Abstract

Aquilaria microcarpa is one of agarwood-producing plants, Interaction of pathogenic fungi may cause physiological changes in plants that have an impact on visual changes in cells, tissues or organs of plants. This study aims to determine differences in the anatomical characters of Aquilaria microcarpa that have been inoculated with Fusarium sp. Observations of anatomical characters showed that traits of inoculated and un-inoculated Aquilaria microcarpa in general are partly different. The difference was found in wood color, odor/aroma, the pores of wood and leather inserted visible. Chemical compounds contained in the plant interact with fusarium was Elemol, Baimuxinal, 3-phenyl-2-butanone, chromen-4-one.

Abstract

Background Dipterocarpus littoralis Blume is a critically endangered dipterocarp species found only on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java, Indonesia. Patterns of genetic diversity and population genetic structure of adults and saplings in two extant populations (Kali Jati and Solok Besek) were estimated using ten microsatellite markers. Results A total of 39 alleles was found, with two and four alleles being unique in adult and sapling populations, respectively. Allelic richness and heterozygosity was similar between adult (Ar = 3.00; He = 0.423) and sapling (Ar = 3.25; He = 0.441) populations.Inbreeding coefficientsin saplingswere positive in both populations and statistically significant in Kali Jati, while those in adult populations were not significantly different from zero, indicating excessive inbreeding and selfing in the sapling populations. Genetic differentiation of the sapling populations (FST = 0.036) was slightly lower than in the adult populations (0.050), but only significantly so for saplings. Conclusions This study revealed that D. littoralis has low genetic diversity in both adults and saplings. Similarly low values in allele richness and heterozygosity suggest that reductions of population size have been ongoing for long periods in this species. Significant genetic differentiation between sapling populations but not adult populations indicates that recent fragmentation is further accelerating the isolation process.

Abstract

Zulfahmi, Siregar IZ, Siregar UJ (2010) Chloroplast DNA variation of Shorea acuminata Dyer in Sumatra assessed by microsatellite markers. Biodiversitas 11: 107-111. Shorea acuminata Dyer is member of the Dipterocarpaceae family. It is ecologically and commercially important in the Indonesian region. In the present study, chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSRs) were used to study the distribution of chloroplast DNA haplotypes and to assess the variation within and among populations of S. acuminata from Riau and Jambi provinces eastern part of Sumatra. Based on chloroplast microsatellite analysis, six haplotypes were observed for S. acuminata, namely haplotype P, Q, R, S, T, and U, respectively. The high haplotype variation was detected in Bukit Barisan National Park (TNBT) population (five haplotypes); it may be due to TNBT population status as national parks (conservation area) under government protection. The value of genetic differentiation measured for S. acuminata was Gst = 0.150. The Gst values in this study is lower than the mean Gst value estimated in angiosperms plant for maternally inherited. Information on the status of genetic variation of the species in this study could be used as scientific consideration in formulating appropriate strategies for conservation and sustainable utilization ofgenetic resources.Key words: Dipterocarpaceae, Shorea acuminata, chloroplast microsatellites, genetic variation
