Abstract

Education tourism is a sustainable activity aimed at reducing environmental impact, protecting ecosystems, promoting economic development, and improving the quality of life of local residents. Edutourism and recreation has important role in socio-economic development and environmental infrastructure. Ngesrepbalong Village is a rural area in Limbangan District, Kendal Regency, Central Java. The diversity of vegetation and the vastness of nature make this area an ideal habitat for various fauna, especially birds. Birdwatching is an edutourism activity that accordance with the potential of this village. Several areas show high potential to be utilized as birdwatching tracks. The research was conducted using the Index Point of Abundance (IPA) method, and the data were analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index and Simpson’s Evenness Index. Based on observations of the tracks in Ngesrepbalong Village, the bird diversity index values from highest to lowest were: Watu Ondo (3.03), Curug (2.80), Gempol (2.62), and Tea plantation (2.09), with an average value of 2.635. These results indicate a medium level of bird species diversity. Therefore, Ngesrepbalong Village has potential to be developed into an ideal destination for birdwatching and edutourism, offering natural beauty and biodiversity supported by a rich variety of vegetation.

Abstract

The Dasawisma (Dawis) “Tulip” Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) Group of RT 13 RW 05 Sukorejo Village need a featured product that can be developed into a pioneering Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME/ UMKM). Ecoprint has the potential to be a featured product because the materials are available around the Dawis environment, such as Yellow trumpet tree (tabebuya), Jamaica cherry (kersen), Mahogany, Tropical almond (ketapang), and Cosmos (kenikir). The leaves and bark of these plants can be used as ecoprint materials and natural dyes. On this basis, two solutions are offered: 1) increasing the knowledge of the Dawis members in developing eco-friendly ecoprint, 2) increasing the skills of the Dawis members in making ecoprint as a pioneer to create a business unit. These can be achieved through the introduction of eco-friendly ecoprint, increasing the capacity of skills through training and mentoring, as well as monitoring and evaluation of ecoprint products as a pioneering business unit. The results of community service show that: 1) increased knowledge of Dasawisma group members about ecoprint, 2) an increase in ecoprint-making skills of Dasawisma Tulip members, 3) produced hijab, pashmina, and clutch products. The outputs achieved are 1) news in electronic mass media, 2) copyright on ecoprint making procedures, 3) publication of activity videos, and 5) journal publications that are in the process of being submitted. This community service activity is in line with SDGs 4 (Quality Education) and SDGs 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

Abstract

Wreathed Hornbill (Rhyticeros undulates) is known to build nests in three cavities where they managed to live and breed. This edifice is predicted to contain various molds needed to maintain micro-environmental steadiness. This study was aimed to identify molds diversity in the Wreathed Hornbill’s nest, using samples collected from empty structure with no bird activity. The samples were obtained from the Kalisidi and Nglimut observation stations on two occasions, i.e., in 2016 and 2017. Furthermore, the samples comprised cover soil, wood and inner material, which were collected aseptically and placed in sterile Ziplock plastic bags. These samples were then diluted in sterilized distilled water to attain 10-3 mg/ mL, and subsequently inoculated on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), Malt Extract Agar (MEA) and Czapek Dox Agar (CDA). The inoculants were incubated at 37 °C, followed by the observation of mold colony after the 11th day. The results identified seven and nine species of molds in the Kalisidi and Nglimut observation stations, respectively. The most abundant species was Penicillium sp. which was found in composted nest materials for the whole observation periods.

Abstract

This study explores high school students’ understanding and attitudes toward environmental conservation grounded in local wisdom as a preliminary step to developing ethnoconservation-based teaching materials. A descriptive quantitative survey was administered to students in coastal and non-coastal areas using a Google Form questionnaire with dichotomous (Yes/No) items. Analysis identified five domains of perception: the importance of integrating local cultural values into science learning, interest in cultural knowledge related to environmental preservation, ability to explain cultural roles in conservation, difficulties in linking ecological concepts with cultural practices, and perceived relevance of local wisdom in science learning. Most students support the integration of local wisdom into science education and express strong interest in learning cultural practices related to conservation. However, many still struggle to conceptually connect scientific concepts with cultural traditions. The study concludes that there is an urgent need for contextualized, culturally responsive teaching approaches that integrate scientific knowledge with local environmental practices to strengthen students’ ecological literacy and multicultural awareness.

Abstract

The designation of the UNNES Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) at Mount Ungaran has brought new opportunities and uncertainties for communities living adjacent to the forest, particularly in Desa Ngesrepbalong, Kendal Regency. Many residents were not fully informed about the change in forest governance, the boundaries of the KHDTK, or their potential roles in its management. This community service program aimed to strengthen local understanding and encourage collaborative engagement in conservation and sustainable utilization of the forest area. The activities were conducted through coordination with local authorities, socialization sessions, field visits, and participatory discussions involving village officials, forest farmer groups, and community representatives. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, and feedback forms to assess changes in knowledge and attitudes. The program found that direct dialogue and joint field supervision of forest boundaries significantly reduced community concerns, particularly among coffee farmers previously involved under the Perhutani scheme. The transition from one-way socialization to participatory collaboration helped build mutual trust and opened pathways for sustainable partnership between the university and local stakeholders. It is recommended that follow-up programs focus on structured community-based forest management schemes, continuous mentoring, and integration of conservation principles into local economic activities to ensure long-term sustainability.
