Abstract

This service activity is a training for school children to care about their food consumption and nutritional status.. This service activity carried out at SD Az-Zakiyah Islamic School Medan aims to provide understanding to school children about healthy, nutritious, and balanced food, as well as weight and height measurement skills. The methods used are lectures, practice of measuring body weight and height using microtoas and digital scales, and the practice of introducing food ingredients that contain nutrients using a food model. The t test results showed that there was a significant difference (p = 0.005) in children's knowledge before and after providing information. This shows that this training provides increased knowledge of school children. It is hoped that the training participants will later become nutritional ambassadors who can disseminate information about healthy, nutritious, and balanced food and the importance of monitoring nutritional status from an early age to their friends, especially at school and in the environment around their homes in an effort to improve nutritional status in school children. In addition, I hope this program will be sustainable and will raise awareness among school foundations and health centers to support this activity which has been initiated in college.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Simalungun Regency is one of the districts in North Sumatra with a high stunting rate where there are 28.5 percent of children who are stunted in 2021. A survey of 8 mothers with stunted children found that working in the fields led to little attention to their children's growth and development. Mothers often fed snacks without nutritional value, and children aged 2-5 were excluded from the study due to chronic malnutrition. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of knowledge, attitudes, and actions of mothers on the incidence of stunting in children aged 2-5 years in Simalungun Regency. This research is a cross-sectional study carried out in Simalungun Regency in July 2023. Sampling in this study was by multistage random sampling technique, where the number of samples in this study was 266 children. Results showed that children of low-educated fathers and mothers had a higher incidence of stunting, with 96.60% and 93.42% respectively. Additionally, children of working mothers had a higher incidence of stunting at 44.94%. The analysis of the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and actions with stunting incidents in children aged 2-5 years in Simalungun regency revealed a significant relationship, with a p value of 0.0001 (p<0.05). Poor maternal knowledge, attitude, and behavior were associated with an increased risk of anemia in their children. Specifically, mothers with poor knowledge had 7.149 times the risk, mothers with a poor attitude had 2.946 times the chance, and mothers with poor behavior had 3.382 times the risk of having a child with anemia compared to those with good knowledge, attitude, and behavior. The analysis showed a significant correlation between knowledge, attitudes, and actions with stunting incidents in children aged 2-5 years in Simalungun regency, with a p value of 0.0001 (p<0.05) Keywords: Knowledge, Attitudes, Actions, Stunting, Mothers  ABSTRAK Kabupaten Simalungun merupakan salah satu kabupaten di Sumatera Utara dengan angka Stunting tinggi dimana terdapat 28,5 persen anak yang mengalami stunting pada tahun 2021. Abstract

This research chose children aged 12-24 months as the sample because they are in a critical period of physical and cognitive growth, vulnerable to stunting due to inadequate nutritional intake. Other research shows that inadequate nutritional intake at 6-24 months of age can affect brain development and a child's future intelligence. It is important to monitor the nutritional intake and nutritional status of children aged 12-24 months to reduce the risk of stunting and its negative impact on cognitive development. Additionally, at this age, exclusive breastfeeding plays a crucial role in child growth, and this research can help understand the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding, nutritional intake, and stunting in children aged 12-24 months.

Abstract

Background: Nutritional status is an indicator of growth, and the first two years of a child's life should be closely observed because it is a critical period for development. Failure to grow during this period will affect nutritional status. Many factors affect a child's nutritional status, including sociodemographic factors and patterns of complementary feeding of breast milk. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the influence of sociodemographic factors and patterns of complementary feeding on the nutritional status of children under two years old in coastal areas of North Sumatra. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional approach involving 212 mother-child pairs aged 6-23 months in Pantai Labu District. Data collection involved structured questionnaires and interviews covering family characteristics, initial food introduction, breastfeeding status, and child age. Nutritional status was assessed through child length and weight measurements. Multiple logistic regression tests were conducted for multivariate analysis, and bivariate tests using chi-square. Results: The results showed that there was an influence of maternal knowledge (p-value=0.008; OR=2.678), maternal education (p-value=0.005; OR=2.807), and economic status (p-value=0.0001) on children's nutritional status. Most mothers (78.8%) provided timely complementary feeding and maintained hygienic practices (81.1%). Despite this, 15-20% of children exhibited poor nutritional status across weight-for-age, length-for-age, and weight-for-length indicators. Conclusions: Children's nutritional status in coastal areas is significantly influenced by sociodemographic factors. Integrated interventions targeting maternal capabilities and family economic conditions are crucial for improving child nutrition.
