Abstract

The study identified research trends in higher-order thinking skills in Mathematics Education in Indonesia, from Design to Data Analysis. The data came from content analysis of math education articles. As of April 2022, mathematics education articles in the Science and Technology Index (SINTA) are used solely. The Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education founded SINTA (http://sinta2.ristekdikti.go.id) to evaluate science and technology. This research shows that qualitative methods, such as theme analysis or grounded theory, can provide insight into student learning, while quantitative methods, such as regression or multivariate analysis, provide statistical analysis of HOTS factors. Recommendations include improving teaching, research, and policymaking on choosing the correct analysis method and institutional support. Diversification and data analysis are essential to improve HOTS research and support Indonesian education development.

Abstract

Understanding and constructing mathematical proofs is fundamental for students in abstract algebra courses. The computational thinking approach can aid the process of compiling mathematical proofs. This study examined the impact of integrating computational thinking components in constructing mathematical proofs. The researcher employed a sequential explanatory approach to ascertain the enhancement of algebraic proof capability based on computational thinking through the t- test. A total of 32 prospective teachers in mathematics education programs were provided with worksheets for seven meetings, which were combined with computational thinking components. Quantitative data were collected from initial and subsequent test instruments. Moreover, three prospective teachers were examined through case studies to investigate their mathematical proof capability using computational thinking components, including decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic thinking. The study's findings indicated that CT intervention enhanced students' logical reasoning, proof-writing abilities, and overall engagement with abstract algebra concepts. The findings illustrate that integrating computational thinking into learning strategies can provide a framework for developing higher-order thinking skills, especially in proving, which are essential for studies in mathematics education programs.

Abstract

Some students find trigonometric ratios challenging. Research on the application of Local Instruction Theory (LIT) in trigonometry is limited, particularly in secondary school understanding of trigonometric ratios. This study aims to develop an LIT for trigonometric ratios using Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). The researcher designed a learning pathway to help students grasp the fundamental concepts of trigonometric ratios. The study employs a research design methodology, developing a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) to improve students' understanding. The development of LIT for Trigonometric Ratios follows three stages: initial design, teaching experiments, and retrospective analysis. Students demonstrated the ability to understand trigonometric ratios through the learning process. The findings suggest that the use of LIT-based instructional materials, incorporating RME principles, significantly enhances students' conceptual understanding of trigonometric ratios in high school. Beberapa siswa menganggap materi perbandingan trigonometri cukup sulit. Siswa mampu membangun pemahaman tentang perbandingan trigonometri selama proses pembelajaran berlangsung. Berdasarkan analisis kualitatif eksperimen pengajaran, penelitian ini berimplikasi pada penguatan Local Instruction Theory (LIT) perbandingan trigonometri dan pengembangan bahan ajar berbasis RME.

Abstract

Indonesian students perform inadequately in the International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Before utilising National Examination (UN) questions as measures of learning accomplishment, evaluating them within the context of a theoretical framework for mathematics education is imperative. They analyse student mathematical proficiency using TIMSS and National Examination questions and apply pedagogic anthropological theory, particularly praxeology. This study employed content analysis as a qualitative research method. An algebraic analysis was conducted using the praxeological technique. This entails evaluating concerns, approaches, and technological and theoretical alternatives (logo block). The results indicate that the TIMSS questions require careful consideration and analytical thinking. In contrast, National Examination questions restrict students' cognitive capacities to acquire knowledge on specific topics. The placement of national test question types will be determined based on analytical data. Indonesian students must enhance their arithmetic scores, which consistently remain low. To promote the growth of a highly skilled labour market, the government must comprehend the intricacies involved. Teachers should customise their classes to align with the individual learning objectives of each student.

Abstract

Maths is one of the most challenging courses for many pupils. Maths is often the most complex subject for many students. Newman's Error Analysis analyses eighth-graders math problems. Assessing higher-order cognitive ability is the primary purpose. This qualitative study was conducted in a Majalengka, West Java, junior high. Five randomly selected kids with different math skills participated. Following up with interviews and testing Bloom's taxonomy's latest HOTS signal questions were the critical data collection approaches. These questions test analytical (C4), evaluative (C5), and creative (C6) skills. Students had to model, sketch, confirm geometric calculations, and calculate dimensions using available components. Newman's Error Analysis was applied to analyse typical misunderstandings and errors. This exercise showed students' geometric reasoning and problem-solving weaknesses. The findings suggest customised teaching methods to improve students' geometric knowledge and performance. Reducing data, presenting facts, and concluding helped us comprehend pupils' cognitive processes and geometric challenges.
