in the post-test, the findings of this study were that early childhood children could have significant results after being given treatment. There were even children who can answer almost all the vocabulary in the ten designated objects. In addition, based on the responses of students who took part in the lesson they reveled this method with a thumbs up sign and a smile shown to the teacher. So it can be concluded that the motion and song method can be suitable methods for early childhood to introduce English.

Abstract

Classroom debates serve as a pedagogical tool to enhance students' critical thinking skills. This study investigates classroom debate and case studies as tools to augment students' critical thinking abilities. There are still many students whose critical thinking is still lacking in daily life and in supporting their education. With this debate class, students can improve their critical thinking because they are faced with a case study that students must solve. It explores the significance of critical thinking in education and classroom debates' role in fostering critical thinking, oral communication, and independent learning. The research conducted for this study employed descriptive qualitative research methods to investigate the impact of classroom debates on students' critical thinking skills. Participants came from Tidar University students who had previously attended debate classes in the 3rd and 4th semesters. The sample we processed the data from was 31 participants. The findings indicate that the debate sessions have substantially improved students' thinking abilities, as demonstrated by their enhanced capacity to identify assumptions, evaluate pertinent and coherent evidence, and identify logical fallacies in arguments. Case method in debate class also helps students to support problem-solving skills that can improve their critical thinking ability. Furthermore, this article proposes incorporating case study activities within debates to enhance students' critical thinking skills further, ultimately benefiting them in their academic pursuits.
