Abstract

College students are in formal operational in period of cognitive development which they can use symbols logically related to abstract concepts, acquire flexibility in thinking as well as the capacities for abstract thinking and mental hypothesis and consider possible alternatives reasoning and problem solving. However, the students’ writings have some mistakes in terms of using surface features such as spelling, grammar, usage, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and tenses. This study aimed to analyze about the students’ cognition and attitude in writing descriptive text. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative by conducting the in-depth interview and questionnaire administration. The data of this study were the sentences in descriptive text and transcript of interview. Moreover, the data source were 2 students of 7th semester at STBA – PIA Medan. The results showed that 1) the dominant type of students’ attitude in writing descriptive text was cognitive domain followed by affective and conative domains which could be interpreted that the students had positive attitude regarding to the writing of descriptive text, 2) the students’ cognition in writing descriptive text was having the stages of writing process which consists of pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing, and 3) the reasons of applying the students’ cognition and attitude in descriptive text were they had the goals and purposes in their thoughts when they were writing. Moreover, they believed that writing could improve their skills in learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of game strategies and storytelling strategies on Indonesian Language lessons on listening skills of Grade VI students of State Elementary School No.118315, Negerilama Plantation. This type of research is a semi-experimental study with a sample of 2 experimental classes, namely 20 students of class VI A and 22 students of class VI B. Class VI A was treated with Game Strategy and Class VI B was treated with Storytelling Strategy. The research instrument used a test consisting of 5 questions in the form of an essay test that has been tested for validity and reliability. After being given treatment to the two experimental classes, the results are (1) There were differences in students' listening skills before and after being given the game strategy treatment in class VI, namely 75.5 and 83.5. (2) There are differences in students' listening skills before and after being given storytelling strategy treatment in class VI, namely 67.8 and 76.6. (3) Listening skills of grade VI students were better at using game strategies than storytelling strategies. This was indicated by the average listening skill of students using game strategy was 83.5 while storytelling strategy were 76.6.

Abstract

The validity and reliability of the test is very important before the test is used to measure student achievement. This study aims to analyze the validity and reliability of the summative English test for fifth grade public elementary schools 058238 Bukit Rata in the academic year 2019/2020, and to investigate the quality level of the summative test of English in elementary schools. This research is a quantitative descriptive study. The subjects in this study were students of grade V public elementary school 058238 Bukit Rata in the academic year 2019/2020. The data analysis technique used is quantitative analysis by testing the validity, reliability, level of difficulty, distinguishing power, and tricking effectiveness. The data obtained were analyzed using the ANATES version 4 program and manual calculations using Microsoft Excel. The results showed that, the level of validity of the English test in grade 5 elementary school before the revision based on material aspects, construct aspects and language aspects obtained a percentage of 73% with a good category. After being revised, based on material aspects, construct aspects and language aspects obtained a percentage of 90% with a good category. The reliability test was carried out twice, namely the questions before expert validation and after expert validation. The results of the reliability test on the first question were the value of -0.084 in the unreliable category because the value was ≤ 0.700. Furthermore, the second test of English test reliability was carried out. The results of the second test reliability test, namely the KR 20 formula with the help of the Excel program obtained a value of 0.413 in the sufficient category. The level of validity and reliability of the English test in grade 5 elementary schools. Before the revision, the number of valid questions was 4 valid questions or 16% of the total questions. Furthermore, the number of questions that can be accepted is 17 questions, but 13 questions are not valid. So it is necessary to improve the overall problem. After the revision was made, the number of valid questions was 16 valid questions or 64% of the total questions. Furthermore, the number of questions that can be used is 15 questions, because one significant question has a low difference power, so the question is not used. The validity and reliability of the English test in fifth grade public elementary school 058238 Bukit Rata should be revised becausereliability is used as an indicator in believing the value of a test because it has consistency. While the test must be valid because it is used as a development and evaluation of a test. In addition, validity is also needed to determine the feasibility of items.

Abstract

Reading to learn (R2L) is developed by D. Rose and J.R. Martin for a teacher to guide students to read and to write a text. R2L model has four stages: preparing for reading, detailed reading, note-making, and joint construction. This article describes the implementation of the R2L model for students to reconstruct a short story in Bahasa Indonesia subject. A teacher and third-year students of Junior High School are involved in the study. The processes of teaching and learning for four meetings are recorded by a video camera. The data are presented for each meeting. The result depicts that by R2L with the inclusion of skimming, scanning, reading preparation, read in detail the students are able to identify the keywords, paraphrase, and reconstruct a new short story.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative research which aims to describe the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum in the learning process in terms of learning planning, learning implementation, and learning evaluation. The population and sample in this study were teachers and students of Public Elementary Schools throughout Labuhanbatu Regency who have implemented the 2013 Curriculum since its inception in 2013, namely SD Negeri 28 Bilah Barat, SD Negeri 01 Bilah Barat, SD Negeri 08 Rantau Selatan, SD Negeri 11 Rantau Selatan, SD Negeri 15 Rantau Utara, and SD Negeri 06 Rantau Utara. The samples in this study were 46 for teacher respondents and 182 for student respondents at SD Negeri Labuhanbatu Regency. The instrument in this study was a semi-open questionnaire containing statement items, and the variable questionnaire was measured using a Likert scale. The results showed that the teacher's understanding of 2013 Curriculum-based learning planning was in the quite good category, with an average percentage of 74.72%. This is evidenced by the teacher's ability to compile a syllabus and lesson plans. The teacher's understanding of the implementation of curriculum-based learning in 2013 is in the good category, with an average percentage value of 76.13%. This can be seen from the teacher's ability in terms of class mastery. The teacher's understanding of the 2013 Curriculum-based learning evaluation is in the quite good category, with an average percentage of 73.5%. This can be proven by the teacher's ability to take an authentic approach. Meanwhile, the students' responses about the implementation of 2013 Curriculum-based learning carried out by the teacher showed a fairly good category, with an average percentage of 72.75%. For students' perceptions about the evaluation or assessment of learning based on the 2013 Curriculum conducted by the teacher, it is in the quite good category, with an average percentage of 73%.

Abstract

This study aims to develop English Reading Material for Grade Eleven of Islamic Students at SMA Nurul Islam Indonesia Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this study were students of class XI IPA consisting of 30 students and one of the English teachers. The instrumentation for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After Analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administrating interview to English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 30 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the Islamic 1 students of XI IPA need English reading materials which contain Islamic content. Thus, developing English reading materials were procedure text. Then the procedure texts related to their background of knowledge. The products have been validated by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4.6 or 92% from English lecturer and 4.4 or 89% from English teacher. It means the developing materials are categorize as relevant or appropriate for grade eleven of Islamic students.Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Islamic students

Abstract

This research has aims to develop English speaking materials for grade X culinary study program at SMKN 10 Medan, first this research was conducted by Research and Development through has Six stages, they are: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by the experts, revising and the last was Final product. The subject in this research was students grade X boga 3 at SMKN 10 Medan where the students consisting of 36 students, the instrumentations for data collection  were giving a questionnaire and interview, questionnaire was administrate and it answer by the students to get the students need, and the interview was administrate to the English teacher, the result of the questionnaire and interview prove that the student need some appropriate speaking material in descriptive text that has relation with their program study, that is culinary. Thus, developing English speaking materials consist of three units: lets’ talk about chef Juna (describing People), how the smell, taste and texture of your favorite food? (Describing things) and the last units was talk about famous restaurant (Describing Place). The product has been validated by two experts, and the average score are 4, 75 are coming from English Lecture’s, the second average score 4, 89 are coming from English teacher. From the score above, it means that the product categorized as relevant for grade X students of culinary study program.Key words: R&D, English for Specific Purposes, English speaking materials, culinary study program.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop E-Scattergories game as a media to teach writing descriptive text for the tenth grade students in SMK Namira Tech Nusantara Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing materials and media, validating, revising, get the product. The subject of the study was tenth grade students and the English teacher in SMK Namira Tech Nusantara Medan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaires to TKJ 1 (Teknik Komputer Jaringan) consisting of 18 students to get the students’ need. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students to neededdigital game as a media. The developed writing materials were validated by two experts with the average scores of 92.66 of 100. It shows that the E-Scattergories game is valid and suitable to be used for the tenth grade students in SMK Namira Tech Nusantara Medan. Abstract

This study deals with the realizations of violation maxims of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series. The objectives of the study were to describe realization of violation maxims used by main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series. This research was conducted by qualitative design. The data were sentences of main characters which were violated. The data source of this research was taken from Keluarga Beti comedy series that was obtained from the video on YouTube. The finding of the data showed eleven realizations of violation maxim of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series as understating, overstating, using tautologies, contradiction, using irony, give hints, give association clues, be ambiguous, overgeneralize, and overstating and be ambiguous. The most dominant realization of violation maxim was being ambiguous. The less dominant realized of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series were understating and give association clues. The absence of the realizations of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series were metaphor, presuppose, and be vague. The researcher also found other realizations were unrelated statement and combination of overstating and be ambiguous. Keywords:Violation Maxims, Main Characters, Comedy, Keluarga Beti Comedy Series.

Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate the modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The objective of the research was to describe the types of modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The data of this research was the clauses consisting of modality used in beauty product advertisements which are taken from official account of three local brands on Instagram. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The instrument of this research was observation. The types of modality were analyzed by using the theory of Carrettero (2007). In this research was found four types of modality.
