Abstract

Public speaking is an essential communication skill for students in Islamic boarding schools, particularly for supporting religious learning, public preaching, and social participation. However, many students still experience anxiety, limited confidence, and difficulty organizing ideas when speaking before an audience. This study examines the use of role-playing as a holistic learning method to support students’ public speaking development at Riyadlotul Athfal Al-Ghozali Islamic Boarding School. This study employed a qualitative case study design involving 18 students and 3 teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation during public speaking and pesantren learning activities. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with source and technique triangulation applied to enhance credibility. The findings indicate that role-playing provided students with repeated opportunities to practice realistic communication situations. Students showed improvement in confidence, speech organization, audience engagement, eye contact, vocal variation, and body language. Teachers also observed greater student participation, spontaneity, and willingness to speak in front of peers. Role-playing supports public speaking development by integrating cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions of learning. In the pesantren context, this method is relevant because scenarios can be aligned with Islamic values and daily communication practices, such as religious speeches and group discussions. The study suggests that role-playing can be systematically integrated into pesantren-based public speaking instruction, although broader studies are needed to examine its application across different Islamic educational settings.

Abstract

The Kopral Kasemo tradition in Tanon Village, Papar, Kediri, is a local tradition that brings together people from different faiths in a communal prayer ritual to commemorate the heroes of the independence struggle. This research is motivated by the limited research on local traditions as models of culture-based tolerance in a multicultural society. This study aims to analyze the role of the Kopral Kasemo tradition in building tolerance and social harmony between religious communities in Tanon Village. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants included community leaders, village officials, migrants, and native residents of Tanon Village. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the Kopral Kasemo tradition not only serves as a form of respect for heroes but also serves as a medium for social interaction and active tolerance practices among Muslims, Hindus, and Catholics. The values of mutual cooperation, social solidarity, and respect for differences are embodied through community involvement in the entire series of traditions. This research confirms that local culture can be an effective instrument in strengthening social cohesion and building harmony in a multicultural society. These findings contribute to the development of multicultural sociological studies, particularly regarding the role of local traditions in maintaining tolerance and harmony between religious communities.

This study employs a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design, aiming to analyze the effectiveness of innovative training programs for civil servants in Makassar City. The research was conducted in three government agencies: the Makassar City Civil Service and Human Resource Development Agency (BKPSDM), the Education Office, and the Health Office. The population consisted of all civil servants participating in the training programs in 2023 (n = 250). A purposive sampling technique was used, resulting in 50 respondents for the quantitative survey and 12 key informants for in-depth interviews. The data included pre- and post-training competency scores, participant satisfaction questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and training program documents. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and document review. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, percentage, and competency score changes), while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis, involving coding, theme categorization, and interpretation. Data triangulation was applied to ensure the validity and reliability of the findings. This methodology provides a comprehensive understanding of the implementation and impact of innovative training programs on the competencies and performance of civil servants in Makassar City.
