Abstract

Karimun Regency in Riau Islands Province is one of the regencies as a tin producer in Indonesia. This study aims to describe the impact of tin mining activities in Karimun Regency and its integration into science learning. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and literature studies. The research results indicate that tin mining activities on land would create former tin mine pits that have positive and negative impacts. The positive impact is that these former tin mine pits could be a source of income for the community like being a source of water during the dry season and a tourist attraction. While the negative impact is that it could damage the environment and require a relatively long time to recover. Efforts need to be made to utilize these former tin mine pits properly so that they can function properly and they can benefit the community. Therefore, science learning based on the environment of tin mining activities needs to be integrated into the learning process in schools so that later it can increase students' knowledge about the importance of an attitude of protecting the environment and having sustainable environmental awareness.

Abstract

Waste is one of the most common environmental problems, including organic and inorganic waste that is often found around settlements. The Heuleut Landfill in Majalengka Regency, West Java, has a problem of waste accumulation that exceeds its capacity, causing negative impacts on the environment and the health of the local community. The volume of waste is estimated to be more than 100 tonnes per day, with an average of about 0.7 kg of waste per person per day. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting primary data through field observations and interviews, and secondary data through document analysis. The research findings show the significant impacts of the Heuleut landfill management, including soil, water and air pollution, which affect health and agricultural yields. The results of the analysis were used as a supplement to the ecology course. The students' positive response to waste management reflects an increased level of environmental awareness. Waste management through the 3Rs (Reduse, Reuse, Recycle) method, such as the production of briquettes, pulp and compost, as an alternative to environmentally friendly waste management was presented to the students using interactive Flash Player applications to enhance their understanding. In conclusion, better waste management is needed so that Heuleut Landfill does not only function as a final disposal site, but also plays an active role in waste management by applying the principles of the 3R's. This is an important step in maintaining environmental sustainability and the welfare of the local community.

Abstract

The peri-urban area of Semarang City, particularly Pakintelan Village, Gunungpati District, has experienced rapid residential growth over the past decade. However, this growth has not been accompanied by adequate waste management infrastructure, especially for household organic waste. Many residents still dispose of or burn organic waste such as food scraps and vegetables, which negatively impacts the environment and public health. To address this issue, this community service initiative aimed to enhance residents' capacity to process organic waste into environmentally friendly and economically valuable products. The methodology involved in-depth interviews with neighborhood leaders to identify key issues, followed by a literature review to develop educational materials, and concluded with practical training on producing eco-enzyme from household kitchen waste. The program ran smoothly and received enthusiastic participation from the community. Residents showed a strong interest in applying eco-enzyme production in their daily lives. Moving forward, further research is recommended on developing a community-based organic waste management system, as not all residents have the space or time to process waste independently
