Abstract

Body-part terms are a productive source of lexical meaning extension, but Javanese research has mainly described selected metaphors and proverbs rather than the distribution of related senses in a general corpus. Purpose: This study identifies the body-part lexemes attested in a contemporary Javanese treebank, distinguishes literal and extended uses, and reconstructs the cognitive mechanisms linking their senses. Method: A corpus-assisted qualitative analysis was conducted on the UD Javanese-CSUI treebank containing 1,000 sentences and 14,343 tokens. Thirty-one candidate body-part forms were searched, normalized into lexical families, and examined through concordance-based contextual analysis. Metaphorical extension was diagnosed through perceived similarity, while metonymic extension was identified through contiguity, function, or part-participant association. Results: Fifty-seven raw tokens were retrieved; one proper name was excluded, leaving 56 relevant tokens in 12 lexical families. Extended uses accounted for 29 tokens (51.8%). The domain ATI/MANAH dominated the extended data and lexicalized emotion, moral disposition, inner voice, and psychological stability. TANGAN/ASTA encoded control and responsibility, while SIKIL, KUPING, LENGEN, and JANTUNG produced participant, evaluative, object-part, and emotional extensions. Conclusion: Javanese body-part polysemy is systematic but distributionally unequal. Internal-state meanings are highly conventionalized, whereas object and participant extensions are sparse in the sampled corpus. The findings support a usage-based semantic-network model and provide a replicable basis for Javanese lexicography and figurative-language annotation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of intertextuality and social criticism in the short story Dodolitdodolitdodolibret by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, as well as their relevance to the conditions of freedom of expression in the digital era. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Julia Kristeva's intertextuality theory and Pierre Bourdieu's social criticism theory. The primary data is the short story text, while secondary data comes from literature studies and previous studies. The results show that Seno Gumira Ajidarma builds intertextuality through the use of sound, repetition, and absurdity as symbolic forms of censored communication. Social criticism appears in the form of satire against the power that silences freedom of speech. When reread in the context of the digital era, the message in this short story remains relevant, because it shows the existence of a form of "new censorship" through algorithms, disinformation, and viral culture that suppresses freedom of expression.

Abstract

This study focuses on Japanese verb conjugation learning among beginner-level self-directed learners and to examine the relationship between learning strategies and conjugation accuracy. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach combined with qualitative analysis involving three self-directed learners at approximately JLPT N5 level. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire on learning strategies and a conjugation test covering polite form (ます形), te-form (て形), past form (た形), negative form (ない形), and phonological changes in godan verbs. The findings indicate a positive tendency between structured learning strategies and higher conjugation accuracy. Learners who actively classified verbs, engaged in repeated practice, and performed self-correction achieved significantly higher test scores compared to those who relied primarily on exposure without systematic strategies. The most noticeable differences appeared in godan verb conjugation, which requires pattern recognition and phonological rule generalization. These results suggest that the quality of learning strategies plays a more crucial role than the amount of study time in developing a stable morphological system among self-directed Japanese language learners.

Abstract

Inclusive education remains a significant challenge in rural areas where access to appropriate learning media and professional training is limited. This study aimed to develop contextually relevant and accessible learning media for students with special needs through a collaborative, community-based approach in Rahuning, Asahan. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method and grounded in participatory action research (PAR), the project engaged elementary school teachers, parents, local education officers, and university lecturers in co-designing and implementing inclusive learning tools. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observations, and document analysis. The results demonstrated that active stakeholder involvement led to the creation of practical, low-cost, and engaging learning materials tailored to various disabilities. Furthermore, the process fostered increased awareness, empathy, and a sense of ownership among participants, leading to a shift toward more inclusive practices in the classroom. The study concludes that inclusive education can be significantly improved in under-resourced settings when driven by community collaboration and local empowerment. This research contributes a practical model for inclusive media development that is both sustainable and scalable in similar educational contexts.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to empower students’ English speaking skills through the integration of AI-supported TikTok-based learning platforms at MAN Labuhanbatu Utara. The program involved 30 students and employed a participatory and practice-based approach focusing on active engagement and communicative language use. The activities were conducted through several stages, including needs analysis, implementation, and evaluation. During the implementation, students were guided to create short English speaking videos using TikTok supported by artificial intelligence features such as automated subtitles and pronunciation assistance. The results indicated noticeable improvements in students’ speaking fluency, pronunciation, confidence, and learning motivation. Students became more actively involved in speaking activities and demonstrated increased willingness to communicate in English. The use of AI-supported tools facilitated self-correction and autonomous learning, while TikTok created a low-anxiety and engaging learning environment. Overall, the program demonstrates that AI-supported TikTok-based learning platforms offer an innovative and effective approach to enhancing English speaking skills in a madrasah educational context.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of accent on a second language and the impact of accent on second language listening comprehension. Utilizing an experimental approach, we collected data from the group of participants exposed to different accents in the context of teaching English as a second language. Data analysis methods involved evaluating listening comprehension through tests and interviews. The results indicate that specific accents can influence the level of listening comprehension, with significant implications for second language teaching and curriculum material development.

Abstract

Multilingual university students are expected to produce academically credible texts in both English and Indonesian, yet language instruction often separates the two languages and treats students’ first-language resources as interference. This conceptual article develops a translanguaging-based project-based learning framework for strengthening university academic literacy. An integrative review and pedagogical design synthesis were conducted using recent peer-reviewed studies on translanguaging, project-based learning, academic writing, feedback, and Indonesian higher education, while retaining seminal academic-literacies sources. The synthesis generated five design principles: purposeful bilingual task architecture, authentic knowledge-building projects, staged movement across languages and modes, dialogic feedback, and dual-focused assessment of disciplinary meaning and language development. The proposed eight-week cycle guides students from multilingual inquiry and source mapping to bilingual planning, audience-specific drafting, peer review, revision, public dissemination, and metalinguistic reflection. The framework positions Indonesian as a cognitive and epistemic resource while maintaining explicit English-development goals. It offers a context-sensitive alternative to English-only instruction and a practical basis for future classroom experimentation in Indonesian universities.
