Abstract

This research aims to determine the problem of science learning in Junior High School. This research was conducted at the 7 Muaro Jambi  Junior High School in the academic year 2018/2019. The study uses a qualitative approach with the case study type. The subjects of this research were 9 grade students of 7 Muaro Jambi  Junior High School. The research instrument used observation sheets for science learning facilities, student and teacher questionnaire. Data was analyzed in a qualitative descriptively with an interactive analysis models (Huberman and Miles models). The results showed that the application of scientific approaches has not been optimal. The results of this study showed that the application of scientific approaches has not been optimal. Science learning still rarely use multimedia. Teachers rarely invite students to investigation or experiment to find the science concept. Students learn by memorizing the concepts found in the book or described by the teacher. Students have difficulty to explain the application of science concepts related to the phenomenon in daily life.  Students' motivation and interest in science learning are low. Parents lack the attention and guidance of studying science at home to their children. The average time used to learn of  science  outside of the schools is < 2 hours/week. The school has laboratory equipment and science tectbooks are adequate to support the study of science.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a multiple choice science process skills test. This research was a mixed method using sequential exploratory design. The data collection phase was divided into two. The qualitative data collection phase includes the stages of designing a science process skills test (arranging the test objectives, determining the type of process skills to be assessed, making a question grid, writing questions, face validity, and revising the questions). Quantitative data collection includes empirical test questions in schools, analyzing item analysis, revising questions, and assembling questions into tests. The subjects of this study were evaluation experts, material experts and students of SMAN 5 Jambi City as many as 100 people. The collection instrument was in the form of a review sheet/validation test. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively, and quantitative data were analyzed using the ANATES Program. The results of this research are multiple choice science process skills tests. The aspects of science process skills that are measured are observing, identifying variables, predicting, hypothesizing, relationships between variables, communicating, designing investigations, and concluding. Of the 25 items developed, 18 valid questions were obtained. Discrimination indeks on the questions that have been developed is enough 20%, good 16%, and very good 64%. The level of difficulty is easy 8%, medium 80% and difficult 12%. The reliability of the question is 0.93 which is classified as very high.

Abstract

Ethnophysics is a branch of ethnoscience that studies indigenous knowledge to be reconstructed into physical concepts. Indigenous knowledge about the brick-making process was obtained based on experience passed down from generation to generation. This study aims to reconstruct the indigenous knowledge about the brick-making process into scientific knowledge (physics). This study was a descriptive qualitative using an ethnography approach. The subject of this research was three brick craftsmen. The research was conducted in Setiti Village, Muaro Jambi Regency. Observations were carried out to collect data about tools and materials as well as the stages of the brick-making process. Interviews were conducted with brick craftsmen to collect data about the indigenous knowledge of the brick-making process. Indigenous knowledge about making-brick process was analyzed and reconstructed into scientific concepts. The brick-making process consisted of mixing clay, molding, drying in the sun, and burning at high temperatures. The identified physics concepts were a simple machine, pressure, soil, measurement, circular motion, work and energy, temperature, and heat. Indigenous knowledge about making-brick process can be integrated into physics learning at school.
