Abstract

Background: Childhood leprosy is an important marker of the status of the ongoing leprosy control program, as it is an indicator of active disease transmission in the community. Children are believed to be the most vulnerable group to infection with M. leprae due to their immature or nascent immunity and exposure to intrafamilial contacts. Case report: A 8 years ole male patient presented with hypopigmented patch and erythematous patch with not itchy, not pain, and loss of sensation which increasing more since 1 week ago. Initially 2 months ago, white patch that felt numbness appeared on the back, then white patches wider and spread to the chest, both arms and thighs. Dermatologic finding showed erythematous plaques, hypopigmentation macule with infiltration on cheek, back, both of arms, xerosis cutis. Decreased sensory function was found in the median, ulnar and posteriol tibial nerves. Acid-fast bacilli (AFB) staining revealed bacterial index (BI) +5 and morphological index (MI) 80%. Histopathological examination showed atrophic stratified squamous epithelium, grenz zone, many groups of foamy macrophages reached the fat layer. The patient was diagnosed Morbus Hansen borderline lepromatous leprosy type with mild reversal reaction and treated with MDT-MB drug package, vitamin B complex tablet, zinc tablet, paracetamol tablet, and 10% urea cream on dry skin 2 times a day on dry skin after bath during 2 month and the lesion was reduced. Conclusion: The rate of childhood leprosy continues to be a significant problem. There is a clear need to strengthen early detection, treatment, and regular follow up of these cases in both high and low endemic setting is essential in the prevention of deformities.

Abstract

Nagari Salimpek in Alahan Panjang, West Sumatra, has a potential for wellness tourism due to its rich biodiversity, especially medicinal and cosmetic plants. However, community awareness in managing Family Medicinal Gardens (TOGA) remain limited, with only three of twenty household groups actively cultivating herbal plants. This condition emphasizes the need for community empowerment to optimize health and economic benefits from local resources. This community service program aimed to enhance local capacity in cultivating and processing TOGA as the basis for developing a Herbal Cosmetic Village. The programme began on 19 July 2025 and was evaluated over six months. Activities included educational sessions on TOGA utilization, training on herbal and cosmetic plant processing, distribution and planting of herbal seeds, and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with local stakeholders. A pre-test and post-test evaluation involving 31 participants showed significant improvement in knowledge, with understanding of the “herbal center village” concept rising from 29% to 55% and awareness of Nagari Salimpek’s potential increasing from 32% to 77%. Overall, participants gained broader insights into the role of TOGA in health, cosmetics, and economic development. These results highlight the importance of continued education, mentorship, and government support to establish Nagari Salimpek as a model Herbal Cosmetic Village for wellness tourism.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

BackgroundMalignant melanoma (MM) is a neoplasia derived from melanocytes. This is the most aggressive cancer ofskin. Even small tumors may have a tendency to metastasize and thus lead to a relatively unfavorableprognosis. Malignant melanoma depth of invasion based on Clark level is one of the important prognosticfactors to determine survival rate of MM patient. Determination of invasion based on this Clark level issubjective, more objective checks such as Ki-67 and E-Cadherin are required. This examination isexpected to see the risk of metastasis in MM. Cell proliferation is the main key for tumor progression and itcan be measured with Ki-67 expression. E-cadherin is one of transmembrane protein that plays importantrole in metastasis. The purpose of this study is to determine correlation between Ki-67 and E-Cadherinexpression with depth of invasion of malignant melanoma based on Clark level.MethodsThis is cross sectional study in Padang and Jakarta, with 42 cases of malignant melanoma which havebeen diagnosed in Pathology Anatomic Laboratory in West Sumatera. Samples were obtained fromparaffin block of or tissue from surgery and have been reviewed depth of invasion based on the Clark level. These samples were divided into I-V Clark level group. Ki-67 expression of cells nuclei and expression ofE-Cadherin of cells membrane were analyzed using immunohistochemistry assay. One Way Annovabivariate statistical analysis were used and value p<0.05 were considered significant.ResultsPositive Ki-67 expression were found in 42 cases, 6 samples with II Clark level, 8 samples with III Clarklevel, 19 samples with IV Clark level, 9 samples with V Clark level. Malignant melanomas were mostlyfound in male 60-79 age group and depth of invasion in IV Clark level. Positive E-Cadherin expression in IIClark level. There was significant correlation between Ki-67 and E-Cadherin

Abstract

ABSTRACT Indonesia is one of the countries with high exposure to sunlight, and most of its population works outdoors, making skin protection necessary. While sunlight provides benefits, it also has harmful effects on the skin if exposed excessively. Ultraviolet rays, UVB and UVA, work synergistically to damage the skin, thus requiring prevention or protection to reduce the negative impacts of radiation. Excessive sun exposure is the main exogenous mediator of skin damage. The negative effects of sun exposure on the skin lead to various skin problems such as darkening, wrinkles, dullness, and the appearance of dark brown spots, and it can even cause skin cancer. Therefore, using sunscreen is crucial as it can prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin. This study uses a literature review design, where relevant scientific articles are analyzed to explore the potential of natural ingredients as sunscreen agents. A total of 9 articles were collected from various databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, using specific keywords related to UV protection, natural sunscreen, and bioactive compounds in plants. The selection of articles was based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, ensuring that only recent and relevant studies were considered. Natural ingredients have not yet been widely utilized in the sunscreen industry. Plants contain substances that can be extracted and serve as a potential source of sunscreen due to their photoprotective properties. This provides insight into the ability of plants to protect the skin through the compounds they contain, such as bioactive compounds like phenolic substances and antioxidants.
