Abstract

Background : White Soy beans (Glycine max) contain saponin and tripsin inhibitor that have been known having anthelmintic effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of White Soy beans extract toward death time of Ascaris suum, in vitro. Methods : The study was a laboratory experimental research using post test only controlled group design. The subjects were an adult male and female worms (Ascaris suum) that their body length were around 15 cm 35 cm. The sampling technique used was convenience sampling. The subject was arranged into 6 groups, each group consisted of 4 worms, replication was performed 4 times. NaCl 0.9 % and pirantel pamoat 5 mg/ml was added in the negative control group and in the positive control group, in a row.While white soy beans extract of concentration of 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% w/v were added to the treatment group. Worms were immersed in 25 ml test solution and incubated at 37C. The subjects were observed every 10 minutes and the number of dead worms was counted. Data were analyzed with linear regression and Pearson correlation. Results : The data of observation showed that total death mean time of Ascaris suum in the negative control and positive control were 2817.5 minutes and 42.5 minutes, while in the treatment group of concentration of 60% , 70% , 80% , and 90% w/v of white soy beans extract were 422.5 minutes, 370 minutes, 300 minutes, and 255 minutes, successively. The Pearson correlation test showed very close relationship between variation of the concentration and time of death worms (r = - 0.962). The linear regession test showed significantly (p<0.001) and the regression equation was Y = 2653.400 30.340 X and R square was 0.926. Conclusion : White soy beans (Glycine max) extract had effects to the mortality of Ascaris suum in vitro. The most effective white soy beans extract was 90% (w/v) although it was less effective than pirantel pamoat. Keywords : White Soy beans (Glycine max) Extract, Ascaris suum, death time.

Abstract

Introduction: Ascaris suum, Goeze pseudocoelom and perienteric body fluid is suggested to have antifungal effect to Candida albicans, (C.P. Robin) Berkhout because of Ascaris suum antibacterial factor (ASABF) which presents in pseudocoelom body fluid and neuropeptide-like protein 29 and caenacin-2 which present in perienteric body fluid. This research is conducted to prove the antifungal effect of Ascaris suum, Goeze pseudocoelom and perienteric body fluid to Candida albicans, (C.P. Robin) Berkhout in vitro. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental research. Candida albicans, (C.P. Robin) Berkhout speciments were tested using Ascaris suum, Goeze pseudocoelom and perienteric body fluid with concentration of each were 80%, 90%, and 100%. Specimens were incubated in temperature of 37oC for 24 hours and the inhibitory zone was measured. Result: Ascaris suum, Goeze pseudocoelom and perienteric body fluid didnt create any inhibitory zone in Candida albicans, (C.P. Robin) Berkhout inoculation. Conclusion: Ascaris suum, Goeze pseudocoelom and perienteric body fluid didn't have antifungal effect to Candida albicans, (C.P. Robin) Berkhout. Abstract

Background: Syzygium polyanthum Wight leaves contain tannin that has been known to have anthelmintic effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of Syzygium polyanthum Wight leaves extract toward death time of Ascaris suum, Goeze In Vitro Methods: The study was a laboratory experimental research using the post-test only controlled group design. Subjects were adult Ascaris suum, Goeze. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Subjects were divided into 7 groups, each group consisted of 4 worms, replication was performed 4 times. Saline solution was used in negative control group, pirantel pamoate 5 mg/ml was used in positive control group, while the treatment group used Syzygium polyanthum Wight leaves extract concentration of 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, and 90%. Worms were immersed in 25 mL of the test solution and incubated at 37C. Observations were done every 1 hour and the number of dead worms was counted. Data were analyzed with regression linier and probit analysis. Results: Observations of total deaths mean time Ascaris suum, Goeze sp on negative control was for 96 hours, on the positive control was for 2 hours 30 minutes, and on the concentration of 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, and 90% of Syzygium polyanthum Wight leaves extract, each was for 10 hours 15 minutes, 8 hours, 6 hours, 4 hours 45 minutes and 3 hours, consecutively. Linear regression test results showed that the variation of the concentration affected long worm death. Probit analysis results showed that LC50 and LT50 of Syzygium polyanthum Wight leaves extract, each was 76.228% and 3 hours 36 minutes. Conclusions:Based on this study, it could be concluded that of Syzygium polyanthum Wight leaves extract affected mortality of Ascaris suum, Goeze sp in vitro. Abstract

Background : Carrots contain quercetin that can be used as antihelmintik. Quercetin is a class of flavonoid glycosides. This study aimed to determine the effect of carrots extract (Daucus carota, L.) against the death time of Ascaris suum, Goeze in vitro. Methods :This study was a laboratory experimental research using post-test only controlled group design. Subjects were Ascaris suum, Goeze which were still in active movement. Sampling technique used in this study was convenience sampling. Subjects were arranged into 7 groups, each group consisted of 4 worms, replication was done 4 times. Pyrantel pamoate 5mg/ml and physiological saline were successively added to the test solution of positive control and negative control group, while carrots Extract (Daucus carota, Linn) of 70%, 75%, 80%, 85% and 90% were added to the test solution of treatment groups. Worms were soaked in 25 ml of test solution and incubated at 37C. Observations were done every hour until all the worms died. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and linear regression. Results : There was a significant correlation between the concentration variables and time of death of the worms variable (p value of Pearson correlation was 0.000 (<0.050). The higher concentration of the carrot extract was the shorter time of death of worms (Correlation coefficient of concentration variable and time of death of the worms variable was - 0.960). The linear regression equation was Y = 53.775 - 0.609X. Conclusion : The Carrots extract (Daucus carota, Linn) had effects on accelerating the time of death of Ascaris suum, Gooze in vitro. Abstract

Introduction: Much of data states that there has been resistance to candidiasis therapy drugs. It is necessary to consider candidiasis therapy using alternative medicines. Caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum [L.] Griff.) investigated because it suspected contains compounds that have the potential against the growth of Candida albicans, such as alkaloid, saponin, tannin and flavonoid. The purpose of this research is to determine the antifungal effect of caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum [L.] Griff.) ethanol extract to the growth of Candida albicans in vitro. Methods: This type of research is an laboratory experimental, post test only with control group design. Research conducted at the Laboratory of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. The subject of this research is Candida albicans cultured. The measured variable is the caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum [L.] Griff.) ethanol extract with concentration 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and diameter of inhibition zone. The data were taken after incubation at 37C for 48 hour. Data were analyzed with Pearson correlation test dan one way ANOVA test with Post-Hoc Tamhane test. Results: Pearson correlation test showed that there are positive correlation between the antifungal effect with increase concentration of caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum [L.] Griff) ethanol extract. There is significant differences between all concentrations with negative control. There is no significant differences between antifungal effects of concentration 35% with ketoconazole. Conclusion: Caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum [L.] Griff.) ethanol extract starting concentration at 15% has antifungal effect to the growth of Candida albicans. Caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum [L.] Griff) ethanol extract concentration of 35% is thought to have an equal effect with the antifungal ketoconazole. Abstract

Background: Nowadays the prevalence of malaria in Indonesia is still high. Anopheles aconitus is one of the vector of malaria. Insecticide is a way which government uses to kill the Anopheles aconitus mosquitoes, but it can cause the resistence of the mosquitoes, because of that we need an alternative way to kill them, and we can use larvacide to kill the Anopheles aconitus larvae. Spring Onion contains substances that can be larvacide, so the researcher wanted to prove that granules of Spring Onions extract had effects to kill the Anopheles aconitus larvae. Methods:This research used laboratory experimental design with post test only control group design. The subject of this research was Anopheles aconitus larvae that were divided into 7 groups, each group contained 25 larvae and the research was repeated in 4 times. For the negative control group we used 100 ml water. The other six groups contained a different number of granules of Spring Onions extract; they were 850 mg, 1000 mg, 1150 mg, 1300 mg, 1450 mg, and 1600 mg. The observation was held after 24 hours, then, the number of dead larvae was counted. The data were analyzed using Linear Regression and Probit test. Results:Linear Regression test showed that the R correlation score was 0.984 and R2 score was 0.969, this meant that the effect of the number of granules of the Spring Onions extract to kill larvaes was 96.9% and the rest 3.1% was effected by the others variables. Probit test showed LC50 (Lethal Concentration) was 820.573 mg and LC99 was 1671.886 mg. Conclusion:There is effect of granules of Spring Onions extract to the mortality of Anopheles aconitus larvae. The LC50 is 820.573 mg and the LC99 is 1671.886 mg, while the effect of the number of granules to influence is R2: 96.9% and the correlation between the number of granules and mortality is R: 0.984. Abstract

Background : Brewed green tea contains antifungal substance such as polyphenol which is considered can inhibit fungal growth. The aim of this research is to determine antifungal effect of brewed green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) against Candida albicans growth In Vitro. Methods : The research was performed as experimental laboratory. The subject of this research were clinical sample of Candida albicans and taken randomly. This research used 7 treatment groups, they were sterilized aquadest as negative control, brewed green tea with concentration of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%, also fluconazole 25 g as positive control. This research was repeated four times. The plate was incubated at the temperature of 37C for 48 hours then inhibition diameter zone formed was measured. The data was analyzed by Linier Regression test then continued by Correlation test on IBM Statistics for Windows version 20. Results : The diameter of inhibition zone increased along with increasing concentrations, because higher concentration of brewed green tea contained more substances, and the diameter of concentration of 100% group is almost the same with diameter of positive control group. The results of statistical analysis using Linier Regression test showed that there are significant differences on seven of treatment groups (p < 0,05) and the Correlation test showed that there are close relation between concentration of brewed green tea and the diameter of inhibition zone. Conclusion : Brewed green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) has antifungal effect against Candida albicans growth In Vitro. Start from concentration of 60% up to 100%, there were antifungal effect, and the antifungal effect of concentration of 100% is close to fluconazole 25 g/ml. Abstract

Background: Spring onion (Allium fistulosum L.) are known to contain saponin, tanin and flavonoid having larvicide effect. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of granules of spring onion extract (Allium fistulosum L.) on the Mortality of Aedes aegypti L. Larvae. Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental with the post test only controlled group design, which was done at Balai Besar Penelitian dan Pengembangan Vektor dan Reservoir Penyakit (B2P2VRP) Salatiga, Central Java. The subject used in this research was third stage of Aedes aegypti L. larvae. Subjects were taken with incidental sampling technique. The numbers of the subjects were 175 larvae, divided into 7 groups, so each group contained 25 larvae. This treatment was repeated 4 times. For the control group it was used 100 ml of water. The other six groups used granules solution of spring onion extract, that were 1,400 mg, 1,700 mg, 2,000 mg, 2,300 mg, 2,600 mg, and 2,900 mg per 100 ml of water. The observation was held after 24 hours then the number of dead larvae was counted. The data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA followed by LSD Post Hoc. Lethal Concentration (LC) value was determined using Probit analysis. Results: There were significant difference of larvicide effect caused by granules of spring onion extract treatment (p = 0.000). The number of dead larvae increased along with the increase in the concentration of granules. LSD test indicated that there was significant difference between two groups except between groups 2,600 mg/100 ml and 2,900 mg/100 ml. The results of probit analysis showed that LC50 was 1,620.55 mg/100 ml and LC99 was 3,333.89 mg/100 ml. Conclusion: The granules of spring onion (Allium fistulosum L.) extract can cause death of Aedes aegypti L. larvae with LC50 in level of 1,620.55 mg/100 ml and LC99 in level of 3,333.89 mg/100 ml. Abstract

Background: Candida albicans is a normal flora that can be turned into a pathogen on an immunocompromised person. Candida sp. infection, or commonly referred to candidiasis, can be treated with azole group such as fluconazole. Fluconazole has some side effects like gastrointestinal disorders, urticarial rash, and eosinophilia. The fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans has also been reported several times, so future research about antifungal substance is needed. Curcuma manggas essential oils contain some substances which has antifungal effect (caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, ?-pinene). The objective of this study is to know the antifungal effect of essential oil of Curcuma mangga rhizomes on Candida albicans growth in vitro. Methods: The study was quasi experimental laboratory with post test only group design study and have been performed in Parasitology Laboratory Faculty of Medicine, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. The subject of this study was Candida albicans taken from clinical sample with random sampling. Curcuma manggas essential oils which used in this study were diluted with ethanol 70% into various concentrations (1,5%, 2%, 2,5%, 3%, 3,5%). Subject was inoculated on Sabboraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media with 6 mm diametric well, filled with each type of essential oil concentration. Inhibition zone diameter as the data was analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney statistical test. Result: The antifungal effect of 2,5% until 3% concentration of Curcuma mangga rhizomes essential oils equals with the antifungal effect of ketoconazole 25g/mL and in 3,5% concentration of Curcuma mangga rhizomes essential oils exceed the antifungal effect of ketoconazole 25g/mL. Conclusions: Essential oils of Curcuma mangga rhizomes have antifungal effect on Candida albicans growth in vitro. Keywords: Curcuma mangga Val., essential oils, Candida albicans
