Abstract

This research analyzes the application of the user-centered design (UCD) method in developing educational toys that focus on introducing culture, especially the Sundanese Julang Ngapak traditional house. The main goal of this research is to create products that are useful in entertainment and can also encourage children's cognitive, social, and emotional development. Qualitative methodology was applied through observation and interview techniques at SDN Cijagra 119 Bandung. The results showed that children were more enthusiastic about interactive and group games while tending to be more passive in formal learning activities. Aesthetic toy designs, characterized by the choice of relevant colors and shapes, have proven effective in attracting children's attention. Through an evaluation by media experts and child psychologists, the resulting product was declared safe, followed the curriculum, and was able to improve cognitive skills, such as cooperation and problem-solving. The best sketches integrate the Julang Ngapak structure with a puzzle system to support active learning. This research emphasizes the importance of the UCD approach in improving the quality and relevance of educational toys rooted in cultural values.

Abstract

This study responds to the growing environmental problem of plastic pollution in the Citarum River and to the limited funding available to local environmental organizations. It aims to identify the most suitable material from a blend of recycled plastics—LDPE and HDPE—to serve as the base material for fundraising bracelets for the Solusi Sungai Resik Foundation. The material selection is based on its availability at the foundation's waste management facility and the quality of the processed outcome for bracelet production. The research employs an adapted Material Development Design (MDD) method, which includes material exploration, sample creation, durability testing, and user interviews to assess material experience through aesthetic, tactile, emotional, and functional aspects. The adaptation of MDD in this study focuses on selecting and validating material experience, without fully implementing it in the final product, due to technical constraints. The results show that the LDPE-HDPE blend produces a visually appealing marble pattern resembling river streams, has a comfortable texture, and elicits positive emotional responses from informants. The material also demonstrates resistance to water, sunlight, and skincare products, and is safe for skin contact. These findings indicate that plastic waste from the Citarum River can be transformed into a functional and meaningful material for fundraising bracelets supporting Solusi Sungai Resik's environmental mission. Beyond material innovation, this approach contributes to social change by raising environmental awareness, encouraging public participation, and supporting the financial sustainability of local environmental initiatives.

Abstract

Increased hiking activities in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park have increased waste accumulation, posing environmental challenges despite ongoing cleanup efforts such as Operasi Bersih (Opsih). One key issue is the lack of recognition systems that validate hikers' contributions, especially those who voluntarily carry trash back from the mountain. This study proposes an appreciation medal made from upcycled plastic waste collected during hikes, designed to serve as both a symbolic reward and a catalyst for social change, promoting environmental responsibility, collective pride, and increased participation in volunteer cleanup programs. Using a Design Thinking approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires with hikers and Opsih volunteers. The 3D-printed prototype was positively received, with users valuing its symbolic significance and environmental message. These findings highlight the potential of symbolic upcycled objects to foster behavioral change and strengthen shared values around sustainability and volunteerism.

Abstract

Outdoor photography represents an evolving visual culture practice within Indonesia’s digital society, where mobility, self-expression, and environmental adaptability are increasingly crucial. However, existing photography gear often fails to address the contextual challenges faced by outdoor photographers, particularly in relation to unpredictable tropical weather and the demands of a mobile digital lifestyle. This study responds to this gap by designing a modular camera bag using a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach. Employing a qualitative case study method with participatory elements, the research integrates interviews, field observations, and questionnaires involving urban outdoor photographers. The design process follows the IDEO Human-Centered Design (HCD) framework, consisting of the stages of Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation, and is supported by a thematic analysis of field data to derive actionable design insights. The resulting design emphasizes spatial flexibility, weather-resistant materials, and a modular system that promotes sustainability and personalization. Beyond addressing functional requirements, the bag embodies visual identity and reflects how everyday object design can negotiate cultural expressions, environmental adaptation, and digital mobility within Indonesia’s socio-visual landscape.

Abstract

The increasing number of cancer patients in Indonesia encourages the need for adequate supporting facilities, especially for patients outside the region who undergo treatment in Bandung and need a temporary place during the healing process. Yayasan Rumah Cinta Insani in Bandung is one of the halfway houses that accommodates cancer patients, especially children to adolescents and their families. However, the inadequate layout, facilities, comfort, and accessibility make this environment unable to fully support the healing process. Applying the Healing Architecture concept to the interior of the halfway house is a key solution to create an environment that is healthier, safer, and supports the physical and mental well-being of patients. Key design elements include natural lighting, ventilation, color, comfort, and accessibility. This research uses a qualitative method with a Design Thinking approach, including five stages: empathize through observation and interviews with patients, caregivers, and managers; define the main problem to find a solution; ideate presents ideas; prototype as the result; and test to evaluate the proposed design. The goal is to produce a more humane, flexible, and efficient halfway house. The expected result is an environment that supports holistic healing, improves comfort for patients and families, and adapts to resident needs
