Abstract

This research investigates EFL learners’ perceptions when reading English novels for their vocabulary acquisition. The participants of this research were English education study program batch 2017 at Universitas Tanjungpura. This research used a descriptive study. The data were collected through google forms for questionnaires and google meet for interviews. The questionnaire was consisting of strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree. The result of this research the highest scored from the questionnaire was 63.3% of EFL learners who agreed they could identify the type of noun and the lowest 3.3% of EFL learners disagreed that they could identify the type of conjunction and the translations of the words. According to the results of the questionnaire and interview that have been collected, the result showed that the perception of EFL learners in reading English novels was enjoyable and helpful. It was because novel parts of literary works contain poetic words. When they read English novels, they found much new vocabulary that they rarely found in daily conversations. Furthermore, because of that, some of the EFL learners did not enjoy reading English novels. EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition increases, and they can learn how to use a word in a sentence. According to their perception, English novel has helped them in acquiring their vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the shadow and tell method in teaching English-speaking skills to eighth-grade students. Using the Show and Tell method, students are given the opportunity to explain an item that is engaging in increasing their interest in practicing speaking in class. A pre-experimental research design was used with one group pre-test and post-test involving 30 students. The sample was chosen by applying cluster random sampling technique. The data of students’ achievement in speaking were collected through pre-test and post-test. These data were quantitatively analyzed, and the results showed that the t-test was higher than the t-table, and the effect size score indicated that the Show and Tell method had a strong effect. The results revealed that the Show and Tell method can be used to teach students’ English-speaking skills. Using objects such as photos and people, the researcher found that students were engaged in speaking English because they were using things they enjoyed, such as classroom items, classmates, or favorite animals. As a result, teaching English speaking skill to students through the Show and Tell method can be enjoyable.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of selected songs on Spotify to continuous tense mastery through a deductive approach. Conducted as a quantitative research employing a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test post-test, it focused on ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 25 Pontianak Utara in the Academic Year 2023/2024. Data collection involved a multiple-choice test comprising 12 questions, validated and deemed reliable through reliability and validity tests. Results indicated a significant enhancement in students' scores, with a pre-test mean score of 61.79 and a post-test mean score of 91.38. The t-test value of 8.508, surpassing the critical t-table value of 1.701, affirmed the alternative hypothesis. Moreover, the effect size of 1.58 signified strong effectiveness. Consequently, the study concluded that selected Spotify songs effectively facilitate continuous tense mastery through deductive methods. This research highlights opportunities for further exploration, suggesting investigation in diverse educational settings or with different student demographics to validate the efficacy of using selected songs for mastering other grammatical tenses.

Abstract

This research aimed todescribe the strategies used by theteachers in teaching English vocabularyto deaf students atSLBN Singkawang in Academic Year 2021/2022. Theinformant of this research was a teacher from SLBNSingkawang who taught English to deaf students for more than10 years. This research was qualitative descriptive research.The researcher interviewed the teacher and used a semistructured interview about the strategies that had been used toteach English vocabulary to deaf students. The documentsanalysis technique was also used to collect the data. Theresearcher used theory by Miles and Huberman (2014) toanalyze the data. The triangulation technique was used tovalidate the data. The research findings showed that thestrategies used by the teacher to teach English vocabulary todeaf students in SLBN Singkawang were giving the studentsindividualized attention, using visual media, sign language,fingerspelling, and drilling.

Abstract

In learning English, the ability to speak English is one of the skills that students need to master, but there are still many students who feel anxious when speaking in front of many people. This study aims (1) to investigate what anxiety factors are faced by second-semester students and (2) to find out the most dominant anxiety factor faced by the students in English speaking performance. The data were collected by using observation and questionnaires. There were 28 students in the second semester of FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak 2022 taken as the subject of this research. In this study, the researcher uses qualitative research as the design. There were seven anxiety factors faced by students in English speaking performance. The factors were grammatical issues (72,49%), lack of vocabulary (71,42%), lack of preparation (62,14%), fear of making mistakes (61,18%), classmates (60,47%), lack of confidence (58,47%), and lack of motivation (49,51%). Meanwhile, the dominant anxiety factor faced by the students was grammatical issues. In conclusion, there were various factors of anxiety faced by the students when performing in English.

Abstract

Students’ interest affects the quality of the learning process. This study aims to improve the quality of the learning process of writing descriptive text by applying the field trip method. This study was conducted in classroom action research, with 7 th- grade students of SMPN 11 Pontianak as its subject. The instruments used in this study included the observation checklist, field notes, interview, and writing test. At the same time, the data analysis is done through an interactive analysis technique. This study was done in two cycles, each consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting activities. This study's result showed that implementing the field trip method in writing the descriptive text improved the students’ learning interest. This result indicated the percentage of students’ attention, willingness, activeness, participation, and happiness that increased during cycles I and II. In addition, it also improved the quality of students’ writing, on aspects word choice, coherence, and sentence structure. According to the quantitative data, the students' cycle 1 test score was 72.18, and their cycle II test score was 80.03. In conclusion, applying the field trip method in teaching writing descriptive texts has proven successful in improving students' interests and abilities.

Abstract

This research study analyzes the politeness strategies employed by the characters in the animated movie Onward and explores the factors that influence their choices. By utilizing the theories of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson, the data obtained in this qualitative research is examined. The research employs observation and note-taking techniques, using video recordings of the movie, transcriptions of the characters' utterances, and tables or data sheets as the primary tools for data collection. The findings reveal that the characters utilize four main types of politeness strategies, including bald on-record, off-record, and negative politeness, with positive politeness emerging as the dominant approach. This means that the characters prioritize maintaining social harmony in their interactions. Additionally, the factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies relevance, circumstances, and payoff were identified, with payoff indicating the primary factors that the characters aim to maximize the benefits of their conversations. Furthermore, the characters' linguistic choices were found to be influenced by the socio-cultural aspects of their society.

Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed to find out the students’ perception of drama subject in supporting their speaking performances in the English Education Study Program at Universitas Tanjungpura. In this research, the researcher used qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected utilizing a questionnaire with 15 characteristics paired with a 5-point Likert Scale instrument ranging from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree" to assess students' speaking perception. In this study, the researcher discovered that the total students' perception of sixth-semester students at Universitas Tanjungpura was 4.10, which was classified as a favorable perception.Based on the data it can be concluded most of the sixth-semester students felt that drama has a positive effect on their language aspects physiological aspects, performance condition, and strategy of teaching and learning.  Keywords : Students’ Perception, Drama, Speaking Performance

Abstract

The paper discusses the effectiveness of teaching simple past tense in narrative text using animation movie to increase students’ grammar achievement of simple past tense in narrative text at the Eight grade students of SMP 1 Ngabang. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of teaching simple past tense in narrative text using animation movie through online learning to the Eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Ngabang in Academic Year 2021/2022. The research method was pre- experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. The sample was the Eighth grade students that consisted of 7 students. The data was collected using measurement technique. The result of this research is analyzed by t-test. The t-ratio 9.58 was higher than the t-critical that was 2.093 on table distribution with α =0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which stated “Teaching simple past tense in narrative text using an animation movie through online learning affect the students’ achievement on the Eight-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Ngabang was accepted. It showed that teaching simple past tense in narrative text using an animation movie through online learning affects students’ grammar achievement of simple past tense.

Abstract

Improving English Vocabulary Proficiency by Using Save the Hangman Game Method to Students of Class VIII B in SMPN 11 Pontianak in Academic Year 2022-2023. This study aimed to enhance English vocabulary proficiency among eighth-grade students in Class VIII B at SMPN 11 Pontianak during the 2022-2023 academic year using the Hangman game method. It employed a Class Action Research approach, focusing on implementing the Save the Hangman game at SMPN 11 Pontianak. The research consisted of two cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection instruments included observation sheets for student and teacher activities, vocabulary tests, and a questionnaire. The findings indicated a 7% increase in vocabulary skills from the first cycle (62%) to the second cycle (70%), reaching the passing criteria of a score above 61. The quality of teacher activity improved by 10%, from 64.52% in the first cycle to 74% in the second cycle. Additionally, student engagement in active learning increased by 14% for very active criteria (from 41% to 55%) and by 16% for active criteria (from 29% to 45%). However, the percentage of students considered active enough decreased by 5% (from 14% to 9%), and no students fell into the less active criteria in the second cycle.
