Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with multiple representations to enhance students' critical thinking, communication skills and collaboration skills in the digestive system material. The study was Quasi-Experimental using non equivalent control group design, with the subjects being students of classes XI-1, XI-2 and XI-3 at SMA Negeri 14 Semarang, selected through purposive sampling. The independent variable in this study was the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with multiple representations, while the dependent variables were students' critical thinking, communication skills and collaboration skills. The research results showed that Students' critical thinking skills in the experimental class that implemented PBL model with multiple representations were higher (89,97) than the control class (58,8). The improvement  in critical thinking skill of experimental class students had higher N-gain criteria (0.85) than the control class (0.45). Students' oral communication skills in the experimental class that implemented PBL model with multiple representations were higher (81) than the control class (29). Students' written communication skills in the experimental class that implemented PBL model with multiple representations were higher (99) than the control class (83). Students' collaboration skills in the experimental class that implemented PBL model with multiple representations were higher (94) than the control class (60). Based on the result, it can be concluded that the PBL model with multiple representations was effective in improving students’ critical thinking, creativity, communication skills in the digestive system material.

Abstract

The low integration of religious values in Natural Science (IPA) learning and the suboptimal development of metacognitive knowledge among students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) have become issues that require serious attention. Science learning tends to focus on the cognitive aspects of science and separates scientific knowledge from religious values, particularly in the topic of Earth and the Solar System, which actually has a strong connection with religious values. This study aims to develop a Problem Based Learning model integrated with Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Religion (PBL-STEMR) and to analyze its feasibility and effectiveness in improving the religious literacy and metacognitive knowledge of MTs students. This research is a Research and Development (R&D) study that refers to the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The product developed is the PBL-STEMR learning model along with its supporting instructional components. The feasibility of the model was tested through expert validation, while the effectiveness of the model was analyzed based on the measurement results of students’ religious literacy and metacognitive knowledge after the implementation of the model. The results of the study indicate that the PBL-STEMR model is considered feasible for use based on expert evaluations. Furthermore, the implementation of the PBL-STEMR model has been proven to be effective in improving the religious literacy and metacognitive knowledge of MTs students in the topic of Earth and the Solar System. This study concludes that the PBL-STEMR model is a feasible and effective innovative approach for integrating science and religious values while enhancing students’ metacognitive knowledge. It is recommended as an alternative for science learning in MTs to support holistic education, balancing scientific understanding and religious character development.

Abstract

Higher education in the 21st century is expected to produce graduates who are not only intellectually excellent but also possess reflective spirituality, SusNess (SusNess), and CREPs (CREPs). However, science learning practices in universities still tend to focus on cognitive aspects, thus lacking in fostering spiritual reflection, ecological empathy, and sustainable action. This study aims to develop the design of the TABS (TABS) learning model, which integrates the Tadabbur Alam, Biomimicry, and STEAM approaches to cultivate reflective, creative, and sustainability-oriented students. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 63 published scientific articles from 2015–2025 that are relevant to science education and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The findings indicate that integrating Tadabbur Alam, Biomimicry, and STEAM effectively enhances students’ scientific creativity, ecological empathy, and spiritual reflection. These three approaches complement one another in fostering SusNess through value reflection and contextual experiences, as well as developing CREPs (CREPs) through sustainable scientific innovation. The synthesis results in an eight-stage TABS model that combines observation, reflection, innovation, and sustainable action, offering a holistic and contextual science learning framework to strengthen Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education.
