Abstract

The current implementation of character education has not fully succeeded in establishing the character of Indonesian people, especially high school students. The purpose of this study is to develop a holistic model of character education management for high school that can be used to enhance character education implementation in high school in Pemalang Regency. This study employed qualitative approach, starting from the preliminary stage of research and development until the test of feasibility. The variables in this study are: 1) the principal, 2) the vice principal of curriculum, 3) the subject teachers and guidance and counseling staffs, 4) head of administration, 5) parents, and 6) the school committee. The results of preliminary study show that: 1) the implementation of character education in high school in Pemalang Regency is still lacking, 2) The teaching of character education only focuses on the aspects of intellectuality, 3) All components consisting of the principal, vice-principal of curriculum, subject teachers, counseling and guidance, head of the administration, parents, and school committee still implement the character education partially, 4) an alternative solution in the development of a holistic model of character education management in high school in Pemalang Regency is needed. From these results, the lacking of character education is caused by the teachers who only pay attention to the cognitive aspect, and ignore the affective, psychomotor, and spiritual aspects of learners. In fact, students should be fostered intellectually, physically, spiritually, and affectively, involving the integration from the principal, vice principal of curriculum affairs, vice principal of student affairs, subject teachers, counseling staffs, heads of administration, parents and school committees. This is consistent with a holistic model approach.

Besides fulfilling the need for promotion and functional positions, lecturers’ competency improvement also functions to increase their self-existence expected to provide impact in improving the quality of the institution. It is ironical when a leader expects that the institution he/she leads is idolized by its community but he/she has not given maximal career development to its lecturers. Research and Development method aims to produce a guide along with its test for its effectiveness. The result of the preliminary study shows that the mathematics education lecturers in the Distance Learning Program Unit of Semarang (UPBJJ-Semarang) require an opportunity to improve the competence of its lecturers through a further education and training program. It requires motivating and strengthening supervision and regulation. The results of the development show that lecturers need career development, further study, and opportunities to attend various education and training programs that support the improvement of the competence which is relevant to the field of study. As a mathematics education lecturer who has a basic soft skill in logical and systematic mindset, he/she needs to develop so as to be equivalent to the advancement of science. Based on these results, career development can be focused on thinking processes that are classified on the basis of personality types. The improvement of soft skills with the different personality types will provide an effect on the different personal and interpersonal behaviors and will be an important element in the enhancement of the lecturer's performance in mathematics education.

Abstract

The development of science, technology, and arts, as well as the development and social changes of a community, is so rapid. Thus, the challenge of the future education is not easy. Education is a cultural strategy and is not merely a conscious effort. As an educational institution, High School (SMA) has a very strategic role to restore education to the spirit and identity of Indonesia. The principal has a very important role to play in his/her vision and mission, and the school's organizational culture is an essential component of success in his/her leadership. The organizational culture-based “among” system leadership model is considered appropriate to be implemented by the principal. Therefore, it is necessary to further observe the leadership model and value system that is the organizational culture in the school. In general, this study aimed to describe the organizational culture-based “among” system leadership model in five public and private multicultural high schools, and those which are religiously affiliated in the city of Yogyakarta. The five schools include SMA Negeri 3, Taman Madya Tamansiswa High School, SMA PIRI I (Islam), Christian BOPKRI I High School, and Catholic Marsudi Luhur High School, all of which are in Yogyakarta City. This study employed a qualitative approach with data from the natural background as the source of primary data. This study aims to know and simultaneously describe the leadership model of the organizational culture-based “among” system of the schools in Yogyakarta City. The study was designed as a multi-case study model. To be able to understand the meaning of such events and interactions, theoretical orientation and theoretical perspective with a phenomenological approach were employed. Based on the results of the documentary, observation, and interviews studies, this study shows differences between the five high schools although nuances to Indonesia is in fact still reflected in it. The differences can be interpreted as a diversity that is a reflection of the specificity and typicality of the schools concerned. Besides, it was found that the organizational culture was developed on the basis of local wisdom, nationalism, and Islamic faith. It is these factors that affect the leadership pattern of the principals in the schools. The fact shows that the leadership model implemented in the High Schools in Yogyakarta City dominantly refers to government regulation and or foundation one for the private schools; it also has a multicultural nuance based on the local or religious wisdom or a combination of both. It is implemented with the slogans of silih asih, asuh, and asah which are actually the essence of “among” system leadership model. Islamic schools need to go deeper into the wisdom of Rasulullah Muhammad S.A.W's leadership, known as prophetic leadership, to act as worship, to give priority to ministry, instead of asking to be served. The prominent Christian teaching is the spirit of loving that is based on service which needs a profound interpretation that love is giving rather than asking for services. Therefore, the organizational culture-based among system leadership model of the schools that refers to local, national, and religious wisdom is expected to produce an optimal and sustainable performance.
