Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge of residents of Kuala Tolam Village regarding drought control, flood management, peatland ecosystems, and riverbank landslide mitigation in areas vulnerable to hydrometeorological hazards. The education program was conducted through material delivery, discussions, and pre-test and post-test evaluations using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 20 to describe respondent characteristics and to examine knowledge improvement using a paired sample t-test. The results showed that 66.67% of participants were initially in the low knowledge category; however, after the intervention, all participants improved to the moderate and high categories. The mean knowledge score increased from 47.33 to 69.73, with a statistically significant difference (p 0.05). This improvement was supported by the relevance of the materials, including peatland hydrology, drought control, flood mitigation, and riverbank bioengineering. Participatory education is therefore important for strengthening community capacity and village preparedness in managing environmental risks in peatland ecosystems.

Abstract

Leaf pruning is often used to suppress transpiration, but experimental evidence in Eucalyptus suggests that reducing leaf area is not always necessary and can reduce seedling performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of leaf pruning on the survival and early vegetative growth during the seedling phase of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. This study used an experimental approach, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The results showed that the effect of leaf pruning on the growth of Eucalyptus pellita seedlings resulted in good average growth in vegetative growth parameters, such as normal plant life at 21 days after planting (DAP), plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, seedling recovery rate, and root volume. This indicates that the presence of intact leaves plays an important role in supporting the process of photosynthesis, carbohydrate accumulation, and distribution of assimilates to growth organs, thereby increasing seedling vigor. On the other hand, root length and root dry weight did not show any significant effect, due to the presence of a root growth limiting factor, namely the tube, so that the roots could not grow to their maximum length (the roots only surrounded the tube position). The conclusion is that there is an effect of the treatment without leaf shears on the survival success and initial vegetative growth during the nursery phase of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell.

Abstract

Abstract

Acacia crassicarpa is an important species for industrial plantation forestry, but a portion of tissue-cultured plantlets fail to develop functional roots during acclimatization. This study evaluated the effects of leaf type and ex vitro rooting hormone application on growth and physiological responses of non-rooted plantlets. A RCBD was applied with two factors: leaf type (pinnate, phyllode, and pinnate–phyllode) and rooting hormone concentration (0, 500, 1000, and 1500 ppm of IBA and NAA). Parameters observed included stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate, and seedling height. Results showed that leaf type significantly affected stomatal conductance and early seedling height, but had no significant effect on photosynthetic rate or later growth stages. Rooting hormone concentration and its interaction with leaf type were not significant for all parameters. Early seedling performance was primarily influenced by initial leaf type, while growth was largely constrained by the limited root system of non-rooted plantlets rather than hormone application.

Abstract

Oil palm cultivation is generally carried out in monoculture. This has an impact on decreasing soil fertility, one of which is the physical properties of the soil. One of solutions that can be done to overcome this is the cultivation of oil palm plants with an agroforestry system. The purpose of this research was to compare the physical properties of soil agroforestry on oil palm (Elaeis gueneensis Jacq.) and aloes (Aquilaria malacensis Lamk.) with oil palm in monoculture. This research was conducted in Bukit Kemuning Village, Tapung Hulu District, Kampar Regency for 4 months from November – Februari 2020. Determination research the locations for agroforestry system and monoculture system using purposive sampling method. Soil samples were taken from 4 sampling point: palm circle, leaf frond piles, harvest path and aloes circle which were repeated 6 times on each land. The observation parameters are several soil physical properties (topsoil depth, bulk density, particle density, total pore space, moisture content, water holding capacity, permeability, infiltration, and soil resistance) and soil C-organic. Data from the observations of each parameter were analyzed statistically using the t test. The results showed that the agroforestry system increased C-organic content and improved selected soil physical properties (increase topsoil depth, total pore space, moisture content, water holding capacity, permeability, infiltration and decrease bulk density, particle density and soil resistance).
