Abstract

The vagina is an ecosystem consisting of various species of microorganisms (microbiota) that play important role in maintaining vaginal health. The vaginal ecosystem includes a variety of species classified into aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms which are vaginal microbiota (VMB). In the vagina of a healthy woman, 70% of normal microbiota is dominated by the Lactobacillus species. Lactobacillus is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium, and belongs to the group of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). LAB produces lactic acid which plays a role in maintaining vaginal acidity at pH

Abstract

Background: Condyloma acuminata (CA) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Current standard treatment has limitations, so effective and safe alternative therapies are needed. Garlic (Allium sativum L.) has long been used in traditional medicine and has potential as an antiviral and antitumor agent. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of garlic extract as a CA therapy modality through meta-analysis. Methods: A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to identify randomized controlled clinical studies (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of garlic extract in CA patients. Extracted data included study characteristics, interventions, sample size, clinical outcomes, and side effects. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4 software. Results: A total of 8 RCTs involving 542 CA patients met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that garlic extract was significantly more effective in clearing CA lesions compared with placebo (OR 2.87; 95% CI 1.95-4.23; p < 0.00001). Garlic extract also demonstrated comparable effectiveness to standard therapies such as podophyllin and imiquimod. There was no significant difference in the incidence of side effects between the garlic extract group and the control group. Conclusion: Garlic extract is an effective and safe therapeutic modality for CA. Further studies with more robust designs are needed to confirm these findings and explore the mechanism of action of garlic extract on CA.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicle and its causes are multifactorial. Smoking causes changes in skin microcirculation, keratinocytes, fibroblasts and blood vessels. Physical activity can cause acne vulgaris because there is an increase in sweat secretion followed by sebum hypersecretion. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between smoking and physical activity with the incidence of acne vulgaris. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design conducted in December 2021 at the Faculty of Medicine, Unand and the Griya Satya Clinic. The research population was male students of the Faculty of Medicine, Unand batch 2018. The method used total sampling method, there were 61 respondents in the age range of 19-22 years. The data obtained were primary data from a questionnaire and the diagnosis was confirmed by extraction of comedones. The analysis uses the chi-square test to determine the relationship between variables. Results: The results of statistical test using thetest chi-square showed that, there is no significant relationship between smoking habits and the incidence of acne vulgaris (p = 0.335), there is no significant relationship between physical activity habits and the incidence of acne vulgaris (p value = 0.851), there is no relationship significant relationship between smoking habits and physical activity with the incidence of acne (p value = 0.335). Conclusion: Medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, most of them had light smoking habit and most of them had moderate-to-heavy physical activity. And there is no relationship between smoking and physical activity toward the incidence of acne vulgaris.

Abstract

Leprosy is still a health problem in several countries, including Indonesia. Disability due to leprosy is a health threat for sufferers and causes quality-of-life problems that can disrupt the productivity of leprosy patients. Ocular involvement in leprosy is joint, but little data has been reported. Apart from multi-drug treatment (MDT), leprosy sufferers must also be able to carry out continuous self-care to prevent further disability. This is a collaborative activity between the Department of Ophthalmology and Dermatology Venereology of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Andalas in Puskesmas Pauh Kamba district of Padang Pariaman. This is an advocacy activity on self-care (3M: Seeing, Examining, and Protecting) and eye examination. The activity was followed by interactive discussions and continued with a direct examination for skin abnormalities and disabilities, eye examination, and fundoscope. The activity results were obtained from 24 respondents, 11 men and 13 women. The age range is 16-59 years (67%), with the highest level of education being Elementry School graduates, which is 11 people (46%). In the self-care questionnaire of patients, 40% behaved well, and the results of eye examinations almost suffered from dry eye complaints without disabilities.

Abstract

A study has been conducted on the healing effect of excision wounds using subfraction ointment of ethyl acetate of meniran leaves (Phyllathus niruri L.) with a concentration of 5% on the percentage of wound healing area, epithelialization time, and hydroxyproline levels in male white rats. This study consisted of 3 groups of rats based on ointment grouping, and each group consisted of 15 rats; from 15 rats, they were grouped again into 3 groups based on the day of taking the results of the wound healing parameters, namely days (5, 10 and 15); each group consisted of 5 rats, where group 1 was control with the administration of ointment base, group 2 was given (T® ointment) as a comparison, and group 3 was treated with the administration of the test preparation topically with subfraction ethyl acetate concentration of 5%. Each group was observed and measured for the percentage of wound healing area, epithelialization time, and hydroxyproline levels on days 5, 10, and 15. The results of data analysis using one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's test (SPSS 23.0) showed a significant difference between the control group and the treatment group in terms of the percentage of wound healing area, epithelialization time and hydroxyproline levels (p<0.05), so it can be concluded that the preparation of ethyl acetate subfraction ointment of meniran leaves with a concentration of 5% has an effect as an excision wound therapy.

Abstract

Background: Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is one of the most common occupational diseases worldwide. Occupational diseases in hospitals can affect all workers, including both medical and non-medical personnel, such as cleaning service workers. Purpose: This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of OCD of the hands among cleaning service workers at Dr. M. Djamil Central General Hospital Padang. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling with 77 total samples. The data were collected by direct interview with a questionnaire instrument. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis with a chi-square test. Result: The results revealed that 28 out of 77 respondents experienced OCD (36.4%). The results of the chi-square test show that the factors of gender (p=0.000) and the use of moisturizers (p=0.017) had a significant relationship with the incidence of OCD. Meanwhile, the factors of age (p=0.725), working period (p=0.492), duration of contact (p=0.862), history of skin diseases (p=0.176), history of atopy (p=0.421), duration of PPE use (p=0.119) did not have a significant relationship with the incidence of OCD. Conclusion: The study concludes that the incidence of OCD of the hands among cleaning service workers at Dr. M. Djamil Central General Hospital Padang is correlated with their gender and their use of moisturizers.
