Abstract

Long-Tailed Macaque or “LTM” (Macaca fascicularis) is one of the internationally traded species and  most of the exported LTM are taken from the wild includng in Indonesia. This massive exploitation may result in extinction. Therefore, regulations to set the LTM export quota are necessary. One of the activities to set this quota is the LTM population survey. Data on LTM population in each area especially Indonesia  is insufficient. Governments, together with stakeholders, begin to estimate the LTM population in the field include in Central Java. The objective of the study was to analyze estimation of the population on LTM in Central Java especially in nine districy/city.Survey of LTM population in Central Java is implemented in nine District/City. , i.e., Semarang District, Magelang District, Temanggung District, Pemalang District, Boyolali District, Karanganyar District, Sukoharjo District, Wonogiri District, and Semarang City. Population data obtained by using the method concentration count. The observation was repeated at least twice at each observation point. The observation units are morning and afternoon (one-time observation). The observation is carried out at 05.30-11.00 (morning) and 15.00-17.00 (afternoon). The Result of tf the research showed total of 811 LTM individuals are encountered during data collection in nine  districts/cities in Central Java. Total survey area in nine districts/cities is 331.07 ha. Kreo Cave, Semarang City, is one of the locations with the highest number of LTM (164  individuals), and the lower number of LTM in Boyolali distric (43 individuals).

Abstract

Traditionally, the genus Philautus Gistel, 1848 contains small Rhacoporid frogs that lack vomerine teeth and a direct development tadpole stage. In Java, this genus consists of 3 species, including Philautus aurifasciatus, Philautus jacobsoni, and Philautus pallidipes. It is known that Philautus aurifasciatus and Philautus jacobsoni are sympatric species from Mount Ungaran and are morphologically difficult to distinguish. Therefore, information is needed through the phenetic characters of each population in the area to identify differences in their morphology. This study aimed to analyze the morphological characteristics of  Bush Frog Philautus spp. on Mount Ungaran in terms of meristic character through a direct field survey and comparison methods. Furthermore, it was conducted by observing 32 specimens of Philautus spp. from Mount Ungaran and compared with the Philautus aurifasciatus from Mount Gede Pangrango with 18 meristic characters. The results showed that Philautus spp. is similar to Philautus aurifasciatus in terms of their meristic characters. The results of the meristic analysis showed that Philautus spp. has a variety of dorsal colors from brown, purple, green, and gray with two types of patterns including patterned groups (resembling letters H, X, and V) and abstract. Furthermore, the throat, stomach, and lower thighs are granular with three snout shapes (protruding, round, and sloping). It has a loreal oblique tympanum and canthus rostralis. The forelimbs are not webbed while the hindlimbs are half webbed, and the inner metatarsal is an elongated oval in shape. Meristic analysis provides a basis for strengthening the taxonomic status of Philautus spp on Mount Ungaran, as well as information the distribution in Mount Ungaran.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure the bird’s diversity at Karangasem Village, Wirosari District, Grobogan Regency mainly at the forest habitat, farm land and it settlements. The study was conducted on September until November 2008 used point count method. The data of birds species and its number analyzed by Shanon-Wiener species diversity index (H’), evenness index (E), dominance index (Di) and similarity index of Jaccardto describe the similar species of birds inter-habitat at Karangasem. The result indicated that there are 43 birds species of 22 families recorded at the location. About eight species among them are protected by the government, two among them included into CITES appendix II and one of them included into Vulnerable category of IUCN Red List. The birds diversity index and evenness index in the village of Karangasem ranges from 1.9 to 2.7 and 0.68 to 0.8. The highest and most dominant species are Collocalia linchi, Pycnonotus aurigaster, Lonchura leucogastroides and Lonchura punctulata. The analysis of Jaccard’s similarity index showed that the forests had more similarity to settlements than rice farming, which means there are high differences between habitats. There are differences in composition, structure, and featured bird species of the habitat, whichcaused low similarity index between the habitat ranges from 19.23% to 25.71%.
