Abstract

This research aims to describe the ability of active/expresive language and passive/ reseptive language of an autistic student and the effort to improve the language itself helped by the teacher and the shadow teacher in a non-govermental school in Medan. This research uses qualitative descriptive with study case of an autistic student in primary second grader , his initial is FR. Technique of data collection are observation, interview, and documentation. Technique of data analysis are data condensation, data display and verification and conclusion. The result of research showed that the ability of active/expressive language of FR still had difficulties in pronouncing, unclear articulation for certain letter such as r, n, ny, l, talk simple, unable to have interaction and communication properly, unable to convey the information, requesting what he needed use incomplete sentence when he got depresion, he needed help in writing. And the ability of passive/ receptive FR still have difficulties to comprehend the sentence he heard, able to understand simple sentence only based on his daily experience, able to answer simple sentence when the question asked is same with the statement, respond the long questions by replying the last sentence only, unable to comprehend the reading. Keyword: Active/expressive, passive/receptive, autistic

Abstract

The research was aimed to identify the target needs and learning needs of the tenth grade student of Beauty Study program at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan and to develop English speaking material through CTL for Beauty Study Program. This research was implemented by conducting Research and Development (R n D) study by Borg and Gall. There are four steps were done namely: (1) need analysis; (2) developing material; (3) evaluating and (final revision).  The target clients of this research were 34 people which consisted of (a) 30 students of Tenth grade of Beauty Program chosen by total random sampling technique; (b) English lectures; (c) English teacher; and (d) stakeholder. There were 3 types of technique for collecting the data applied in this research, they were questionnaire which used to gain the need analysis and validate the material, documentation consisted of the existing material, and interview to support the data gained from the previous techniques. The data of the research was analyzed descriptively. The result of this research were (1) the students needed the English speaking material which contains the material relating to their filed expertise and supported by innovative and creative learning process, and (2) the English speaking material developed through CTL is a set of English speaking material which consisted of 6 units.  Keywords: R and D, Speaking Material, Beauty Study, CTL

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate The Effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning Model on Mathematic Achievement in terms of Critical Thinking.  The type of research used a semi- experimental quantitative research method in which applying two experimental classes with the same sample characteristics. The population was all the students in Kotapinang district and the sample was 62 of the fifth grade elementary students of SDN 112224 Kotapinang. In the experiment class (CTL Model), the sample was 32 students. While in the control class (Conventional Model), the sample was 30 students. Research instrument used Achievement test of 10 questions from sturffing that conducted validity and reliability tests and questionnaire Critical Thinking of 16 statements. Based on the treatment, In the experiment class got Achievement 81,88  While in the control class got Achievement 73,11. And for the result, there was a significant effect on Mathematics Achievement.  Applying CTL model in learning on the fifth grade elementary students who had high critical thinking showed that their mathematics achievement is better than that applying conventional model. So, in conclusion, applying CTL model gave better effect on mathematics achievement of the fifth elementary students in terms of critical thinking in Kotapinang district.

Abstract

Model pembelajaran dan karakteristik siswa adalah faktor yang mempengaruhi peningkatan hasil belajar siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan hasil belajar IPS siswa yang dibelajarkan menggunakan model inkuiri terbimbing dengan menggunakan pembelajaran ekspositori, menganalisis perbedaan hasil belajar IPS siswa yang memiliki keterampilan sosial tinggi dengan memiliki keterampilan sosial rendah dan menganalisis interaksi antara metode pembelajaran dan keterampilan sosial terhadap hasil belajar IPS siswa. Sampel ditetapkan sebanyak 54 orang terdiri dari 2 (dua) kelas. Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah desain eksperimen. Teknik analisis menggunakan Anova 2x2. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil belajar IPS siswa menggunakan model inkuiri terbimbing lebih tinggi daripada hasil belajar IPS siswa dengan ekspositori, hasil belajar IPS siswa memiliki keterampilan sosial tinggi lebih tinggi daripada hasil belajar IPS siswa memiliki keterampilan sosial rendah. Berdasarkan hasil uji Anova diketahui bahwa harga sig=0,041<0,05, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat interaksi antara penggunaan model pembelajaran dan keterampilan sosial dalam memberikan pengaruh terhadap hasil belajar IPS siswa

Abstract

This study aims to 1) explain how the AKM-based recount text formative assessment in class X students' reading skills is developed, 2) describe the validity of AKM-based recount text formative assessment on class X students' reading skills, 3) describe the effectiveness of AKM-based recount text formative assessment in reading skills of class X students. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) model, consisting of three main stages, namely: preliminary study, development and design of the assessment, validation of the assessment sheet. The results of the study describe the process of developing formative assessment through the stages of literature review, needs analysis, drafting, design, testing, revision, and expert validation. The validation process was carried out on question validation and expert validation, the results of the validation of the questions showed a valid, reliable formative assessment, the level of difficulty was in the "Medium" criteria and the differentiating power was in the "Good" criteria. The product validity results were declared according to the content expert validator with an average score of 96.74 on the "Very Good" criterion, the format expert validator with an average score of 92.42 on the "Very Good" criterion, and the linguist validator with an average score average 82.81 on the "Good" criteria. The overall average of the validation aspect is 90.66 in the "Very Good" criterion. The effectiveness of the process is based on student learning outcomes in the 2 trials with an average score of 59.17 and 58.00 respectively which is below the KKM = 70. This means that the formative assessment product does not meet the criteria of effectiveness based on cognitive processes, based on teacher feedback and students on formative assessment sheets the average results of teacher and student feedback were 82.50 and 85.92 respectively in the "Good" criterion so that formative assessment products met the effective criteria.

Abstract

The research dealt with speech function used by male and female teachers in classroom interaction. The aims of this study were: (1) to discover the types of speech function used by male and female teachers in classroom interaction (2) to describe how the speech functions are realized as the ways they are (3) to elaborate the reasons why the speech function are realized as the ways they are. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected by following instruments: observing, recording and interviewing. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) the types of speech function that have been found in the male and female teachers in the classroom are statement, question, offer, command, initiating minor, acknowledgement, contradiction, answer, compliance and responding minor. (2) For the realization of speech function by male male and female teachers, there are two ways that have been found in realization of mood structure of male and female teachers talk, namely, typical clause mood, and non typical clause mood. In typical clause mood, there are four ways that have been found, namely statement that realized in declarative mood, then, question that realized in interrogative mood, command that realized in imperative mood, after that minor initiating that realized in minor. Beside that, in non typical clause mood, it is found there are four ways in realization of mood by male and female teachers, namely statement that realized by tagged declarative, question that realized by declarative, offer that realized by declarative and command that realized by declarative.(3) For the reasons in realization of mood by male and female teachers, In this study, the researcher found that reasons in realization of speech function of male and female teachers during the learning process was affected by teachers’ belief related to the teacher’s knowledge about the mood which are typical mood (congruent) and non-typical mood (incongruent). In typical mood, male and female teachers believe by initiating statement, initiating question, and initiating command have particular reasons. In non-typical mood (incongruent), both of male and female teachers believe that the use of Indonesian language influences the realization of speech function in metaphorical remarkKeywords: Speech Functions, Gender and Classroom Interaction.

Abstract

The development of HOTS-based text questions is considered very important to be developed for high school students. based on the objectives of the 2013 Curriculum education unit which states that "The management and implementation of education aims to build a foundation for the development of the potential of students to become human ... knowledgeable, competent, critical, creative, and innovative ..." (PP No. 17 of 2010), then Therefore, it is necessary to develop HOTS-based text questions in order to achieve this goal. HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) is a high-level thinking ability that must be achieved by students. This study aims to develop HOTS-based test questions proposed by Bloom's revisions C4 (analyze), C5 (evaluate), C6 (create). This study uses the type of research and development proposed by Borg and Gall (1985). The first stage in the preliminary study obtained data from interviews and documentation studies. In the second stage, the question development process is carried out together with the teacher. Phase three, revising and validating it to match the learning indicators.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of concept circle strategy on the students' vocabulary achievement in reading descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the students of SMP Panca Budi Medan, Academic Year 2015/2016. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Concept Circle Strategy while the control group was taught by using Frayer Model Strategy. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the mean scores of the students in the experimental group was significantly higher than the mean scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant α= 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 50 with t-observed value 3.13> t-table value 2.009. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The findings indicated that using Concept Circle Strategysignificantly affected the students’ vocabulary achievement in reading descriptive text.

Abstract

Writing is one of skills in English and it’s important for students, also it is not an easy skill to master. As stated by Richards and Renandya (2002: 303), writing is the most difficult skill to master for second or foreign language students. Writing skills are placed in the last section after three skills namely listening, speaking, and reading. It can be said that students must apply everything they have in the previous three stages. This study aims to develop a writing assessment rubric for explanation text for eleventh grade, to assess student writing related to the availability of the 2013 Curriculum for English subjects in the school. This research is about how and why, which is the process of explanation text itself and at the same time can improve their writing skills. This research method uses research and development methods (R&D). It is hoped that by using reliable rubrics, teachers can easily assess the writing performance of their students who meet the requirements of the writing aspects. The expert gives some corrections and suggestions on the development writing assessment rubric. Based on the result of the writing assessment rubric, the average was 3,7 and the percentage was 93,7% that categorized in “Very Good” category.Keywords: Assessment Rubric, Students’ Explanation Text, Writing

Abstract

This study was aimed to develop Seesaw as media based on Scientific Approach for teaching speaking of recount text for grade ten at SMA Swasta Tritunggal Tanjungbalai. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, conducting needs analysis, designing Seesaw as media based on Scientific Approach, validating the product to the experts, revising the product, and releasing Seesaw as media as the final product. The subjects of the study were the English teacher and grade ten students of SMA Swasta Tritunggal Tanjungbalai. The data were gathered by document study, interviewing the English teacher, and distributing questionnaires to grade ten students of science class that consisted of 26 students to get the students’ needs. The product (Seesaw) had validated by two experts, namely; an English lecturer and an English teacher. The overall assessment showed that the developed Seesaw was valid to be used for teaching spoken recount text by obtaining an average score of 4.46 or 89.2% and it was categorized as “very good”.
