Abstract

Highlights: No relationship between the frequency of fast-food consumption as a risk factor for obesity in elementary school children. This result was based on interviews with students of Rangkah VII Elementary School during their daily life activities and their tendencies. No relationship between the habit of playing gadgets and games as a risk factor for obesity in elementary school children. This result was based on interviews with students of Rangkah VII Elementary School during their daily life activities and their tendencies.   Abstract Introduction: Obesity is defined as the result of excessive fat accumulation caused by an energy imbalance, and it poses significant health risks. The contributing factors to be considered in this instance are the frequent consumption of fast food and reduced physical activity, which result from the increased use of gadgets and games. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the aforementioned factors and the prevalence of obesity among elementary school children. Methods: The heights and weights of 112 participants were measured to calculate their body mass index (BMI). The respondents were interviewed directly about their fast-food consumption habits over a one-week period and their daily use of gadgets and games. This study employed bivariate analysis to examine the relationships between variables in a sample, using the Chi-Square test with odds ratio determination, a 95% confidence interval, and a significance level of 0.05, as implemented in the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29. Results: The chi-square test showed p>0.05, indicating no significant relationship between fast-food consumption or gadget use and obesity in elementary school children. Conclusion: There was no association between the frequency of fast-food consumption and the habit of playing gadgets and games as a risk factor for obesity in elementary school children.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition associated with inadequate nutrition and frequent illnesses during the first 1000 days of life. Diarrhea and helminthic infection were prevalent risk factors for stunting in children under five years of age. In 2017, Bondowoso was being one of the regency exhibiting the elevation rates of stunting. Stunting prevalence in Curahdami District, Bondowoso found up to 70% in 2018. This study aimed  to identify the effect of the community development on maternal knowledge in Curahdami District, Bondowoso about stunting and gastrointestinal disorder. The community development was consisted of educational event and anthropometry measurement. The maternal knowledge was measured using pre and post-test design. Thirty-seven children were measured, and over half exhibited stunting; maternal knowledge considerably improved before and after the educational intervention. In conclusion, the community development through educational sessions has successfully enhanced maternal awareness in Curahdami District, Bondowoso which could become a regular program in the future.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Airway epithelium constitutes the initial structural defense against inhaled allergens, with its integrity primarily maintained through the formation of tight junctions (TJ) consisting of claudins, occludins, and zonula occludens (ZO). Currently, the effects of probiotics on airway TJ remain unclear. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the impact of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IS-10506, a native probiotic from Indonesia, on bronchial epithelial TJ in a mouse model of allergic airway inflammation.METHODS: Twenty-four BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to three groups: negative control, positive control subjected to Dermatophagoides pteryonissinus (Der p) sensitization and challenge, and treatment group exposed to Der p and administered L. plantarum IS-10506 since one week before sensitization up to three weeks after. The expression levels of claudin-18, occludin, and ZO-1 were investigated through immunohistochemistry analysis and quantified based on the immunoreactive score (IRS). RESULTS: The results of this study demonstrated that L. plantarum IS-10506 significantly enhanced the expressions of claudin-18, occludin, and ZO-1 (p<0.05).CONCLUSION: These findings underscore the probiotic's role in fortifying the integrity of airway TJ.KEYWORDS: allergic inflammation, probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, immunology, respiratory system, tight junction, occludin, claudin, zonula occludens

Abstract

Indonesia is currently experiencing a shift in disease trends, this is marked by an increase in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The prevalence of these NCDs is also increasingly observed among younger age groups due to rising risk factors such as overweight and obesity. This study aimed to determining the prevalence of the most common diseases and the health profile of the community in Gili Iyang, Sumenep. The samples included in this study were participant in Airlangga Community Hub 2024 in Gili Iyang Island, Sumenep Regency. There were several services in this community development including anthropometry measurement, physical examination and simple lab test. Data was collected and processed using a data processing application, Microsoft Excel. A total of 114 participant were included in this study, hypertension was the most prevalent disease during the community development program 30.1%, followed by hypercholesterolemia as the second most common condition 28.16%, and myalgia as the third leading cause of illness 17.48%. Urgent need for comprehensive health interventions, including routine screening, early management, and targeted health education programs to address the growing burden of NCDs.

Abstract

Stunting in early life, particularly in the first 1000 days has longterm consequences on children’s physical growth, cognitive performance, and emotional well-being. Adequate parental and community knowledge plays a critical role in enabling early recognition, prevention, and appropriate management of factors contributing to stunting. This study aims to investigate the impact of health education on community knowledge related to stunting. A cross-sectional design was applied involving 24 adult participants (≥ 18 years) from the general public in Teluk Sasah District, Bintan Island using total sampling. The educational intervention was delivered through pamphlet distribution, health talks, and discussions with experts focusing on stunting. Pre and post-test were conducted to assess their understanding about stunting. Data were analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) Software version 16.0, employing the Shapiro-wilk for normality and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to compare scores before and after the interventions. This study demonstrated a significant difference between pre-test and posttest (80.83 ± 9.74 vs 90.83 ± 7.76, p=0.000). Furthermore, the minimum score of post-test and pre-test also improved markedly (60.00 vs 70.00, p=0.000). This study found that the implementation of health education, including pamphlet distribution, classical lectures, and case discussions, effectively enhanced participants’ knowledge about stunting.
