Abstract

Information need is a cognitive condition where individuals seek relevant information to support decision-making and fulfill specific needs. Understanding information needs is crucial for comprehending information-seeking and use behaviors, especially in the increasingly complex digital age. This study aims to map the development of publications related to information needs, identify research trends and relationships between scientific concepts, as well as author collaboration networks (co-authorship) and keywords. This mapping is beneficial for academics, policymakers, and information professionals. This quantitative descriptive study employed a bibliometric approach, analyzing 3,941 English-language documents indexed in Scopus from 2014 to 2024, using the keyword "information needs." Results indicate a publication increase until 2021, followed by a decline, potentially linked to research focus shifts and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The journal "Library Philosophy and Practice" affirms its significant role in academic discourse. Author collaboration networks demonstrate intense cooperation among researchers from various institutions and countries. Research focuses on information needs, decision-making, and information retrieval, with a significant response to global issues. Keyword visualization reveals a close relationship between information needs, technology, and human behavior. This study concludes that information need is a multidimensional topic with significant contributions across disciplines, offering opportunities for further research, particularly in health information literacy.

Abstract

Backgroud: Limited budgets have compelled libraries to innovate in order to ensure their sustainability. One effective strategy for addressing budget constraints is interlibrary collaboration. Interlibrary collaboration involves cooperative activities between two or more libraries and may also include partnerships with other information-related organizations, such as reference centers, data analysis institutions, and others. Such collaboration is essential because no single library, regardless of its scale or resources, can comprehensively collect all available information. Every library faces limitations in fully meeting users’ information needs. Interlibrary collaboration serves to bridge these gaps by enabling access to information that may not be available in a single institution. Purpose: This study aims to explore research on interlibrary collaboration by analyzing its historical development, supporting and inhibiting factors, and its impact on both users and institutions. Methods: The study employs a narrative literature review method, using the Google Scholar database to identify relevant references. A total of 14 journal articles were analyzed. Results: The findings suggest that interlibrary collaboration can be a viable solution for enhancing library collections. It also fosters stronger institutional relationships, as collaboration contributes to collection development and improves overall library quality. However, several challenges persist, such as limited personnel, which can slow down collaborative processes, and inadequate funding, which can hinder the sustainability of such initiatives. Despite these obstacles, interlibrary collaboration continues to evolve, offering opportunities to refine library strategies and improve the effectiveness of cooperative efforts.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly transformed how the public accesses and disseminates health information. In this emergency context, social media emerged as a primary channel for health communication due to its ability to reach audiences quickly and widely. However, the high volume of information on social media also triggered a surge in misinformation and disinformation, potentially disrupting pandemic mitigation efforts.Purpose: To understand how this issue evolved in the scientific literature, this study aims to analyze the trends and patterns of research on health communication through social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This research applies a bibliometric analysis method with a quantitative descriptive approach, utilizing the Biblioshiny application based on R to analyze 321 articles obtained from the Scopus database within the 2020–2024 period. The analysis includes annual publication trends, average citations per year, identification of key authors and journals, keyword mapping, and distribution of contributions by country and institution. Results: The highest number of publications occurred in 2021, with dominant topics such as “COVID-19,” “social media,” and “public health.” The United States stands out as the leading country in both publication output and citation impact, while the Journal of Medical Internet Research was identified as the most productive journal. Conclusions: Social media plays a strategic role in health communication during the pandemic, and this study reveals the globally evolving structure and dynamics of the scientific discourse. It is expected to contribute to the development of more effective, evidence-based digital health communication policies.

Abstract

Background: As a disaster-prone nation, Indonesia requires robust disaster information literacy. Generation Z, as active social media users, demonstrates distinct patterns of selective exposure to earthquake information on Instagram, influenced by psychological needs, message relevance, and social context.Purpose: This study aims to analyze the psychological factors, message features, and social contexts that influence Generation Z’s selective exposure to local earthquake information on Instagram within the framework of disaster information literacy. Methods: Utilizing a qualitative case study approach centered on the Sumedang earthquake (June 31, 2025–November 5, 2025), this research employed in-depth interviews with six informants, focus group discussions, and visual discourse analysis of 45 posts from local Instagram accounts (@radarsumedang, @inimahsumedang, @tahuekspress, and @sumedangekspresnews). Interviews lasted 45-60 minutes each and were analyzed using NVivo 12 software. Results: Selective exposure is driven by trust, affective needs, and practical motivations. Message features—specifically Instagram Stories for rapid updates, feed posts for in-depth narratives, and infographics for clarity—play a critical role. Furthermore, the social context, including peer recommendations, comment-based verification, and the editorial strategies of local media, significantly shapes engagement. Generation Z demonstrates situational, heterogeneous, and dialogic interaction patterns with disaster information, balancing cognitive needs for accuracy with affective needs for emotional reassurance. Conclusions: Disaster information literacy for Generation Z requires a hybrid strategy that integrates speed, accuracy, empathy, and interactivity to strengthen community preparedness and resilience. This study extends Selective Exposure Theory by identifying "emotional certainty" as a novel motivation, enriches Uses and Gratifications Theory through situational gratifications, and advances Situational Crisis Communication Theory by emphasizing collective social validation in social media-based disaster contexts.
