Abstract

This study explores the language functions of the linguistic landscape at the Medan train station, focusing on its symbolic and informational roles. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, the research highlights the distinct characteristics of the linguistic landscape in this location. The findings reveal a dominance of monolingual Indonesian, which facilitates easy comprehension of billboards and signage for the majority of the population. Informational functions are well-developed, effectively serving to guide and assist users in navigating the station. Additionally, the inclusion of logos, such as the PT KAI logo, emphasizes the credibility and official nature of the messages conveyed. However, the research also identifies a significant underutilization of the symbolic function in the linguistic landscape, with limited representation of local cultural or linguistic elements. This gap is influenced by the public's mindset and a lack of attention to the potential of linguistic landscapes as tools for cultural preservation and identity expression. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of language usage patterns in public spaces and underscores the need for greater integration of symbolic elements, such as traditional scripts and multilingual signage, to enrich the cultural representation and literacy of the community. These findings hold implications for improving the design and functionality of billboards at the Medan train station, ensuring they serve both practical and cultural purposes for diverse users.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of using educational games on improving students' vocabulary mastery in learning English and Japanese. Using a quantitative and experimental approach, this study involved students who were learning both foreign languages, both at secondary school and college levels. The research sample was selected using a purposive sampling method, and the instruments used included pre-test, post-test, observation, and questionnaire. The results of the analysis showed a significant increase in students' vocabulary mastery after interacting with educational games, with a p value <0.05. In addition, observations showed that students were more active and motivated in learning using educational games compared to conventional methods. The questionnaire revealed that the majority of students felt more confident in using new vocabulary and were more motivated to learn. These findings are in line with previous studies showing that gamification elements in educational games increase student engagement and motivation. However, the effectiveness of educational games can vary depending on the type of game used and the individual learning preferences of students. This study concludes that educational games can be an effective learning tool in improving vocabulary mastery, provided that they are adjusted to students' preferences and learning styles. Further studies are recommended to explore the most influential gamification elements and combine educational games with traditional methods for more optimal results.

Abstract

This study explores the role of deep learning technologies in enhancing English language acquisition, focusing on how artificial intelligence-powered tools impact learners' development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis across three educational settings where deep learning applications—such as speech recognition, automated writing feedback, and AI-driven chatbots—were actively used. The findings reveal that deep learning supports more personalized, adaptive, and autonomous learning experiences, with notable improvements in pronunciation, writing accuracy, vocabulary retention, and learner motivation. However, challenges such as technological limitations, unequal access, and insufficient teacher training were also identified. The study concludes that deep learning technologies hold significant potential as complementary tools in English language education, provided they are thoughtfully integrated into pedagogical frameworks. Implications for educators, policymakers, and future research are discussed.

Abstract

This study examines the acceptance of grief and changes in family dynamics shown in the film "Bila Esok Ibu Tiada" by Rudy Soedjarwo. The film focuses on the emotional journey of a family facing the loss of a mother, raising a deep theme of how each family member goes through the process of accepting grief. Using a hermeneutic approach, the study explores the different stages of grief identified by Kübler-Ross, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, to show how the characters interact and cope with loss. The results of the analysis show that the film not only depicts the grief of loss, but also the far-reaching impact on relationships between family members, where the experience of grief can create conflict and strengthen bonds. The journal provides insights into the representation of grieving experiences in cultural contexts, and how film can serve as a medium for understanding and reflecting on the complex dynamics in family life after loss.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to enhance the English speaking proficiency of youth in Sei Tualang, Labuhanbatu Utara, through the implementation of interactive learning methods. The background of this program lies in the limited exposure and opportunities for rural youth to practice English communicatively, resulting in low confidence, limited vocabulary, and anxiety in speaking. To address this gap, the program designed a four-week interactive learning workshop that utilized student-centered methods such as role-playing, vocabulary games, storytelling, peer discussions, and real-life conversation simulations. The implementation involved both instructional delivery and motivational strategies to create a non-threatening, supportive learning atmosphere. The participants, aged between 13 and 18 years, were actively involved in communicative tasks that gradually increased in complexity. Pre- and post-activity observations and facilitator journals indicated a noticeable improvement in fluency, vocabulary range, pronunciation accuracy, and confidence. Participants demonstrated a higher willingness to communicate in English and showed a growing ability to sustain short conversations on familiar topics. Beyond linguistic outcomes, the program also fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and self-expression among the learners. Despite challenges such as limited access to technological tools and English materials, the creative adaptation of activities to suit the local context ensured the success of the program. This community engagement highlights that interactive and contextualized learning methods can serve as an effective approach to address the language learning needs of youth in under-resourced areas.
