Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of social adaptation and social support on culture shock experienced by Nias migrant students at HKBP Nommensen University Medan. The research employs a quantitative method with an explanatory approach. The sample consists of 82 students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS. The results indicate that social adaptation has a significant negative effect on culture shock, meaning that better social adaptation leads to lower levels of culture shock. Social support also has a significant negative effect on culture shock, showing that higher social support reduces culture shock levels. Simultaneously, social adaptation and social support significantly influence culture shock among Nias migrant students. This study is expected to provide insights for migrant students and educational institutions in supporting students' social adaptation processes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of social media use, especially TikTok and Facebook, on youth political participation in the 2024 General Election in Sukandebi Village, Naman Teran District, Karo Regency. Social media has become the main platform for youth to obtain political information, discuss, and express their political preferences. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a causal associative research type. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to 60 respondents consisting of youth in Sukandebi Village. Data analysis was carried out using statistical methods with multiple linear regression tests to determine the effect of TikTok and Facebook on youth political participation. The results showed that the use of TikTok and Facebook had a significant influence on youth political participation. TikTok plays a greater role in increasing youth involvement through interactive and easily accessible political content, while Facebook provides a more in-depth discussion space related to political issues. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 65.4% indicates that the TikTok and Facebook variables are able to explain most of the variability in youth political participation, while the rest is influenced by other factors.

Abstract

The rapid acceleration of digital transformation has changed the business landscape worldwide, but micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in developing regions continue to face structural gaps in digital readiness and inclusion. In Medan, Indonesia, where MSMEs are the backbone of the economy, limited digital adoption and uneven readiness hinder their ability to maintain competitiveness and contribute to inclusive economic growth. This phenomenon highlights the importance of analysing how digital transformation variables interact with innovation processes and collaborative ecosystems to generate sustainable economic outcomes. The objective of this study is to investigate the indirect effects of digital readiness, digital inclusion, and digital transformation on sustainable local economic development through the dual mediation of innovation business models and ecosystem business models. Using an explanatory quantitative design, data were collected from 200 SMEs in Medan that had been involved in digitalisation for at least two years. Structural Equation Modelling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was applied to test the proposed Digital Ecosystem Innovation Model (DEIM). The results show that digital readiness, inclusion, and transformation do not have a direct effect on sustainable economic growth. Instead, their impact becomes significant when mediated by innovation and ecosystem business models. Digital readiness strongly drives innovation, while digital inclusion enhances both innovation and ecosystem collaboration. Furthermore, the ecosystem business model emerges as the strongest predictor of sustainable local economies, highlighting the importance of coordinated value creation among stakeholders. This study concludes that digital transformation should not be viewed as an end goal, but rather as a systemic process requiring business model adaptation and the development of collaborative ecosystems. This research contributes theoretically by expanding the Technology–Organisational Environment (TOE) framework through the DEIM model, integrating readiness, inclusion, and innovation into a holistic approach. Practically, this research provides policy insights to improve the resilience of MSMEs through digital literacy, innovation capacity, and cross-sector collaboration.

This research uses primary data and secondary data collected using the Liskert scale and field observations. The results of the research show that creativity has a direct effect on community welfare, creativity has a direct effect as evidenced by the value (p) = 0.000 < 0.05. Self-efficacy is able to mediate creativity to improve welfare with the result t = 13.15092246 > t table (0.05; 200-4) = 1.972141. Therefore, the first, second and sixth hypotheses in this research can be accepted. Business interests have a direct influence on community welfare. This can be proven by the value (p) = 0.000 < 0.05 while business interest on self-efficacy has no effect with value (p) = 0.34 > 0.05 and self-efficacy is unable to mediate business interest to improve community welfare with calculated t value = -0.93118348 < t table (0.05; 200-4) = 1.982597 then the third hypothesis is accepted while the fourth hypothesis and the seventh hypothesis are rejected.

Abstract

Driven by the scarcity of empirical studies on specific competency determinants in the plantation industry, this study examines the impact of education and training on career advancement at PT. Asam Jawa Medan. Initial observations revealed a mismatch between employees’ educational qualifications and job requirements, as well as inconsistency in the implementation of training programs. Adopting a quantitative design, the study involved 52 respondents selected through purposive sampling, with data collected via structured questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression in SPSS. The results show that both education and training have a positive and significant effect on career development, and that their combined influence explains 50.5% of the variance in employees’ career growth. These findings align with established human resource management theories and confirm that enhancing the quality of education and the effectiveness of training initiatives is critical for supporting career mobility in the plantation sector. The study concludes that organizations should raise recruitment standards, strengthen technical training, and implement transparent promotion systems to better align competencies with career pathways. Theoretically, the research contributes to the human resource management literature on career development, while practically it offers guidance for HR policy refinement and identifies avenues for future research on additional determinants such as work motivation, leadership, and organizational culture.
