Abstract

Highlights: Both severe and critical COVID-19 patients primarily presented with hypoxemia. Severe and critical COVID-19 patients differed through their tendencies towards respiratory alkalosis/metabolic acidosis and respiratory acidosis, respectively.   Abstract Introduction: Increased inflammation and immune dysregulation in severe and critical COVID-19 trigger oxygen and acid-base disorders, possibly mitigated by corticosteroids. Variations in arterial blood gas (ABG) parameters and the influence of corticosteroid administration have become a concern for clinicians. This study aimed to uncover significant differences in temporal arterial blood gas parameters between severe and critical COVID-19 cases undergoing corticosteroid treatment. Methods: This case-control study, which adhered to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines, analyzed severe (n=27) and critical (n=41) COVID-19 patients treated in the high care unit (HCU) and the intensive care unit (ICU) of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya, from May to July 2021. Arterial blood gas results were categorized into three evaluations (E1-E3) based on collection days. The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Macintosh version 27.0 was used for statistical analysis, with a p<0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Hypoxemia through PaO2 and P/F ratios was prominent in both groups throughout E1-E3, with differences only in E1 P/F ratios (p=0.003). While SaO2 stayed normal in severe cases, critical cases were low, with differences in E1 (p=0.012) and E3 (p=0.004). Severe cases maintained normal pH, while critical cases tended towards acidemia, notably differing in E1-E3. Both groups had low HCO3 levels, differing only in E2 (p<0.001). Severe and critical groups exhibited low and high PaCO2 trends, respectively, with distinctions in E2 (p<0.001) and E3 (p=0.003). Conclusion: Hypoxemia was prevalent in both groups. Compensated respiratory alkalosis or metabolic acidosis was common in the severe group, while the critical presented with respiratory acidosis.

Abstract

Banana plants are a vital agricultural commodity in Indonesia, but Fusarium wilt disease (Fusarium oxysporum) significantly hampers production. This research aims to improve the quality and resilience of vegetative banana seedlings by selecting superior seedlings and vegetative propagation techniques such as budding, shoot cutting, and tissue culture management. The research used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) factorial with a combination of two factors, namely the addition of IBA and biological agents, with nine treatment combinations and three replications. IBA treatment significantly affected the initial emergence of shoots and leaf area, with the best result from treatment Z2 (IBA concentration of 1.5 g/l). The biological agent factor treatment significantly affected plant height, lower stem diameter, number of leaves, and hypothetical vigor index, with the best value shown by treatment B1. The use of IBA and biological agents can optimize the quality and resilience of vegetative banana seedlings, aiding farmers in enhancing the productivity and quality of agricultural products sustainably.

Abstract

Banana production in Indonesia has decreased due to the lack of availability of healthy seeds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of BAP on the multiplication of two banana varieties (Kepok Manurun and Kepok Unti Sayang) by in vitroculture. This study used a completely randomized design (CDR) in a factorial manner with 2 factors. The first factor was the banana variety (Kepok Manurun and Kepok Unti Sayang), the second factor was the concentration of BAP ZPT (0, 1, 2, 3) with 4 replications where each replication consisted of 4 samples, each bottle was planted with 1 plantlet for a total of 128 bottles. The results showed that the concentration of BAP did not affect the multiplication of two kepok banana varieties in vitro. The BAP concentration of 2 ml/l produced the highest number of shoots of 1,91 shoots, the concentration of BAP of 1 ml/l produced the highest number of leaves of 1,52 leaf, while the concentration of BAP 0 ml/l or without BAP result in the highest plant height of 1,05 cm. While the highest number of roots was found in the BAP treatment of 1 ml/l, the number of root tips, the highest root length was found in the BAP treatment 0 ml/l, while the concentration of BAP 2 ml/l produced the highest number of tillers of 1,39 tillers, and the concentration BAP 1 ml/l resulted in a stem diameter of 3,98 cm

Abstract

Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume.) is a type of tuber plant that is widely available in Indonesia and has tremendous potential and prospects to be developed in Indonesia. Porang is widely exported from Indonesia to several countries. The demand for porang exports continues to increase while the production of porang is still low. In vitro culture is an alternative solution in porang plant propagation to meet the needs of many porang seeds and in a relatively short period of time. Provision of growth regulators in the media can affect the growth of porang. This study aims to obtain information whether there is an interaction between IBA and TDZ in the media, to obtain information on the effect of adding IBA and TDZ with different concentrations on the growth of porang plantlets. This research was conducted using MS medium which was then added with IBA with a concentration of 0.5 ppm, 1 ppm and added PGR TDZ with a concentration of 0.5 ppm, 1 ppm and 1.5 ppm. The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between the emergence of shoots and the time of emergence of leaves from all treatments. The I1T3 treatment (IBA 0.5 ppm + TDZ 1.5 ppm) was the best combination treatment in this study by showing the fastest root emergence time (6 MSI), the highest average number of shoots (7.25 shoots), the average number of shoots the highest number of roots (3.67 roots), the highest average number of leaves (6 strands) and the highest average shoot height (1.33 cm).

Abstract

The main commodity of food crops is rice which has a strategic function, namely as a staple food for the people of Indonesia. Maintaining the health and quality of soil biologically by reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers. Swamp Inbred Paddy (Inpara) are superior varieties of paddy that are well cultivated in swamp land conditions, resistant to immersion, and adaptability to acidic soil conditions. This study investigates the combination of biological and synthetic fertilizers on the growth of flood-tolerant Inpara rice using a strip plot/split block design. The treatments used were 6 combinations of biological fertilizers-synthetic fertilizers and 3 paddy varieties with 3 replications. The results obtained from the analysis of variance then conducted a further test of BNJ to determine the performance of each variable. Correlation test is performed to determine the interactions and relationships between observational variables. Soil analysis is also carried out to determine the mineral content in the soil. The effect of the combination of synthetic and biological fertilizer doses with 3 Inpara paddy varieties interacted significantly on several observational variables resulting in significantly different performance. The combination treatment with 75% synthetic fertilizer and 25% biological fertilizer showed several parameters that were higher than the treatment with 100% synthetic fertilizer so that the use of synthetic fertilizer can be reduced.

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-system autoimmune disorder marked by pathogenic autoantibodies, resulting in considerable morbidity and mortality. Despite existing diverse treatment regimens, the need for more effective therapies persists. Recent advancements include monoclonal antibodies, such as belimumab, which can inhibit receptors tied to SLE’s pathogenesis. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combining belimumab and standard therapy compared to placebo in SLE patients, utilizing as many indicators as possible to comprehensively assess the former's potential. Methods: This study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. A thorough literature search was performed across various databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and grey literature sources such as MedRxiv and BioRxiv. The data underwent statistical analysis, with I²<50% indicating low heterogeneity and p<0.05 denoting statistical significance. Results: The literature search yielded seven records for analysis in this study. All the selected studies were multicenter, phase III/IV, randomized clinical trials published between 2011 and 2019. The selected studies' risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane’s Risk of Bias (RoB) 2 tool. The results indicated that belimumab and standard therapy significantly improved disease activity, reduced flare occurrences—particularly severe flares, lowered corticosteroid dosage, and enhanced key biomarkers compared to placebo. The safety profile was favorable, with significantly minimal side effects, infections, and mortality risks. Conclusion: Belimumab combined with standard therapy demonstrates promising efficacy and safety for SLE treatment, suggesting its potential for broader adoption in clinical practice.   Highlights: 1. This systematic review and meta-analysis provide a thorough and complete analysis of multiple indicators regarding the efficacy and safety of belimumab in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which have never been reviewed before. 2. The findings of this study may lead to broader acceptance and adoption of belimumab as the standard treatment for SLE.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global health problem, affecting over 500 million people worldwide. Understanding its pathophysiology and complications requires suitable animal models. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as a promising model for diabetes research. This review aims to synthesize current research on the use of zebrafish as an experimental model for DM and its microvascular complications, focusing on induction methods, research applications, and observed outcomes. A literature review was conducted to investigate those variables. Zebrafish hyperglycemia can be induced through glucose immersion, overfeeding, chemical agents, and genetic modification. These models have been successfully used to study drug testing, molecular profiling, and diabetic complications. Observed variables included glucose levels, enzyme activity, gene expression, histopathological changes, and behavioral responses. Results demonstrated strong parallels with human diabetic pathology, including vascular alterations, proteinuria, renal apoptosis, and neuropathic dysfunction. Zebrafish provides a strong, cost-effective, and relevant model for diabetes research. Despite limitations such as physiological differences and methodological variability, they offer valuable insights into metabolic dysregulation and complications, while serving as an efficient platform for drug discovery.
