Abstract

Studies on the effectiveness of STEM implementation in Mathematics learning, especially in mathematical creative thinking ability carried out by previous researchers, are interesting to be studied. However, several studies have shown different results that can lead to different interpretations. This study aims to estimate dan examine the effectiveness of STEM on students' mathematical creative thinking ability from the relevant studies. This study analyzed 12 primary studies from various electronic search engines within the year of publication from 2017 to 2022. All primary studies in this research were analyzed using the meta-analysis with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 3.0 (CMA 3.0) software by selecting the formula of Hedge to determine its effect size. The results of this meta-analysis study indicated that the STEM approach was effective for students' mathematical creative thinking abilities with an effect size of 0,935 in the category of high effect. There were differences in the effect size of the STEM approach on students' mathematical creative thinking abilities regarding STEM integration with learning models and educational levels. This means that the type of integration of the STEM approach with the learning model and educational level significantly causes heterogeneity in students' mathematical creative thinking abilities. The results of this study are expected to provide educators with an overview of how STEM can be applied in mathematics learning, especially in improving mathematical creative thinking ability.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of the inquiry learning model on the mathematical problem solving ability of students in Indonesia through meta-analysis. This study analyzed seven primary studies that met the inclusion criteria. The effect size index was calculated using the Hedges g equation and statistical analysis using comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) software. Effect size testing is done by analyzing four characteristics, namely class of study, year of study, and sample size. Based on the results of the analysis using CMA, the inquiry learning model has a moderate effect (0.652) on the overall mathematical problem-solving skills of students. The use of the inquiry learning model is more effectively used in 8th-grade, in the range of 2015-2017 and 2018-2020, the sample size is less than or equal to 30. Thus, it can be seen that the inquiry learning model is useful in improving mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Mathematics is one of the subjects that provides the provision of reasoning needed to become a quality human being. Counting is a very small part of mathematics, but it is very important. This study aims to analyze the difficulties in numeracy of the Marind and Kanum tribal communities in Yanggandur and Wasur Villages, Merauke Regency. The methods used are literature study and observation. The results of the study show that the Marind and Kanum tribes have difficulty calculating operations in large numbers because most of the people's daily lives do not use large numbers of addition and subtraction operations, namely hunting and fishing. The community also has staple foods, namely kumbili and sago, which are obtained from their own villages so that there are no transactions that require large amounts of calculation.

Abstract

Textbooks play a crucial role in the learning process, influencing instructional practices and students' cognitive development. However, some textbooks fail to support students in constructing new knowledge because of a lack of gradual concept progression. Consequently, textbook analysis has become a key focus of educational research. This study analysed a seventh-grade mathematics textbook on integers using the praxeology framework. It examines the material structure and identifies potential learning obstacles to learning. As part of Didactical Design Research (DDR) at the prospective stage, this study adopts an interpretive paradigm and qualitative approach. The praxeology framework, derived from the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), serves as an analytical lens for this study. The researchers conducted an in-depth analysis of praxeological components, including task types, techniques, technologies, and the underlying theories. The findings revealed that the textbook systematically presented integer content but lacked support for epistemic knowledge construction. Additionally, potential didactic and ontogenic obstacles were identified. The findings contribute theoretically by demonstrating the framework’s application to textbook analysis. Practically, it guides the alignment of mathematical tasks with learning goals and reduces the learning obstacles. The results inform policy by emphasising the development of contextually and pedagogically relevant textbooks, rather than direct adaptation.

Abstract

Teachers’ understanding and implementation of mathematical literacy-oriented learning are crucial for enhancing students' mathematical literacy. A growing body of research have been conducted to improve students’ mathematical literacy, particularly focused on studying and understanding students’ obstacle and how to facilitate the issues. On the other hand, there have been limited studies concerned on understanding teachers’ role in promoting students’ mathematical literacy. This study aims to analyze teachers’ perspectives and practices in designing and implementing learning treatments for enhancing students’ mathematical literacy. A qualitative method with a case study is carried out in this research. Subjects in this research consist of 6 mathematics teachers (2 junior high school teachers and 4 senior high school teachers) at Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Data collection techniques in this study were conducted using interviews, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed qualitatively based on the data obtained from the research instruments by reducing data, presenting data, and concluding/ verification. The result of the study indicates that teachers believe their knowledge of mathematical literacy is good and claim to be able to design and implement mathematical literacy-oriented learning well. However, document analysis, observations, and interviews with respondents indicated that teachers’ knowledge and skills to design and implement mathematical literacy-oriented learning still need to be improved. A specific characteristic of teachers’ lack of knowledge and skills in designing and implementing mathematical literacy-oriented learning is discussed in this study.

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as a challenging subject by students, necessitating innovative instructional approaches that enhance conceptual understanding and contextual relevance. The ethnomathematics approach presents a valuable strategy by linking mathematical ideas to cultural practices, thus fostering more meaningful learning. This study focuses on exploring mathematical concepts embedded in the oko mama plaiting craft tradition of the Amanuban community in South Central Timor. Through a qualitative design with an ethnographic method, the research involved direct engagement with three local artisans selected purposively based on their expertise. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and documentation, followed by triangulation to ensure data validity. The analysis uncovered a variety of geometric concepts found in the artisans’ practices. These include two-dimensional shapes such as squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, triangles, trapezoids, and both regular and irregular hexagons and three-dimensional forms such as cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and hexagonal prisms. Mathematical ideas involving perimeter, area, and volume also emerged through the measurement and structuring techniques used in plaiting. The study demonstrates that local cultural practices serve not only as expressions of heritage but also as rich sources of mathematical thinking. Findings highlight the potential of the oko mama craft to serve as a contextual learning resource for geometry education. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering a more comprehensive ethnomathematical analysis compared to earlier studies that focused narrowly on basic geometric forms and calculations.

Abstract

Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) is an essential competency for mathematics teachers, as it significantly influences the effectiveness of student learning. This study examines the implementation of game-based learning in mathematics instruction through the lens of PCK. The research was conducted through observations of a junior high school mathematics teacher in Bandung Regency. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the mathematics learning process using the game-based method, focusing on its alignment with PCK principles. Data were collected through classroom observations and unstructured interviews with both teachers and students. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed for data analysis. The findings reveal the following key points: (1) Teachers do not prepare lesson plans or teaching modules before conducting classroom instruction; (2) Teachers' content knowledge requires reinforcement; (3) The formulation of exercises remains simplistic, lacking a range of difficulty levels (easy, medium, difficult), and does not include higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) questions; and (4) There is insufficient reinforcement when students struggle to recall fundamental concepts, such as fractions.
